Suction cup holds onto to surfaces | Atmospheric Pressure | Physics

The principle behind suction cups is explained in this video. Suction is a phenomenon that happens because of atmospheric pressure. If a little air is removed or evacuated from a small enclosed space, that space experiences lower pressure. Because of the lower pressure in a small area, the atmospheric pressure outside pushes down on it and holds it firmly in place. Suction cups will hold on until either the cup is lifted from the side allowing air in and makes pressures equal or by applying a force large enough to overcome atmospheric pressure.

If the dish and mirror are on the table then how does the initial pulling work? There is no air on the other side of the mirror to push it against the vacuum in the sucker

Can it stay stuck indefinitely or at some point it releases itself without having to lift the edge?

What I wanna know is... Air pressure is 14PSI yeah? So on a sucker with a surface area of one inch, why isn't 14 pounds enough to pull it? Or if you had a larger sucker, why isn't 14 pounds or more enough to start to create a volume of space under vacuum? I mean conceptually it makes sense that you can't pull something apart without introducing something in between, but how do you explain this scientifically? What's the force holding them together if is greater than simply the atmospheric force? A vacuum doesn't have any mass, so why can't it be created in a volume under a sucker? It's not like it's creating air out of nothing, it's just the sucker material moving away from the surface material with nothing in between...
