The History:
Installed in 1995 as part of Les Otten's major project to improve infrastructure, the Slide Brook Express finally connected Lincoln Peak and Mt. Ellen to form one unified resort. Ever since Sugarbush acquired Glen Ellen in 1976, plans were rumored about connecting the two, and finally, that happened in 1995. Connecting them wouldn't be easy though as the Slide Brook Express had to stretch over 11,000 feet making it the longest chairlift in the world, a title that it still holds today. In order to reduce ride time to only 10 minutes, it was designed to operate at 1,100 feet per minute. In its heydey, Slide Brook ran every day to provide a reliable connection between both sides of the resort. The idea was that one skier would pick either side to start their day on before skiing both areas and finishing their day where it started. In 2001 though, that all went downhill. The new owner, Win Smith did not believe a connection between areas was necessary with the new vision he incorperated, so he began operating the lift on weekends and holidays only. After 2004, Slide Brook's most apparent problem shuttered its operation even further. As Sugarbush progressed with many great improvements, the idea of one cohesive resort was quickly fading. Evacuation access is very difficult due to most of the liftline being remote and quite far away from either side's trail system. That combined with the liftline being full of obstacles results in it being very difficult to evacuate. Instead of investing in clearing the liftline and providing easier access to the liftline, a rule was simply created that only allows it to operate with 1 1/2 feet of snow underneath it for easy access. Around 2015 it began to operate on 7 days of the week, but even with that, it rarely operates. It opened for the first time on February 1st, 2020 meaning that it was unoperational for what is often the most attended weekend, MLK weekend. With Ikon bringing in more and more skiers, crowds need to be spread out around the mountain and this lift is crucial for doing that. On weekends it is greatly appreciated by skiers looking to ski both areas of the mountain in one day. Hopefully, Alterra can make efforts to help ensure that this lift can operate for more of the season.
The Lift:
Although Slide Brook is a massive lift stretching over 11,000 feet and crossing 40 towers, it is still a pretty standard Doppelmayr second-generation UNI lift. It uses a UNI-M drive at Mt. Ellen and a UNI-M return and tensioning terminal at Lincoln Peak. It also uses 101 EJ carriers held to the cable by DT-104 grips. The lifting frames are Doppelmayr's late 80s-90s "Y" style lifting frames along with Doppelmayr sheaves. Capacity is only 1,200 p/h due to this being a lift that most people only ride twice per day. Capacity is really only about 900 p/h though since this lift usually operates at about 900 ft/min, although it is running slower in this recording. Since this lift sits for most of the year without operation and little maintenance, it is in poor condition. Hopefully, it can be refurbished in the coming years to ensure that it can operate for years to come.
Specifications:
Design Speed - 1,100 ft/min
Normal Operating Speed ~ 900 ft/min
Capacity - 1,200 p/h
Drive - Mt. Ellen
Return - Lincoln Peak
Tensioning - Lincoln Peak (hydraulic)

At 7:02 there is a road. This road is the reason that Slide Brook doesn't run very often. It has to have 1' 1/2 of snow on it, and they have to groom it. This is because of evacuation, so they are able to get Snow Cats and Snowmobiles into the bottom of Slide Brook Basin. Also 8:10?????? What was that!?

Think that noise you heard was the chair and the vibration when the lift started moving after it stopped. Most lifts do this.

That is the sound of a chair vibrating. Chairs on chair lifts have different vibrations and sounds varying throughout

Thanks for making this video! I was reading an article by the guy who wrote All 750 lifts in North America and he said this left was his favorite in the Northeast.

That's the world's longest lift I ever seen in MY life. This lift should have been made into a GONDOLA if it was this long.

Nice video. I will be an Ikon Pass holder next year and I plan to get there and ride it. They don't run it full speed anymore, but it's still way quicker than the shuttle bus which takes over half an hour (Sugarbush is too cheap to run their own so they rely on the public bus that makes over a dozen other stops along the way). Their excuse for not running this lift is one of many things. It's either too cold, too windy, not enough snow underneath, or whatever else they can come up with if they don't feel like running it. There are other lifts that are in no-man's land when it comes to rope evac's like the gondola at Whiteface, yet they can run if there's no snow under the lift. All they need is a couple work roads in the vicinity of the lift and they're all set.

The shuttle is operated by Green Mountain Transit and takes about 20 minutes. I had dinner with Win but never really asked him why they don't run Slide Brook. Glad you enjoyed the video. I will be a season pass holder at Sugarbush next year as we are in the process of buying a condo.

I looked at the schedule and it said like 38 minutes. Who is Win? I guess Sugarbush is quite the upgrade over Stratton.

Win Smith is the owner of Sugarbush!! Sugarbush has way better skiing and is a lot less expensive. I took a ride and had dinner with Win and my mom at Rumble's Kitchen. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-w6nUmNV-LAQ.html

Wow how did you get to meet him? I've met a couple GM's over the years but only at mountains that I ski very frequently.

Since we are looking to buy a condo, our realtor gave me a day to ski with John Egan. My dad is also doing some business with Win. Very cool experience. Nice guy.

They try to run this as much as they can, but there needs to be a good snow coverage under the lift shall they have to evacuate it.

Slide Brook was supposed to run this weekend, but they couldn’t due to the cold temperatures. It really needs to be running every single day they possibly can (they haven’t been running it even though there is enough snow). Sugarbush cannot consider themselves one ski area if you have to take your skis of and get on a bus to get to the other mountain. It’s ridiculous. I feel they should’ve built it from base to base so it didn’t go through a completely isolated area (but that would ruin the amazing views you get from it, which is an upside to that). Also, I might be going to Pico this Sunday! I REALLY want to ride and film the Outpost Double and the two Hall triples.

@teddysliftworld 5 лет назад
Well, they just received enough snow this past week. Once the temperatures climb into the 20s this week they will make sure to get it running. Once they get it running, they keep it running as long as they can. Do you mean that you are going to Pico tomorrow (the 13th) or next Sunday, because I am going next Sunday on Martin Luther King Weekend! Maybe we'll see each other.

Would a 3S gondola similar to Peak 2 Peak work in this location? It could mean fewer towers and a high-tech evacuation system.

Put a gondola in w/heat, to long and looks freezing to me. I can't imagine on a windy day that is worth the ride to another mountain.

Do you know why they run it pretty much every day in March? I went in mid-March 2019 to Sugarbush midweek and it was running all day, everyday, while mid-season they only run it occasionally on weekends.

South to North (Lincoln to Ellen)

The perfect example why you should not build a chairlift on long, remote routes as it can only operate when there is plenty of snow beneath it.

Would be a perfect route for a 8/10MGD

Maybe I am crazy but two separate lifts up each ridge and a bunch of bowl skiing would be better.
