Suebi Armor? - Multiplayer Battle - Total War Rome 2 

The reason germanic slingers have more armor is because they did alot of chest workouts so the projectiles bounce off their pecs

It's funny how you're puzzled by the germanic slingers doing so well, given that in the past you would always laud them for their high missile block chance lol

Germanic Slingers have "germanic_small_skirm" shield type which conveys a 60% missile block chance. Add in the fact that they're only 280 and they'll trade very well vs any missile unit in the game. That shield is whats giving them the increased armour stat. Makes them pretty awesome at trading fire with other skirmishers! Though im sure you knew that, just didn't quite remember in the moment. Fun battle as always!

That was a rough one for Line Berserker, our game are normally down to the wire. Like I read in the comments that 60 block chance is just overpowered for the Germanic slingers. The Germanic rider were indeed not on fire at will vs the horse archers just wanted to drain a bit of their ammo

Just to let you know Heir, as Rome 2 is the TW game I have most experience modding, the way the shield looks is just part of the variant mesh and does not affect stats. In the data there are shield keys and each is tied to an armor, melee defense, and missile block chance value that they add to the unit (regardless of what they look like in game). Most decent infantry shields give about 40 to 50 block chance. This does not show anywhere in game and does not seem to be connected to other stats. The pelta shield used by eastern slingers and others has 5 armor 25 melee defense but still blocks 50% of missiles. The Germans seem to be special in that all of their shields besides one, block 40% or more missiles, and 4 of their shields block more than 50%. There is only one other shield that does this (tower of eastern factions), so they have 4 of the 5 >50% shields. The Germanic wood (bunch of their units) and Germanic hex (wodanaz spears) block 55%. While the Germanic small skirmisher (slingers) and Germanic wall (spear wall) block 60%. So as far as I can tell in Rome 2 if you are being shot where the shield doesn't protect, you lose the block chance but the unit you still receive the armor the shield gives you. So, both units have cloth armor, while eastern slingers win across the board in actually slinging, they have 15 armor (10 + 5) and 50% block chance, the Germanic slingers have 30 armor (10 + 20) and 60% block chance. The Germanic slingers are just substantially more resistant to incoming fire and that is what matters in a skirmisher fight, though I do believe flank shots and effective focus fire could turn the fight. While it says 7 for both their rate of fire, that stat bar is really inaccurate (the whole bar is like 15 so a large portion of it just says 7) and I believe eastern slingers do have a faster fire rate (in tables it is reload stat). Still while not at MLG freemen levels of utility, Germanic slingers give you so much for the price even if it doesn't show in their stats, such good units! EDIT: Bonus, there are hidden bonus vs missiles and weak vs missiles stats on armor which is not shown anywhere in game. all but 3 armors in the game don't use these stats, but padded armor has a bonus vs missiles of 1 and spolas and cataphract elite have a weak vs missiles of 1. I am not sure why CA did this. With 110 armor Royal cataphracts are still more resistant to most missle fire than normal cataphracts (90 armor) but when things like javelins (even weak javelins have decent ap and bonus vs cav) hit them, they take way more damage than say like an eastern cataphract would. Also, the spolas thing is why Royal Peltast seem way more venerable to missiles than any other elite infantry in the game despite their stats. It is because they are, and I really don't get. Royal Cataphracts you could argue is a balance thing to make them have some weakness at range with their 110 armor (I don't like it but fine) but the spolas one just makes a bunch of Greek and Hellenistic units way weaker to missiles fire. Besides the Royal peltast most of the units that have the spolas are middling to cheap in price and most have good block chance, so you tend not to notice it (people don't shoot these units), but people are going to focus fire on elite infantry, like Royal Peltast, especially if you put your general in the unit so still strange to me.

Really tough to fight tribal factions with cavalry-based armies. Everything has a javelin. As for the slingers, I believe having longer columns means some of the projectiles are more likely to follow the same path and have multiple hits on a single target per volley. Eastern slingers seemed to be spread wider, 2 deep compared to the 3 deep of the Suebi.

Germanic slingers got +15 armor and +5 morale over Eastern slingers.

The battles you show on here are incredible. The movement of troops is smooth and deliberate and well coordinated. My battles are an absolute cluster fuck, more like a massive pub brawl than a well executed battle lol. There are so many moving pieces in this game that its very easy to get overwhelmed. I need to be more patient, i think, and not rush all my men into battle.

Shields provide an armor value, which is where most or all of the slinger's armor is coming from.

Sadly a lot of stats are hidden away in the files. FYI, Suebi units are all amongst the fastest of their armor classes. All melee infantry are light - fast, except the Sword Masters who are medium - fast. All ranged infantry and very light - fast. And the cav, from scouts, hunts to noble are very light, light, and heavy. The fast designation is a bonus to speed of 0.2 units, about 10%-17% depending on the base speed of the unit, so more beneficial to slower units. Typically only special infantry from certain factions get the fast bonus, whereas ALL Suebi infantry get it. So as you can tell, it's a pretty defining characteristic of the faction. Delving into the stats only further accentuates this speciality, with typically lower armor and offensive stats across the board for each type of unit, but higher defense, missile block chance, charge, bonus damage to large or infantry, sometimes health, and of course speed. And that all basically translates to having to make the most of the superior mobility to change the pace of the battle to avoid the toe-to-toe or receiving of flanking attacks where Suebi's inferior stats will put them at a substantial disadvantage.

Could you please do more videos on Total War: Attila? Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy your Rome II videos, but I also would love to watch more battles like these between factions and units in Attila as well, since I’m a fan of the Fall of Rome.

Getmanic slingers got germanic skirmish shield which blocks 65% of projectiles. All cavalry in the game, including german cavalry got low % chance vs projectiles. After ancestral update, germanic units got buffed in their shields to negate their weight attribute. Since light units lose in charge and grinding fights vs heavier counterparts.

If I was the Armenian player, I would have been crying about the 9 minute mark. Not disrespecting the player here, just saying I totally lack the skill for the online battles, and would be left to watch my troops get picked apart for basically the entire game.

Suebi with thier low (non-shield) armour value are very vulnarable to cycle charging but cataphracts are too expensive to have casualities to their javelins and are too slow to pull out after hitting enemy formations,especially spearmens with counter-cavalry tactic. Persian cavalry available to Armenia would be better in this task maybe backed by one units of cataphracts.

Again, i guess they get the Armor from the shield? That or they just have ROCK HARD ABS! Rome 2 definitely be weird when it comes to armor sometimes, I would even say Histati have too much armor for what they are, like you look at them and it is a BREAST/BACK PLATE, their shield and i guess their Thick cloth clothes.

At this point your going to make me redownload Rome 2.

Cav based armies really struggle in the warscape engine. Vanilla Rome 2 is all about the infantry factions. I miss the old medieval 2 cav charges.

This year's too late now so they're probably not going to do it unless it's modded but I would actually like it where a lot of the barbarian factions have little to no armor except for maybe melee defense and evasion so they avoid getting hit but their armor is terrible however they have more men to a unit to compensate in that way you can feel like a true barbarian horde up against the more armored civilized quote unquote factions
