Assuming you have all the little possible numbers correct, f one # in matching pair doesn't work then the other will. The purist would say that this is quessing,. You decide on this, however this is one way of solving. It can be solved by using other techniques.
PLEASE NOTE. THIS PUZZLE CAN BE SOLVED WITHOUT USING THIS TECHNIQUE BY USING SEVERAL OTHER TECHNQIES. The more techniques you know the more pathways you can take in order to solve. See tutorials.

You have made a guess of 1 or 5 in two adjacent cells which is something I don't like. I tend to leave guessing as a final technique after I have failed to solve the problem by logic. In this particular one, resorting to guessing is a bit too early. I refer to the grid in the same way as a chess board with columns A to I and rows 1 to 9 (slightly more than a chess board). I also refer to blocks of 9 squares by the square in the top left corner of the block. The first thing that strikes me is that squares H8 and I8 are either a 2 or a 7 as you have. I also note that C8 and D8 must therefore have a 1 or a 5 as you have got but I can't readily see that, by themselves, this takes us anywhere without guessing. I can then see that squares G1 and G2 must have a 1 or a 9 as you have got, so in block G3, this leaves squares G3, H3, H1 and I2 and numbers 2,5,6 and 7. Now I can see that the number 2 has to be in row 3 and 5 can't be in row 1 not column I, so squares G3 and H3 have to be 2 or 5. This the leaves squares H1 and I2 as 6 or 7, so neither block G3 nor G9 have any solution with a 7 in column G. This means that block G6 must have a 7 in column G and there is only one place for it to go which is in G4. With a 7 in G4 then a 7 must also be placed in F6.

Having done that, the rest of the puzzle drops out quite nicely without any guessing.

Well done. The logic goes like this" if all small bumbers are correct if one number doesn't work then the other number will. Remember this qs aimed at teaching a technique. Thanks however for your imput.

Hi mr. Thanks for the great lessons, you are great at teaching this.... Yet am amased at this guessing... Sudoku is logic, never should use guesses or trials. You missed x-wing of 6.in block 1 & 2, removing the 6 from 167 in block 8, cell 6. Als the clue is in block 9 and magic pairs 67 (missed the 2) and 25, moving up to block 6 with the 25-pair, leaving the 7 in cell 7 to reveil all.

Yes your are right I missed some tricks but that can happen to all of us, however I was using this video to show a technique. The logic goes like this. "If not this then it must be that."

Mr. Anonymous It seems you do not understand how hard sudoku works, especially machine generated puzzles. Very often, the only way to actually solve the puzzle is via bifurcation. Trial and error is completely necessary for the same reason that proof by contradictions are necessary in mathematics.

My program needed no backtracking for this, so you missed something. For example you have a 1,6 matching pair in the center block, so can erase any other 1s from that block, making a 7 @ f6 (#32), which solves everything in that block except the matching pair. Anther pair is in 9th column, 6,7., that erases the 7 from the matching pair in the 3rd block, solving that block. And so on. Now I found the 6,7 matching pair in the last block (you have a two in the candidate set for h1 (#80), which is already present in the last row) , erasing the 7 from g3 (#61), leaving g4 (#52) the only place where a seven can be. which is how my program solved this Sudoku, after putting the 5 @ e1 (#77), it doesn't need the last 2 hints.

You are exactly right. There are many ways to cook and egg. I went this route to show another way of solving. Yes this can be solved without using this method. Try not using a computer and see how you go.

@@SudokuGuy I am from India. I am a big fan of yours. I have watched many of your videos. That's what I wanted to say here. When you said in the beginning of this video that this Sudoku first is now stuck. There is no easy solution in sight. So I thought that digit 5 is present as a naked single in a cell R5C4 of block 5, then why should we use such a difficult method.

can we use this technique if my all cells aren't filled with little numbers that are matching pairs or underlined pair. I mean to say if there are only three cells which are matching pair will this work with them. Please tell fast

Can't 'the world's hardest sudoku' be solved without a computer program? I've tried applying several techniques and I can't even get a single number, the most advanced techniques are only useful in very specific situations, so I'm assuming if it can be solved by a human, it would require a really in-depth logic chain or a naked triple/quadruple. I've spent 3 hours or so trying to find a naked quadruple or triple though with no luck.
@jons2cool1

The difference between 'very hard' sudokus and the 'world's hardest' is so monumental it's disheartening. I just want to say that I solved the world's hardest sudoku, the right way, with logic.

Number 2 shouldn't be possible in cell 8 in box 9, therefor 2 and 5 should form a pair in cell 1 and 2 in box 9, which results cell 3 in box 7 to be 7 because of the 7 in box 4. The rests are easy to solve, no guess work needed at all for this puzzle.

I was under the impression that "brute force" or guessing should never be needed for a true sudoku. Am I misunderstanding this or are you basically saying to use brute force?
@SudokuGuy
@SudokuGuy 9 лет назад
pineapplewafers good point. The purist would say using "When all else fails" is a form of guessing based on "if one choice doens't work then the other will" providing you have all the small and big numbers correct. The purist would claim rightly that all puzzles (if genuine) should be able to be solved by logic..
@pineapplewafers

Thank you for the clarification.

pineapplewafers The site I use (krazydad.com) has an "Insane" level that warns "They cannot be solved without making guesses". I would never actually try to solve these on my own, but they are 100% true sudokus, with 1 unique solution. That doesn't necessarily mean there are no logical techniques to be used, but that it is highly unlikely that a human could successfully use these techniques without computer aid. However, I have tried the level below Insane, "Super Tough", and I tend to use testing rather than straight "guessing and hoping for the best". What I mean is, you'll probably reach a point where you'll need to "let cell a equal 1", and see what that does to cells b, c, and d. Your hope in this test is to find either a contradiction (e.g. a row with two 1's), or an extra clue that lets you proceed logically. Now, this technique is not required on this video's puzzle, but as an example: On the top row of this puzzle, let the cell with "16" as candidates be a 6. Therefore, the 56 becomes a 5, and the 15 becomes a 1. That would force the 1 in the bottom-centre box to be in the same column as the cell that we let be a 6. And there's our extra clue: "If the 16 cell is a 1, the 17 cell below it must be a 7. However, if it is NOT a 1 (i.e. if it is a 6), then the 1 in that column must be in the 167 cell below it, therefore the 17 cell still cannot be a 1. The 17 cell must therefore be a 7." Here's the distinction though: in my example, you're not actually guessing that cell is a 6 - you're simply spotting a deduction based on "what would happen if it were a 6?" and showing that regardless of that cell's value, the 17 cell must be a 7.

ben dunn Logic doesn't care about whether you accept it or not. This is all about the fact that there do exist genuine, proper sudoku puzzles, a.k.a sudoku puzzles, which require extremely long and difficult-to-spot chains in order to be solved. Wing techniques will not help for those types of puzzles. As such, IF-THEN logic, a.k.a what you call trial-and-error, is completely necessary to solve those puzzles. You will never encounter a handcrafted puzzle with such an insane, tedious level of difficulty, but many machine-generated puzzles are impossible to find a solution to without this type of "guessing."
