My father was always singing short jingles and this is one of them but he never got past "sugar at supper time". Now I'm here because I'm singing it and wanted to know what the song was from. Rest In Peace Pa 1921-2011.
This was one of my favorite songs from childhood. Just yesterday I spotted a McGuire Sisters cd in a store and bought it right away - played it all the way home in the car. The McGuire Sisters were unbelievably fantastic. There was a movie out about ten years ago about Phyllis McGuire's relationship with Sam Giancana played by John Turturro.
the 50's was the best part of my life. i was born in 1944 and was old enough to remember all of the 50's i think that those years were the best in really bringing up kids. back then you could punish your kids and not have to worry about someone reporting you to anyone. i know that i punished my 2 boys and even sometimes gave them a crack on their butts but i never left any marks on them, and you know what, my 2 boys still love me very much.
Kids, that incredible harmony & brightness in their voices is all natural. In those days audio recording didn't have the electronic wizardry that exists today to make voices sound much better than they really are.
I've met these three ladies and believe me, they are sharp sharp sharp! Very intelligent, very articulate and their shows were a model of total preparation and detail-oriented rehearsal. They heard "Sugartime" while in Texas and when Coral didn't show that much interest managed to get it on the back side of "No More," a cover of the DeJohn Sisters hit. Most people have no idea the McGuires ever recorded "No More" while "Sugartime" became a multimillion seller.
Actually, the flip side of "No More" is "Sincerely". The flip side of "Sugartime" is "Banana Split". I have enjoyed your various comments on these ladies. I saw them in person five times during their comeback in the 1980s.
Perry Como will always take good care of Dorothy McGuire upstairs in heaven after Dorothy's passing Friday afternoon September 7, 2012 at the age of 84.
You're right, in that it wasn't all simple and happy. I was the teen-aged son of a single (divorced) mother, and it wasn't all that great. But some of the music sure was sweet!
This hit by The McGuire Sisters went to #1 on the Top 40 charts. It also went to #14 in the United Kingdom. It would come in at #26 for the year, 1958. As we make our way to the top, who will be #1? Will Elvis Presley make it three-in-a-row? Or will someone else take the torch? Stay tuned.
Thanks for this interesting information. Greetings. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3X7-wxCZLsg.html *BLUE SUEDE SOCKS* Rockabilly Gibson Guitar in the style of *Elvis Presley*
Great Harmonies and there is a definate charisma to Phyllis McGuire. I mean the video is from 1958 and Phyllis still stands out. It's easy to see why the McGuire Sisters were popular and that is because of Phyllis McGuire's star power.
+Carol Thebeau, You might have seen the Lennon Sisters doing Sugartime on the Lawrence Welk Show. They were regulars on the show and covered all the great hits. If they are singing live in this video (I'm not sure), it could be the Ed Sullivan Show. All acts were performed live, in contrast to shows like Beechnut Show and American Bandstand, where all artists placybacked their hits.
It's funny how some people tend to think famous people from the 40s and 50s didn't have scandals. Really wasn't much different from today, it was just kept quiet.
That's so true. The press helped keep the lid on being fans themselves. Now if they can't get a scoop they make something up. The Phyllis/Sam affair was in the open because they were blackballed.
