The real reason why "people" made it a "East Coast versus West Coast" isn't really cause those magazines... Biggie’s "Who Shot Ya?" Has Puffy yelling his antics and he starts mentioning "East Coast, West Coast" And this goes BEFORE what he's talking about because it just wasn't Biggie’s subliminal dissing or hidden messages aimed at someone but Puffys in the hype man talk thing saying stuff. Plus on top of all that there is stuff from the 1994 Source awards where something was going on but people refuse to show the whole tape and then the televised Source Awards 1995 where Puffy said somethings during one of the songs before Suge got up there but people often miss these subliminal things and the hating part. Tupac wasn't a super start off his first album but had some good songs but then he pulled out these hit singles and feats between first album and second full album all while doing Juice and Poetic Justice and that later movie is what really shot his name up but at that same time in 1993 he had some crazy feats that were summer anthem bangers that other rappers like Snoop pretty much took entire lines from Tupac's bars and because people forgot how underground rap works and how Dr Dre himself was warmly welcomed by MTV with Snoop (see this is a huge factor, if they play your music widely, people are gonna know it more than if it's underground takes a while but people into hip hop know but mainstream casuals don't) so at the end of 1993 the "average rap fan" associated many of Tupac's written bars as if Snoop created them. So also unfortunately Tupac had that run in with those plain clothes cops who weren't carrying their assigned firearms and instead had a firearm from the evidence section which is funny because Tupac's last movie Gang Related has elements of crooked cops who take firearms from the evidence section and use them instead of their taxpayer paid firearms that can be traced to them as they were running set ups on people. Point is that if you look back into 1994 when Puffy had Biggie approach Tupac and Tupac being kinda gullible helping people out and letting Biggie sleep at his hotel, paying taxi cabs for him, giving him money that he didn't see his style was being copied which is why Tupac eventually got set up while in NYC even though he finished Above the Rim with a villain role as a villain as opposed to main character.

I've always heard that the Suge/Puffy beef stem from a financial dispute and it wasn't from the issue regarding 662 and Biggie performing there. The way that it was told to me actually make more sense to some degree as to why things took off like it did. I could be wrong in this. Maybe Reggie could confirm this or not. I don't know the exact date or time but, this may have possibly been in the spring or summer of 1995. (Supposedly) Essentially, Puff had an issue with some people over money & reached out to Suge for some strength to get his money. Suge got the money for Puff, gave it to Puff, and not long after asked for a cut for his services. Again supposedly, Puffy didn't give Suge a cut and that created the issue between Puff and Suge. It said that Suge publicly dissin' Puff at The Source Award in 95 was Suge's way of getting back at Puff. I've always heard and read that whether it was their meeting in The Tunnel after The Source Awards and even the night that Jake was killed, that Suge and Puff was trying to resolve the financial dispute. The lyrics of the song aren't hostile, but they mock NYC slang in the intro then the chorus, "everything in NY aint always what it seems", rappers from NY can say that but rappers from outside can't say that. Especially after Suge dissed Puffy in stage in NYC and there was already tension between NYC being too arrogant. So Dogg Pound comes to NY to shoot the video for their diss song. Reggie and Dogg pound and them acting like if it wasn't for Biggie, nobody would have shot the trailer. Funk Flex was doing what the biggest hip hop DJ in your city would do if he found out a diss song against your city was being shot. He was like NY, you letting them do this? And somebody from Red Hook shot at the video shoot. Flex might have got Biggie on the phone on air to make the point but if LA street dudes find out, however they find out, that a diss video against LA is being shot, they're gonna do about the same thing.
