It wasn't full voting rights either. It was only married women over 30. Women didn't get the same voting rights as men until 1928

@rick It was also wrong that ordinary men couldn't vote either. But any man had the vote before women and some men had the vote from 1832. And what do you mean about woman's track record not justifying their inclusion in the vote?

In 1866, Parliament debated a bill that would give the vote to "respectable working men", but exclude the "feckless and criminal poor". This sparked fierce debate, led to the fall of one government and the rise of another, sparked mass public demonstrations, and inspired criticism that the proposals either went too far or not far enough. Eventually, the result was the Second Reform Act of 1867. This gave the vote to all men who personally paid rates (property tax) in Britain's towns and cities. In effect, it enfranchised the head of household in every family, including working class households. Originally the Act had been intended to only enfranchise home-owners, but a parallel law passed soon after made tenants liable to pay the rates on the property they rented: so in effect, this measure enfranchised them too since they became rate-payers. The 1867 Reform Act doubled the number of voters in England and Wales from one in seven men to almost 30% of them. The Third Reform Act of 1884 extended the same wider franchise to the countryside as the 1867 Act had introduced in the boroughs. Since mediaeval times, England had different franchises in different parts of the country: this law abolished that in favour of a single uniform franchise. The 1884 Act again doubled the size of the electorate from 30% to over 60% of all adult men. It enfranchised the rural working class. The 1918 Representation of the People Act, passed during the First World War, abolished the property qualification entirely and finally brought in universal suffrage for adult men. The men who received the vote by this law were the non-householders - crucially, this included soldiers who lived in barracks, since it was felt to be wholly unjust that they should be denied a vote when they were currently fighting for their country. The 1918 Act also gave the vote to women, though on a more limited basis than men. This discrimination was abolished ten years later in 1928 when women received full universal suffrage.

Slightly inaccuracy regarding the Suffragettes not highlighted there. At the time, woman who wanted the vote were either Suffragists (Peaceful protesters) and the term 'Suffragettes' was coined specifically -for the other group- only to look down on those who had decided that it was a time for action and wanted the vote through violent protests. (Also- just being a nerd for detail- not being political)

@@blueozzie4263 Afraid not. Equality is a term codified into western thought centuries ago, traditionally defined in the context of negative rights. You have the equal freedom, granted by god or your natural place in the world without society, to do as you please without government intervention. We now have a new constructed idea that negative rights are superior and have extended that notion to all things. So you no longer have the free right to choose for yourself, even is that means success or failure, now governments think it right to make sure the outcome is identical for everyone. As I'm sure you can appreciate, this has many problems: limitations upon free speech, and the freedoms of individuals. These are at a very fundamental level two kinds of 'equality'.

Genuine system used by a number of companies. If something hasn't sold well, they are released in pink to sell. Really sad part, it almost always works. You shouldn't be cheering Saudi Arabia for doing something that most of the world had achieved a hundred years ago, the appropriate response is "about fucking time!" They still don't let women drive, own property, have a job, or be outside without a man accompanying them. We shouldn't be congratulating them on reaching a stage we as a nation reached ages ago, we should be telling them to get a move on.

Because they're not doing the same job. For example, Carrie Gracie, the BBC editor in China who famously quit, failed to mention that when she first took the post, she was on a higher salary than both the Middle East and North America editors at the time. It was only when Jon Sopel (having already accumulated a higher salary as a correspondent, editor and presenter) stepped in as North America editor that it seemingly became an issue, because in spite of the fact that he was sometimes working double the air-time in peak times on a 24-hour rolling schedule rather than the more sedentary features-based agenda Gracie was on at the China office, she apparently expected him to accept a pay cut for taking on a promotion and _more_ work? What Earthly sense does that make?
