Sudsy Monchik @SudsyM
Husband I Father I Family I🏆 World Champion 🌎 | 5 X Ranked #1 in the World 1️⃣ | Pan American Gold Medalist 🥇 | Every man dies, not every man really lives🗡️
Recently, at the World Singles & Doubles Racquetball Championships in Colorado, I sat down with racquetball pro Sudsy Monchik to talk about his 7 years in Ecuador, his Ecuadorian wife Vero Sotomayor and their two young kids, his relationship with fellow New Yorkers and racquetball champions Jason Mannino and Ruben Gonzales, the reasons racquetball's popularity is declining and how to revive it.
Sudsy Monchik was born in Staten Island, New York and began playing racquetball at age 7. By age 19, he was playing on the pro tour. He's one of four kids. His parents and Jason Mannino's parents owned racquetball clubs, which helped the two boys to develop their games and become lifelong friends.
In 2015 the Ecuadorian racquetball association invited Sudsy to teach in their country. Already somewhat fluent in Spanish and ready for adventure, Sudsy moved to Cuenca, Ecuador where he lived for seven years. He met and married one of Ecuador's top players Vero Sotomayor and their two kids Juliana, 5, and Mateo, 3, were born in Ecuador before the family moved to the U.S. in 2022.
As a player, Sudsy has accumulated a long list of accolades: 11-time Junior World Champion, 11 USA Jr. National Championships, played 7 seasons on tour, finished 5-Time #1 Player in the World, 4-time US Open Champion, Pan American Gold Medalist, USA Hall of Fame Member, over 50 professional singles titles, 7 professional doubles titles, 3-time USA National Doubles Champion, Staten Island Sports Hall of Fame, and USA High School National Champion.
As a coach, Sudsy is also well renowned: Ecuador National Team Coach (2015-2017); Coached National Team to their best results in team history; Pan American Games, Toronto, Canada July 2015; Junior World Championships, Dominican Republic 2015; Pan American Championships, San Luis Potosi, Mexico 2016; World Championships, Cali, Colombia 2016; Junior World Championships, San Luis Potosí, Mexico 2006; Pan American Championships, San José, Costa Rica 2017 and currently coaching various players of all levels.

I’ve been playing racquetball weekly in a US company league for over 30 years. I have seen the definite decline in popularity, but our league is still active and it’s the best whole-body workout a person can get while having great fun. I wish you success in promoting the sport. I now also play pickleball, but racquetball is where my heart is.

It a shame when the best players in the world are competing with only a handful of fans watching. I’ve been playing racquetball since 1971. Love the game.

I tend to agree with Blum. The balls are faster and the rackets are better. Also, it's far harder to get enough spectators to sit around the courts. It's not like basketball or football where you got large amounts of people watching the game. Also to play at a competent level takes a lot of work. You need a certain amount of physical conditioning. You have a wide assortment of shots to learn. Then there's the strategies. It's a fast moving sport. Slowing the game down might help but I really doubt it. It's a very intense game that I'm not so sure that today's generations want.

Love your passion. We need more ambassadors like you. I learned to play in college and competed in the Collegiate Nationals back in the mid 80s after my collegiate wrestling career was over. Your idea of developing the game at the university level is a good one.

You and Cliff are my favorite players. The decline? You can’t see the ball on camera unless you’re a player. I’ve played since 1991 and it has influenced my approach to certain things my entire adult life.

With good cameras yes you can. Plenty of 4K vids from recent pro tournaments done very well that you can follow well.

Thanks for all you do to promote the sport! I think it also begins at the high school level. Many of the collegiate players were also very good high school players and wanted to continue playing.

I about spit my drink out when he said racquetball is a top five sport in the country. I thought he was taking about America for a second.

Lucky you didn't spit your drink. Sad to think that around 1980 racquetball was the fastest growing sport in America. I started playing in 1974 when few people had heard of it, so it was exciting to start seeing racquetball in TV commercials, celebrities playing, packed stands at the pro stops.

Sadly many players of the past didn't teach their children to play

Malia, you did an excellent job of inspiring your daughter Kelani Lawrence, a top-ranked pro today.

this is my opinion: it's more fun to play racquetball than to watch it. I've been playing for 10+ years, 2-3x/week.

I agree that racquetball is more of a participant rather than spectator sport, something like bowling.

@@classicracquetballv1501 also, on youtube, have you seen the korean/japanese racquetball videos? they have noticeably better quality in many different ways.

like racquetball, belong to Health club used to have 8 racquetball courts and now down to 2. sadly it's very difficult finding racquetball partners. when I do see racquetball players on the court, they are there because they are bored and players have their players they play with and therefore unfortunately, REFUSED, TO PLAY other players .

I'm really sorry to hear that. I love racquetball so much. It's a great game, but some reason it's really dying out. Courts are being demolished, and the ones that are left are often empty. I like pickleball okay, but it's just not the same workout.
