Rex discusses the energy industry with two of Canada's most successful energy producers (Perpetual Energy and Tourmaline Oil), covering topics such as the success of Canadian energy technologies, the growing difficulties of doing business under the current climate-change hysteria, and the intentionally repressive, Liberal-government policies and rhetoric that aim to take down Canada's largest industry.

I was beginning to wonder if reasonable and sane people still existed in CA. This interview series has renewed my faith somewhat so thank you.

Canada does not care about Alberta and will deliberately kill the goose that laid the golden egg. But Alberta will not give up without a fight. As Rose says, it’s going to get ugly, no question.

Thank you, Rex, for another great interview with two very knowledgeable and interesting guests. I got a bit of a shock when I saw Mike Rose - he wouldn't remember me, but we met in 1979-1980 when he was starting with Shell as a geologist, and I was working in the radio/telecom business in th oil patch. Alberta is a small town. I think both of your guests spoke very diplomatically, and tried to be as balanced as possible when talking about the sentiments and level of anger in Alberta. Like Mr. Rose, I lived through Pierre Trudeau's N.E.P. (and lost pretty much everything except my socks), and had to pick up the pieces and begin all over again. So many people I knew at that time had their lives destroyed during that time - quite a number took their own lives - and that period left those of us who came through it with a lingering bitterness, and a deep suspicion about the motives of governments compared to their statements and actions. I wound up some years later doing a bit of research in the area of transportation fuels and emissions which hung around for 10-12 years before attracting the interest of a major auto maker. They were able to take the research results and turn them into production engineering, and when they'd finished exhaust emissions for all their engines wre 35% lower. So basic research _does_ pay off, although often not immediately, and often not in the way a researcher envisages things while doing the experimental studies. I was forced to retire early because of health issues probably due in part, at least, to some parts of that research - or perhaps not. There's no way to tell with certainty. But it has left me with almost a decade of time where I've still had many contacts across the province - in the oil and gas and drilling industries, in Agriculture, in "hard science" academia like engineering, and people in the business. I've never seen the amount, or depth of rage that I see today in Alberta. I talk to quite a few people, and I'm hearing the same things over and over: Regardless of how much they love Canada and have deep roots (as I do myself), they feel that Alberta _has_ _not_ _choice_ but to leave Confederation, and quickly. "Wexit" is being touted as a "bargaining tool" started by a few hotheads. But the study of the _Mechanics_ that Separation would require have been studied very seriously by some very smart people for a good number of years. For most of us, Alberta leaving Confederation is something we would prefer not to do. But it is now the ONLY hope that Alberta may survive long enough to save what's left of the people, skills and assets. Canada wants Alberta's money but has declared war on western Canada. I do not use the term lightly. So Separation is the only avenue that many intelligent, respected, and successful people feel has a chance of saving what's left. To stay in Canada is to die.

My husband and son both work in the oil and natural gas industry, or as we call it in Oklahoma, the oil field. My husband drives a water tanker and my 19 year old son is a roustabout. He went to work straight out of high school. My dad worked on his fair share of drilling rigs and my brother in law is a pipe line welder. The industry has fed my entire family for many decades.

A great interview but we tip toe around the real issue. Trudeau and Butts have declared a full frontal attack on Alberta using Canadian tax payer dollars. Their attack is not about a he environment. C48 bans oil tankers that load oil from Canada. It doesn’t affect any of the tankers moving oil from Alaska south. It doesn’t affect any other of the noisy ship traffic including cruise ships. There’s been no attempt ... not one that Im aware, of to reduce coal shipments out of Vancouver harbour which I understand is the largest exporting coal port in North America. There’s no attempt ... not one to my knowledge to curtail tanker imports of “dirty” oil from foreign jurisdictions into eastern Canada. In 2010 Trudeau told LaPresse in a now famous interview that the “socio-democratic power” (whatever that means) needs to be taken back from Alberta. In that same interview he said that Canada belongs to Quebec. His attack on fossil fuels is directed ONLY on western Canadian people who work to produce this wonderful cheap energy from within Canada. He has succeeded. Absolutely shameful. Alberta and Saskatchewan are ANGRY. Well over 100,000 jobs lost. Homes lost. Retirements gone. Suicides up dramatically.

As a northern British Columbian, I am furious at the eastern provinces who just voted to destroy Alberta's economy. They don't want Albertan oil, but they are more than happy to keep on extorting $20 Billion dollars a year from Albertan citizens to feed their socialism. To put that number into perspective, $20 Billion dollars Canadian is about the equivalent of a U.S. nuclear powered aircraft carrier with a full compliment of aircraft, every single year.

Ironically, but fittingly, the only real Canadians left in lower mainland are the settled Chinese families in Richmond and the ostensibly diverse population of level headed folks in White Rock/South Surrey, which also has a significant Chinese population.

I am from Quebec and am abashed at what is going on. My eldest boy works in Grand Prairie and thankfully has a job with Precision drilling. I love that Rex is talking about this and maybe our idiot leaders and co-citizens will wake from the brainwashing that is destroying the patch and so many livelihoods. Please remember that there are some Quebecers who are with you and are just as pissed...

The incompetence level in our current Government is frightening, how do they represent all Canadians when they attack this industry and are destroying the West and then pander to Quebec?? The Carbon Tax is an absolute ridiculous idea for this Country! We need good Leadership from somewhere!

Thanks for this interview, Rex. I am just starting to learn about fossil fuel production. I've a question about term "cleanest molecule" that is used a few times in this episode. Is it referring to the actual oil or gas products produced by our oil industries, or is it really just about one of the molecules within the products? I would like to ensure I understand and use this term properly. Thank you. Viv.
@rextv9221
@rextv9221 5 лет назад
Thank you for the question. It refers to both oil and gas carbon molecules.
@Paulcal44
@Paulcal44 5 лет назад
It means we have the lowest emissions to produce each of those molecules, as well as the tightest regulations and highest environmental standards on the planet, and we continue to improve our performance. Even if a person believes that the world needs to somehow stop using the hundred million barrels per day of oil, Canadian barrels should be the last barrels since they are the most responsible

Firstly, good on them for making progress, I like that. Secondly, I'm not from Canada but Germany and do not understand what this is is about or the references. It seems to me that all three are defending an economic standpoint against an environmental one. Those are different fundaments in my opinion. What is more important for you is what drives your choice I think, so I don't know why it is debated. But I find interesting what was said in 19:00 : How do they reduce CO2 because I am fairly certain that by burning fuel you must generate CO2. I would like to see the formula for their improved process. Furthermore, what and where are the other things to be cleaned up. CO I guess is one but where does it occur other than by burning fuel? And what do they refer to when they say "the cleanest molecule", what molecule exactly.
@svhuwagv2965
@svhuwagv2965 5 лет назад
I just read an answer on the last comment: "the molecule" is the "oil and gas carbon molecule". This leaves me with a question regarding this: What is the improvement in terms of cleanliness? Is someone able to provide a link to a research paper or something that explains this? A paper would also be nice for the other question above if possible.

That would be a normal response 10 years ago but the media and compromised government members have made the environment a political issue to pander to the young uninformed and misinformed in an effort to gain or hold political power and protect the interests of their political power brokers.
@EasyBreakOven

"Cleanest molecule" is the most unscientific bullshit I have ever heard. If you have a molecule of CO2, it's the same everywhere in the planet. They do deserve respect for reducing the emissions at the production phase, but consumption of the oil represents at least 70% of the emissions, and they dodge this entirely by focusing on the economic benefits as the comments above noted. Then Rex swings into a ridiculous binary argument that without oil we wouldn't have lights, and claims the industrial revolution smog all got cleaned up through technology because of the energy produced. Tell me Rex, which industry made the move to clean up London on its own initiative?
@antiprogpragmatist859
@antiprogpragmatist859 4 года назад
EasyBreakOven ...it is not the “most unscientific bullshit” you have ever heard. Producers can only be responsible for their emissions. They do not force anyone to burn fossil fuels...they only provide a product for which there is a demand. But maybe you find it preferable for the world to get their fossil fuels from great environmental stewards such as Nigeria, Venezuela, Russia, SA, ...etc...etc...etc Btw...thank you for using petroleum everyday of your hypocritical life

I'd be curious to see Rex revisit the topic of separatism (Wexit) now that Trudeau has been reelected Western Canada once again has no representation in the party that's in control of the country. It's increasingly harder and harder for Albertans to justify the one-way deal they've been trapped in for decades, and it does ultimately boil down to "Taxation without representation."

The auto industry has been unionized for decades and politicians recognize the voting power of unions. Conversely, oil and gas has treated its employees very well monetarily which has kept them from feeling the need to unite with one voice to influence government. I haven’t followed politics with interest over my long life so I may be missing something, but it has been a reality over those many years that people from all across Canada who needed jobs headed to the oil fields. We all benefited and should now unite behind the oil and gas industry for the sake of Canada. And one more thing, there is an element of jealousy toward the provinces that have oil and gas that developed over the last half century. Albertans especially have been viewed as the “haves” while other provinces were the “have nots” and the have nots seem to enjoy the current paralysis being imposed on the haves. And one more thing, assuming that building pipelines will bolster the steel industry in Canada isn’ a given since they are also under attack with the current government awarding the building of the LNG project in BC to the Chinese; they are effectively cutting the throat of the Canadian steel industry.

I had a very bad experience investing in Tourmaline Oil. Their stock is overvalued, very much manipulated and has significantly less liquidity than many other Canadian oil/gas stocks.
