jim jay ● Someone probably said that because, at 17:43, somebody at the broadcast studio typed "Sugar Ray Leonard in the dark trunks" on the screen. They were just trying to undue any confusion. Clearly, anyone can see that Leonard has the "light" trunks on. LOL
OMG THE COMMENTATOR CALLED SOMEONE 30 YRS HIS JR. A BOY!!!!!!!!! OH THE HUMANITY..... meanwhile 99% of black men call every white dude he sees WHITE BOY. Pussies the lot of you.
You can talk shit about Ecklund all you want, yes he did crack, but he he got clean and now he's got a much happier life. Stop looking for problems in his past and look for the solutions in his future.
Leman Say what you want but there is no hope for that anus of a city LOWELL, MASSHOLECHUSSETTS. I used to live in that sewer. Heroin I'm not sure but Ecklund liked the rock but hey what else do you do in Lowell, Mass. FFS
Ouch! heroin is an ugly beast, changes the perception of the world and damages the chemical balance of the brain, leaves heavy consequences on people's lives, one of the most devastating drugs for man, I want to encourage Ecklund and wish him good luck , I hope that the environment in which he is both intelligent and mature enough not to make him weigh his past but above all offer him a worthy path! Ciao!
@@joebagodonuts7563 isn't that so crazy?? Sugar ray Leonard has always been viewed as the clean cut 'America's champ's style. Pegged as the good guy vs angst ridden fellas like Duran etc etc... but even ray will tell ya the demons he fought the whole time
Yea he is hella good for that even Ray said that was a tough fight and he faced against some of the best in boxing history and this guy gave him a rub for his money its like rocky vs robison the skills serpas the heart but great fight
francisco4benites I miss the welter weight fights like this. No big bears getting tired and having a cuddle for 3 rounds straight. Lots of action. These fights were the reason I originally got the HBO on the box.
It wasn't a knockdown. It wasn't a slip. Leonard tripped over Eckland's leg while moving backwards. By coincidence, Dicky was pushing Leonard as he tripped. It's so obvious.
@@863NightOwl it's a mandatory 8 count you buffoon because his back touched the mat. this match was far from pristine and the ref is really all over the place, it took them 30 seconds to announce it wasn't a knockdown but if you're SR you take the 8 count because why the fuck wouldn't you, this guy just tripped you i'd make him wait 8 seconds.
Now that definitely was a slip, but can you imagine actually knocking down a great like this being a no name fighter and then having the balls to step over him like that? God damn boxing sure was something back then.
"It" was a knockdown/push/foot-stomp/slip. What "it" was, has never really been as interesting to me as was, Sugar Ray's reaction to "it" when he was on the canvas and immediately after when he gets up. When knocked down, Ray rests his head back on the canvas (as if he was legitimately knocked down). Then when he gets up, Ray's body language, especially in his arms, hands and shoulders were that of someone whom had just taken a legitimate knock down. Regardless whatever "it" was Dick Eklund, went the distance with (arguably) the greatest boxer of all time here and its THIS (fact) that should never be taken lightly and which should supersede all else here.
I won $350 when Sugar Ray Leonard knocked out Roberto Duran in the 15th round, but this Dicky Ecklund is a whole other class of fighter, he was on a whole different level.
Explain how he was on a whole different level, and he lost the fight ? You guys say weird ish When his level of fighting is no different than any other Guy Ray Leonard put in his place.
A future hall of fame fighter Sugar Ray showed incredible style and balance against a local street fighter who stood his ground and competed. Dickie Eklund paved the way for Mickey Ward with his determination. A classic period piece of fighting lore that is a must see for true fight fans
haha Nice! dickys a funny guy legend in lowell for many things good and bad but iv seen kids go from the street life to the west end gym type life because of him and thats what i see the most!! was awesome to come across this video today lol
Love it when they both start clowning at the end of round 5! Props to SRL obviously. But note Dickie's ability to switch-hit from Orthodox to Southpaw... that shows good pedigree.
The pay difference is really sad. Eklund was being used as a stepping stone but wasn’t going to let Leonard off the hook that easily, and with 300 am fights, he shocked probably everyone being able to keep up. 4000$ purse compared to Leonard’s 35,000$. Too bad he didn’t win. He would of had a much larger name
Dicky's name shouldn't be brought up in the same sentence as Micky Ward how dare you ward became a champion while dicky became a crackhead criminal, to be fair dicky did recover and has yrs of sobriety, but comparing their boxing career NO comparison.
Why doesn't anyone see how dicky ecklund uppercut himself on 26:14? Slow it down if you must, but after he did that, he was leaning on SR because he was dazed. He did himself in.😢
this Dick Ecklund fighter has a weird foot dance and he's got weird evasive jerky movements ...his punches becomes kind of imprevisible because of his weird unique style of movements ....but he was good ! (is he Mike Ward's brother ?) ohh and last round both guy's gave awesome combinations but Eklund should of got a count from ref in last round because it was clearly a knock down !
george young sorry to differ with you sir but micky ward fought agains't arturo gatti in the 90's and this video , here , is obviously from the 70's early 80's .....so it may be micky ward's brother or whatever ...the name is different too ..hummm ?
Oh, Sh--! At 3:52, "If you're watching in color, Ecklund is wearing the blue trunks and Sugar Ray Leonard, the Black boy, is wearing the white trunks." Haven't been so shocked watching a description on TV since I saw an Our Gang episode when Alfalfa was describing his friends to a new kid in the neighborhood and said, "...and the Colored boy is Buckwheat." LOL!
3:50 "If you're watching in color, Ecklund is wearing the blue trunks and Sugar Ray Leonard the BLACK BOY is wearing the white trunks." Hmmmm...how come Ecklund isn't the WHITE BOY wearing the blue trunks?
And? Things different back then. You cant change what he said with a youtube comment. Racism is different these days. You cant let the past anger you. I disagree with what my ancestors did, but I also had nothing to do with it personally. I love all races, culture, and differences. We all should. Every race has certain people with hatred for another race. But honestly, I live in the south. If racism was full blast, it would be here more than anywhere. But its not. The media and government loves to keep us angry with each other because it keeps us distracted, my friend. Divide and conquer. Why do you think there is two political parties? It's a concept that dates back to the Roman era. It works, and we're victims. All of us. We all face oppression in this date and economy. So appreciate each person. You never know what that person has been through to stand where they are.
@@tannerholmes1587 cut the clown shit...lets not play word games...theres no such thing as a 'different' kind of racism! Racism is racism plain & simple
U already know exactly if it was the other way around they wouldn’t forget either just remember on both sides Even if you don’t say racist things But don’t care much when your race is getting racist to another race but get mad when people are being racist to your race then You are also racist I’m White and black but I only see 90% of the time people only caring when it’s their race being called names
Dicky made Ray Leonard show him what he was capable of in the 6th round when dicky got a little to confident a tried to throw a little combination, Ray said let me show you how it's done and put him on the canvas lol 🤣 Ray being the classy guy he is, allowed dicky to finish the fight in his hometown without embarrassing him with a knockout if that's not classy i don't know what is😅 to be fair dicky put up a damn good fight
I have never seen a fight so full of bias in my life, Sugar knocked him down with an uppercut in round 9 and his buddy just let him start fight ing again no 8 count worst officiating I have ever seen in boxing except the Emile Griffith fight where the REF purposely KILLED the fighter an did no jail time believe dat!!!!!! Not even arrested they even let him watch the replay and still didn’t arrest him
Take the piss out of Eklund if you like, especially after watching "The Fighter". But he made $4,500 for this? Even in those days that wasn't enough to pay his mother/manager/sisters, his real trainers, the fight promoters, the venue promoters, advertisers etc etc... The guy would have been lucky to walk away with $30 on a good day. No wonder he went back on drugs and kept telling everyone he was the first person to put Leonard on the floor. Regardless of whether or not it was bollocks.
It's called capitalism where people have different economic conditions which very often not depends on there skills and talents.A guy from poor place or getto has only a few chances to develope his skills. I'm sure that in other situation Ecklund and his brother Micky would become a greater fights
You can see his left foot slip when he goes to brace himself 38:29. Clear on video, but not so clear to the ref on the spot. If Leonard would have gotten right up maybe it would have seemed more the slip that it was.
Wow, Dick Ecklund was pretty darn good, went pretty much toe to toe with Sugar Ray the whole fight. They both also seem to have had very similar styles, both equally moving, bobbing and weaving non-stop throughout
Cuz it was actually a slip if you play it back slowly you can see the other guy didn’t throw a punch and Leonard was trying to throw a left uppercut but slipped the ref made the wrong call but whatever
Because Sugar Ray was sometimes overly flashy, his sportsmanship was sometimes overshadowed. In this fight, for him to hold up Eclund's hand like that at the end was truly show of great humility, sportsmanship and class. Eckund went wrong from here...but found redemption through his brother--as we all know.
@@mma1015 This boxing match was back in 1978. Crack didn't come around until the 1980's. The commentator said Ecklund was a Fast liver, meaning, basically he liked partying, which back in 1978,could've just meant he liked to drink,or smoke a joint. As for Cocaine, which was popular with the Wealthy back then,I kind of doubt that Ecklund could financially afford a habit like that. My guess would be that he liked to go clubbing and drink too much at certain times.
@@robertdecker4780 It was call Freebase you did it yourself with powered cocaine. Your referring to readyrock. (Crack) He made enough and spent it all.
the man was a ghost in the ring, beautiful foot work, Dicky was very clean with his movement... it's truly sad to see how drugs can ruin such beautiful talent...😔
Either Ecklund pushed him or SRL tripped moving backwards. That being said, Ecklund is a helluva a fighter. SRL tried his best to KO him and couldn't do it. Watch closely how SRL missed so many shots because Ecklund moved so well. SRL clearly won the fight but Ecklund won the fans. SRL is a great fighter but it does not take away from Ecklund's performance. To get knocked down 3x and get back up and last 10 rounds with the legendary SRL only proves Ecklund had a lot of HEART. I tip my hat to both of them. Nuff said.
Eklund was a natural. Good movements, courage, pace and strength. He faced an all time great on the rise and held his own. He could have been a more successful boxer based on his talent.
ness boy I think he began to mess with drugs later. Better promoting background maybe? In professional box it's essential. He was entertaining to watch, poorer white guys could identify with him. Boxing is a way out of poverty. I don't mean to be disrespectful towards Micky but Dicky seemed a lot more gifted and schooled fighter than Micky who actually made it.
dimmykarras made it to what bro , being a professional boxer ? Did dicky became better with the usage of drugs or made him worse and started going down hill ?
ness boy Obviously drugs made him go downhill in every sense. I don't defend his bad choices, all I wanna point out is that he had natural talent that he sadly wasted. With the amount of boxing talent or even with less he had many guys reached more success. Well, Micky was world champ, wasn't he? Not in the most prestigous organization, but he did do a great job. The encounter with Gatti is a legendary one. I believe that Dicky helped him a lot become a champ. His experience, knowledge and also his former mistakes to avoid.
dimmykarras of course the movie was really interesting because I am in boxing as well we'll and even as a child we experience or some us grow up around these things and it's sad and yeah ur right bout that the drugs and Micky was a phenomenal fighter that likes to work the inside and dicky was a outside fighter
You could see that Leonard learned a few tricks from eklund a little bit after 33:15 you’ll see Leonard do the same defensive maneuver that eklund pulled off a few times in the fight where he used a stretched out stiff arm to deflect a jab or straight right hand.... this is testament to Leonard’s intelligence as a fighter, most idiot top fighters nowadays don’t acknowledge some of the defensive maneuvers that some journeymen pull off when they last the distance with them, this shows that Leonard is smart enough to learn from his opponent in the middle of a fight instead of being prideful... and eklund all through the fight showed very good skill and defense throughout this bout, fun and educative fight to watch here
@cloudlounger6903 only thing dicky taught Ray was he had a hard head, Ray been doing footwork all his career, if anyone got schooled it was dicky, if you want to become champ 🏆, stay drug free.....😊
