Exercise: A ramp ADC has a clock running at a frequency of 1MHz. The input voltage ranges from 0 to 40.95V for a 12-bit output. Determine: (i) The resolution of the ADC. (ii) The digital equivalent of 7.828V. (iii) The conversion time for VA = 7.828V . (iv) The maximum conversion time for this converter.
@EngineeringFunda
@EngineeringFunda 3 года назад
Total steps = 2^12 = 4096 Resolution = 40.95 ÷ (4096-1) = 0.01Volt Digital equivalent of 7.828V = 7.828÷0.01 = 782.8 ~ 783 Conversation time = Approximation for 783 we need 10 bits approximation. And see the video till last so you can better understand everything.

Question: Let the analogue value of an input signal is 5, for reference value 1 for ADC. Considering that the ADC is 4 bits, write down at least 6 iterations to show the ADC process using successive approximation method (showing update in the binary digits of 4 bit). Please solve
@EngineeringFunda
@EngineeringFunda Год назад
The successive approximation method is an algorithm used by analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) to convert analog signals to digital signals. The process involves comparing the input voltage to a reference voltage, and iteratively adjusting the digital output until it matches the input voltage as closely as possible. For the given input signal of 5 and reference value of 1, the ADC process using the successive approximation method for a 4-bit ADC can be shown as follows: Initial guess: 1000 (8 in decimal) Compare input voltage to the voltage represented by 1000 (8/16 * reference voltage) Input voltage > 8/16, so the first bit is updated to 1 Guess after first bit update: 1100 (12 in decimal) Compare input voltage to the voltage represented by 1100 (12/16 * reference voltage) Input voltage > 12/16, so the second bit is updated to 1 Guess after second bit update: 1110 (14 in decimal) Compare input voltage to the voltage represented by 1110 (14/16 * reference voltage) Input voltage > 14/16, so the third bit is updated to 1 Guess after third bit update: 1111 (15 in decimal) Compare input voltage to the voltage represented by 1111 (15/16 * reference voltage) Input voltage < 15/16, so the fourth bit remains 1 Guess after fourth bit update: 1110 (14 in decimal) Compare input voltage to the voltage represented by 1110 (14/16 * reference voltage) Input voltage < 14/16, so the fourth bit is updated to 0 Guess after fifth bit update: 1100 (12 in decimal) Compare input voltage to the voltage represented by 1100 (12/16 * reference voltage) Input voltage > 12/16, so the fifth bit is updated to 1 After six iterations, the final output of the ADC is 11001 (or 25 in decimal), which is the digital representation of the analog input signal of 5 with a reference value of 1 for a 4-bit ADC using successive approximation method.
