Suffolk Hang Gliding is a super friendly winching club that operate from a grass strip located between Norwich and Ipswich.
The video footage was mostly filmed around the airstrip although there are a couple of clips from further afield too. You may recognise Newmarket Racecourse and Sywell aerodrome which were taken during a 150km flight from the winch.
The video has been made to commemorate the passing of the shortest day of the year and the winter solstice. Finally its time to look forward to the longer days of the spring and the coming of the next thermal harvest in 2018.

Yep, they take you all the way to cloudbase. Find the column of rising warm air and circle in it. Hours of fun!

It is very rewarding, great practise for those low saves. Whenever you get to 1000ft and feel a bit of lift you just pretend you've just got off the winch!

So cool.... why has hang gliding just kind of declined in the public eye? Seems to still be such a cool sport. I can't decide if I want to learn this or paragliding... but these fixed wing gliders just have some kind of special appeal!

It's not a sport for everyone and there's no way to get an audience close to it, like hockey. :) Therefore, it may seem that it is "reduced" in the eyes of the public, but it was somehow still. Parachute or rogalo is a dilemma. Usually pragmatism wins - the parachute wing is foldable, you put it in the trunk of your car or in your backpack. You can quickly disassemble it and fly if the wind allows. It is slower in flight, which is appreciated by recreational pilots ... The benefits of hang gliding begin where the benefits of paragliding end. You need to seriously consider what is better for you.

What do you guys do when you are too old to fly hang gliders? Have have you considered flying sailplanes?

Yes, i have a few hours in a sail plane already but just easier to throw a hang glider on the roof of the car and go flying somewhere at the moment. Love seeing sail planes in the sky though, especially when they are marking thermals! Will probably join Tibenham (the excellent local club) in the next few years.

Tibenham is a good club. My club at Ridgewell is actively recruiting members we are having a taster day on the 29th of September with a simulator and glider flying to show what it is like to fly sailplanes. If anyone is interested then they would be welcome to try gliding.

Haha, we have so many hangglider pilots returning from sailplane flying, because they considered themselves being too old. Literally You can still hangglide being an octogenarian.

What languages do you speak? There are many places to learn: Spain, France, Italy, Netherlands... I know a very good English instructor who lives in spain: www.lejair.co.uk/ or there is this school in France: www.supercanard.fr/ or in the Netherlands: www.deltavliegschool.com/hang-gliding-fly-like-a-bird/ there are many places.

I think the closest place is Indonesia, Taiwan or China. I have a video of flying in Taiwan on my channel. I have also flown in China :) I visited Palawan once too! No hang gliding though.
