LYRICS:
Light struck from the lemon tree
What if I’d never seen hysterical light from Eugene?
Lemon yoghurt, remember I pulled at your shirt
I dropped the ashtray on the floor
I just wanted to be near you
Emerald Park, wonders never cease
The man who taught me to swim, he couldn’t quite say my first name
Like a father he led community water on my head
And he called me “Subaru”
And now I want to be near you
Since I was old enough to speak I’ve said it with alarm
Some part of me was lost in your sleeve where you hid your cigarettes
No I’ll never forget
I just want to be near you
Still I pray to what I cannot see
In the sprinkler I mark the evidence known from the start
From the bed near your death, and all the machines that made a mess
Far away the falcon flew
Now I want to be near you
What’s left is only bittersweet
For the rest of my life, admitting the best is behind me
Now I’m drunk and afraid, wishing the world would go away
What’s the point of singing songs
If they’ll never even hear you?

beachsquint Because people are crying over the idea and execution, not because of that lyric in particular. This song and this album is far more than the sum of its parts.

I started to listen Sufjan Stevens after watching call me by your name, i believe, as many people did. It's really weird, even the way he writes his songs reminds me of that movie but in general his songs make me feel like i'm watching a movie somehow. And the lyrics are something i've never experienced in other songs before. It's so sincere and hauntingly beautiful. I'm just glad that he exists.

If someone makes this album into a movie, I think we'll all pass out from the greatness behind it.
@tommyo.3535
@tommyo.3535 4 года назад
In order to pull that off the director would have to get the dual meaning behind a lot of the lyrics: he is at once attempting to conjure old childlike memories but more often than not relying on and evoking the childish and unhealthy vices in the present (ie. at the time of heavy grief over his mother's death.) There's a yearning for connection and recollection of any kind with his mother but there's nothing there. No closure at all. Sure this could be done with film but the landscape photographs accompanying these videos already do enough, I think.
@jakepicker7363
@jakepicker7363 4 года назад
My friend i would watch that movie over and over again! the closest thing I can get to a movie for this album is to write my thesis on it! (which is actually what I'm doing! Im conceptualizing the grief Sufjan weaves into his lyrics with the understandings of grief and mourning from contemporary scholars in grief! its really fun to write.)

This song brings up such specific memories for me since I lived in Eugene as a teenager, plus seeing Sufjan playing it in Portland, with the crowd laughing at the Subaru line, then him legitimately choking up later in the song when the emotions of the song coupled with him being back in Oregon got the best of him. Probably the most real and raw moment I've ever experienced at a concert. It's right near at top of the heap for me

This song and Wallawa lake Monster are like small snapshots that could almost be my life, I almost feel like I have those same memories, they are similar enough to feel connected to these songs in a way I haven’t felt connected to a song before. I learned to swim by a lifeguard that led community swim lessons on the beach on Cape Cod. My Mother was an alcoholic, heavy smoker and my Parents are divorced and have been since I was about 2. I’m also Gay the only difference is I’m a girl but it’s still so similar it’s funny but it’s also sad that that could be such a universal memory for so many people, I don’t like the idea of anyone living a similar sad life as mine it makes me feel horrible.

listened to this last night, the day before my brother's 15th birthday. He's disabled, can't walk or talk- doesn't know that though so he's probably the happiest kid around. his life will be short though. sort of an unspoken truth in our family, i remember being told when i was young he'd probably only live til around 17. It hit me like a bus last night, how i've sort of ignored this anticipatory grief and tried to hide the inevitable fact that my brother will die, and his death will crush our family. There's not anything that can be done about this fact, it can't be prevented in any way. Thought i'd write about this here cos last night this song drowned every cell in my body with sadness while soothing me at the same time. I'm glad im confronting this now, i am determined to enjoy the time i have now with him and hold this pain close with me. Fuck its taken me 17 years myself to realise this though

I think "Still, I pray to what I cannot see / In the sprinkler, I mark the evidence known from the start" is an underrated line. To me i'm imagining when you see a rainbow in the mist of a sprinkler. To see that beauty at an emotional moment (in this case, a loved one on their death bed) could be a strong symbolic moment, to which Sufjan ascribes a connection to a higher power. That symbol is confirmation to him of what he's known all along, god is watching. I think a lot of people have had this moment without verbalizing it. A beautiful coincidence happening at just the right moment that it couldn't have been an accident.

This whole album reminds me of quiet afternoons sitting with my favorite English teacher working on stuff for a program I was trying to get into. He has always believed in me, and he always made sure I knew he was there to listen to my thoughts and ramblings when I thought no one else wanted to hear them. Sufjan Stevens was one of the first artists he introduced me to, so every time I play his songs I feel a bitter-sweet twinge in my chest. Although those special moments have passed, I can still feel the same warmth and support I had three years ago, and I know that there are more people out there who want to listen and to be heard.

My great grandmother passed away a year ago. I remember sitting with her as she played with me. I always ate yogurt at her house and I swam for the first time at her house. The best is not behind; it is everywhere and still to come. The pride Carrie must have felt in her son and his songs will live forever. Every time he sings a new one as universal as this, it will be heard. And the song itself will hear Carrie's glowing approval.

December 2014- a few days before Christmas- my husband said terrifying things to me that gave me my first panic attack and marked the beginning of the end of our 16-year marriage. 6 weeks later a friend my age died suddenly in his sleep. A few weeks later another friend committed suicide. Shock, grief, I was in a fog. Meanwhile I had tickets to see Sufjan. I didn't have anyone to go with me so my (then) husband came. Sufjan sang every song from this album- the most beautiful sounds I've heard, the best concert I've been to, no question. I turned next to me and saw my husband- how do I process this? I don't know. All I know is that Sufjan helped me cry. I felt bonded to you that night, Sufjan. We both had something to grieve. This is the song that stuck with me the most: "I want to be near you."
