It is just amazing how quiet and respectful audiences during Sufjan shows are, like they are all just entranced by the music. Then again, it probably would be very inappropriate to be loudly yelling and cheering during these songs.

Carrie and Lowell is my most played album till date. Used to be a diehard metalhead. Sufjan made me an explorer. In my case he made me embrace beauty in simple things I listen to. Should have know better is even better here...
@witchassbitch3
@witchassbitch3 7 лет назад
Should've known better was the first Sufjan song I heard, and that pushed me down the rabbit hole that is indie folk music that is incredibly sad yet so pretty you don't realize how sad it is until you look at the lyrics. It's beautifully bittersweet.
@samitpaudel7886
@samitpaudel7886 7 лет назад
Ella yes lots of gems, though some are blatantly sad like the new Mount Eerie album. Take a listen to it its so miserably beautiful. Been stuck on that album.. When you said incredibly sad and beautiful, the notwist song pick up the phone immediately came to my mind. Check it out if you haven't.

Being exposed to his music does that. Suddenly music isn't about boxes and rules anymore. About Carrie&Lowell, it can never be my most played album, because it absolutely wrecks me every time. I don't want to break apart every day. It's still one of the most beautiful records I have ever heard, no question about that. I'll save it for "special occasions".

is truly beautiful how in Should've known better he says "my brother had a daughter" as if that meant the light and joy a newborn sometimes brings, specially in families who have suffered the death of a dear one. and it also reassures the idea of life being a never ending cycle; with a death comes a birth. simple and lovely.

You should really check out For Emma, Forever Ago by Bon Iver. It’s so emotionally raw and sounds like pure pain to me. The way I see the album is kind of like the stages of grief, starting from depression, angst, regret, you name it, and ending with Re: Stacks, which, to me, is acceptance; and one of the best songs ever written in my opinion. In short, For Emma, Forever Ago and Carrie & Lowell have very a similar feel and make me emotional every time I hear them.

I've been a long time fan of Sufjan. I just want to thank him for putting a voice to his sorrow. My best friend, my Grandmother died 5 years ago and it still breaks my heart. She may have been the only person in the world who truly understood me. She was my superhero and left me due to cancer, completing a devastating year of loss which included the miscarriage of my first child. Life is not fair, but it can be awfully beautiful at times. This album helps a grown man peel away the calluses and cry. Thank you, Sufjan, for sharing your broken heart. I feel less alone when I hear your music.

My dad passed away two weeks ago due to long-term health complications. It was late at night as I sat a few meters away from his coffin mourning him with one of my aunts. I played Death with Dignity and Should've known better on repeat. I was somehow relieved he was gone because I knew how much he suffered. However, in his own words, my 5-year-old and only niece, "kept me alive all these years". I stared at the "amethyst and flowers on the table", I got what Sufjan felt when writing "is it real or a fable". "my brother had a daughter, the beauty that she brings, illumination".

There's a tiktok trend going around called "Sufjan Stevens Summer", And It was most probably started by someone who watched CMBYN for the first time and liked Mystery of Love and Visions of Gideon, I've got nothing against them and I'm happy they got introduced to Sufjan through a very beautiful movie, but those who have listened to Sufjan's other works excluding CMBYN, know that he isn't summer at all. For me, this live version specially is Fall music. When Fall rises I get ready with Bon Iver and Sufjan Stevens, which are IMO top 2 indie folk artists that have ever lived.

It’s a sad song, but at the end when he’s repeating we’re all gonna die, for some reason it brought me comfort. So today I got to pick the soundtrack in the car because it's my Bday. Listening to Sufjan, driving from Whistler to Vancouver (one of the planet's top drives), and my daughter and I were talking about what a Sufjan Stevens concert would even be like. We wondered if we'd just be crying the whole time. Now watching this, I'm thinking, YES. Am I right?

sufjan is one of those artists that manage to have a conversation with you through his music. even though i've never met him, his music feels like talking on the phone with an old friend. he radiates such a peaceful and beautiful aura, i just feel safe listening to it even during the most tumultuous times. but the most beautiful thing, in my opinion, is his love for music. you can feel how he pours his heart out in every song, lyric, note. playing live or in a record, he truly conveys a feeling very few artists have achieved to do. i hope he tours sometime soon so i can experience this at least once in my life. love your music, sufjan!

When he came to Bass Concert Hall in Austin during this tour, I went to both shows. Two of my favorite memories. Never been to a show like it. I'm glad I could see it sitting down, in a concert hall with a perfect view. It made the performance so much more meaningful. He was free to perform the set like it was a rehearsed piece of theater. Knowing the subject matter of Carrie & Lowell, I was moved to tears multiple times by the astonishing intimacy he was able to share with the audience. My plus one for the second night, who had no background on Sufjan, cried her eyes out

I've watched this show a few times...and it's fucking amazing. What is it bout Sufjan? Obviously he's a talented old stick...but what gets me...what stops me in my tracks, is his ability to trail blaze and lead the way with taking us, as listeners, on a journey, that transcends so much of the routine way of doing life. For years now, I've considered him a 'gate way' artist - somebody who provides permission - and a pathway for others to follow...how to find peace in chaos and to reassess our understanding of beauty. And it's beautifully exampled here in real time with this show. Sufjan..I don't fully understand where you came from and how you continue to be...but I'm so pleased that's the case...because you've made the journey that bit easier...thank you.

The evil it spread like a fever ahead It was night when you died, my firefly What could I have said to raise you from the dead? Oh could I be the sky on the Fourth of July? "Well you do enough talk My little hawk, why do you cry? Tell me what did you learn from the Tillamook burn? Or the Fourth of July? We're all gonna die" Sitting at the bed with the halo at your head Was it all a disguise, like Junior High Where everything was fiction, future, and prediction Now, where am I? My fading supply "Did you get enough love, my little dove Why do you cry? And I'm sorry I left, but it was for the best Though it never felt right My little Versailles" The hospital asked should the body be cast Before I say goodbye, my star in the sky Such a funny thought to wrap you up in cloth Do you find it all right, my dragonfly? "Shall we look at the moon, my little loon Why do you cry? Make the most of your life, while it is rife While it is light Well you do enough talk My little hawk, why do you cry? Tell me what did you learn from the Tillamook burn? Or the Fourth of July? We're all gonna die" We're all gonna die We're all gonna die We're all gonna die We're all gonna die We're all gonna die We're all gonna die We're all gonna die
