It is very important that the initial splint is applied correctly at the ER or Urgent Care. Patients are usually referred to an orthopedic doctor, sometimes the doctor will continue the care in a splint to allow for swelling to minimize. If the splint is incorrectly applied or insufficient, they will replace it with a new one. The patient will be charged for another splint!
We have created easy to follow professionally made videos. These videos have pearls from over 50 combined years of orthopedic experience. We have created many of our own techniques that simplify the process.
For our splint videos we use a stockinette as a base layer. If you prefer to just use soft roll directly onto the skin, you can follow instructions the same without using a stockinette.

After 25 years as an ortho PA, I've migrated to an ortho walk-in clinic. Most of my positions over the years have not required much in the way of cast and splint application. I've done several of all of them but not with the frequency to really dial them in. I've been binging on these videos in hopes of perfecting my game going forward. These videos are super helpful.

Hi Brian, we appreciate the feedback! It’s nice to have a basic knowledge of how to apply each cast/splint and more importantly understanding what you are treating and why you are putting on the specific cast or splint. With your background and knowledge you will do great!

What do I do if I accidentally get this wet?

Use a blow dryer. Don’t remove it unless your physician is okay with it. You may want to even consider going back into the office and have them re-wrap you, depending on how wet you got it.

@@mcsmedcastspecialists1285 I work as an ER tech and we advise the patients not to get the splint wet because the skin will macerate underneath from the moisture. At our hospital we wet only one side which is enough to activate the fiberglass to harden and we put the dry side toward the patient skin that was wrapped in webril If you accidentally forget to close the foil from the fiberglass than the thing will harden without any water just from the moisture in the air.

@@anaborcean2000 awesome, thanks for your expertise! We also educate patients and let them know that they should never get their splints/casts wet. We lightly wet both sides, but ensure we dry it thoroughly as well. You are right though, it doesn’t take much water to activate, so just getting one side wet should be adequate.
