If you play RPGs, there’s a 112% chance that you know about the Suikoden series. Whether it’s the lorded over ps1 entries, or the less well received ps2 library, Suikoden has made a name for itself in the gaming community, but no one ever talks about the only spin off Konami ever attempted. So can a traditional turn based rpg share a bed with a grid based strategy rpg? Let’s find out in my review of Suikoden Tactics.

Finally someone gives Suikoden Tactics the credit it deserves. I know that FFT raised the bar pretty high and Disgaea and made that bar roughly 3 miles long, but there are a bunch of interesting strategy games out there that are overlooked. Onimusha Tactics? Dynasty Tactics? That one game for the PS1 that I keep forgetting the title of because I only rented it once during the summer of 1998 because of the Amano art making me think it was related to Final Fantasy? (I remembered it, Kartia.) There is definitely more gems to be unearthed. If only I had a hyperbolic time chamber play through them.
@AvalancheReviews
@AvalancheReviews 8 лет назад
Oh man!!! I remember Kartia! Ha, I rented it too. Don't remember liking it though. There is a metric shit ton of strategy rpgs between the ps1 and 2. I'd love to own em all. I only played a little of Onimusha tactics, but the premise alone is enough to sell me on.

Ahh Suikoden. Love those games. :) And I'm glad you chose to talk about this game, as it doesn't get as much attention as the rest of the series (I mean, it being a spinoff, that makes sense, but still). Maybe it is the strategy RPG loving bias I have, but I enjoyed the game from start to finish. I can see some people who aren't already fans of the genre having trouble getting into it, especially with the lengthy battles and that the game does take a while to get going in general. But it's still a game I'd recommend to fans of SRPG's. ;) Great review! Hope that you cover more strategy RPG goodness in the future.
@AvalancheReviews

Oh man, don't you worry. At any one point, I am typically playing at least one SRPG. It sucks that it takes so long to get far enough through them, to put a review together, but worst case scenario, I just end up playing sweet SRPGs all the time. Ha

It's interesting looking back at how so many JRPG series gave a strategy RPG a shot during this period around the time games like FF: Tactics did well. There was this one, Valkyrie Profile later got one, there's the Wild Arms strategy game. I'm surprised Enix didn't try for some sort of DQ strategy game spin off.
@AvalancheReviews

A DQ spinoff would have been awesome!!

Love how the intro sounds a bit like the beginning of roller mobster and your use of may's theme intercut with game footage is well done

I'll have to look this game up it's looks really interesting. I've somehow got into the suikoden games through 2 and I really like them so I'll have to look this up. It's too bad it's not on psn so I'll have to go look up the game somewhere else. Good video man.

The good news is, it's cheap as hell, but if you don't have a backwards compatible ps3, that might not do you too much good.

Please never stop making videos! I've played, loved, and beat Suikoden 1 & 2 and own 3 but haven't started it yet so I'm glad you did this video! So crazy to see how different Konami used to be even when they were a little past their prime IMO. They went from being one way a couple decades ago to now being the exact opposite in a lot of ways. Just sad that these are the dicks that own so many of the most beloved franchises in gaming.

I have to admit that the designs really killed this game for me. I couldn't stand looking at the NPCs without eyes and the scenes of humans turning into stupid-looking fish monsters honestly made me a bit queasy.
@AvalancheReviews

Yeah, the whole obsession with sea life kind of brings this and suikoden 4 down, but there's a good game buried under that design.

Hey Jared nice review. Have you played the persona series by any chance? I grew up with the ps1 games and recently played the P3 port to psp. Awesome games i think you really should review them. P2 could even be considered a trashed classic.

Oh yeah! I owned a copy of Persona 2 at launch, but it was stolen. Since p2, I have been a huge fan. I'm still in the process of beating the vita port of 4.

I can see a lot of Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together influence here. It has the elemental affinities between the tile's element and that of the character standing on it. The people who made Tactics Ogre (and Ogre Battle) went on to develop Final Fantasy Tactics. Let Us Cling Together is probably one of the most complex 90s strategy games on console. There is another youtuber called Lorerunner who has an excellent review of it. It is an hour and 24 minutes long.
@AvalancheReviews
@AvalancheReviews 6 лет назад
It does have a bit of that complicated feel that the TO games have. I want to cover the PSP remake of Let Us Cling Together. That's one of the best strategy RPGs I've ever played. I'll check this guy out. I love long, detailed reviews!

playing through Suikoden V currently, the first Suikoden game I've played but I have III and IV as well. V is the same also, it starts off very slow, I think I was about 15 hours into the game when it finally started to get interesting, now I'm 80 hours in and loving it!

Suikoden Tactics really surprised me. I had heard mostly mixed-to-OK reviews about the game but I ended up really liking it. I never finished it for whatever reason but at least it was better than the game it's a prequel to. :D But about Suikoden Tierkreis.. I never managed to play it too much, but I can tell you it has little to none to do with the core series or the Suikoden Universe in general. It basically just uses the Suikoden name and some concepts of the core games (mostly terminology). I personally wouldn't recommend buying it unless you can get it for cheap. If you do get it though, go at it with lowered expectations and try not to compare it with other Suikoden games too much. What I can remember of it, the story doesn't revolve around war with neighboring countires etc, as it does with other Suikoden games - it's not as down-to-earth. Basically it's all about parallel worlds. And the story itself takes place in one of these parallel worlds, effectively removing the one thing that (to me at least) made the main series so interesting. I'm sorry if my opinion of the game comes off as very negative. I think I was being too strict when comparing Tierkreis with the core Suikoden games. Then again, I think it's a problem when a game is so different that it's hardly the game it is supposed to be.

Nah, it's all good! I'm glad to hear any opinion on the game. Think i'll emu it first and see if i like it :D

There's a PS1 game I would like to see your view on called vanguard bandits. I think it's a good game to get people interested in tactics games. it has a solid story and interesting characters. I can't recall how long the battles take but I doubt most of them are over the 25minute mark.

@AvalancheReviews
@AvalancheReviews 8 лет назад
A lot of those ps1 era jrpgs had really limited pressings. Since there's not a shit ton of them out there, people tend to go insane when pricing them. It sucks that prices are controlled by that kind of crap.
@kairon156

Avalanche Reviews It's too bad PlayStation doesn't re-release their old games perhaps with a special logo on the CD's showing that it's a modern print. Perhaps that's one argument for console emulators. To be able to play games that are very hard to find. It also helps that there are Console controllers made for the PC.

Great review, just missing comment on the music. Some of the tracks in this game are phenomenal. If you can get passed the cell shaded goofy character models, this is one of the best SRPGs to play due to its depth and rewarding gameplay. I honestly rate it up there with the likes of FFT and Tactics Ogre, from pure enjoyment factor. Also play and beat Suikoden 4/IV before playing this to get a special character and complete the package of the story setting Konami had created.

You're right there. I typically do like to talk about music, but sometimes I figure just having it playing in the background, will make sure people watching the video understand how great it sounds.

This looks pretty groovy, I love them SRPGs, and the cons don't bother me much... except having ∆ as cancel! What sodding toss pot on the localization teams of the late-90s/early-2000's decided we suddenly can't handle O-confirm/X-cancel? It worked fine for Final Fantasy VII, MGS, FF Tactics.... (/rant over)

Bought this about 6 years ago, and have tried to spark it up a handful of times. The intro is so fucking long and tedious that I quit every time. When a game manages to make a life-long JRPG player quit due to a boring intro... That's a fucking feat and a half. might have to push through at some point though. It actually looks solid.

Avalanche Reviews no i mean isn't HUD is for first person and in other cases that would be GUI?
@AvalancheReviews
@AvalancheReviews 8 лет назад
+tsartomato Yeah gui would probably fit there too, but you can't interact with it. they're pretty interchangeable in this sense.
@tsartomato
@tsartomato 8 лет назад
Avalanche Reviews can't interact with GUI? but it's literally called "interface" unlike "display" also isn't HUD from aircraft and isn't it a part of GUI afaik the point of GUI in games\soft is to differ it from previous command-line\textual UI like the difference between command line based OS and windows 1 envelope for dos i dunno is it something like calling proprietary "PC"s (personal computing units) "consoles" (user interfaces like command line, keyboard or screen) and calling "computer games" (games with gamemaster and the rulebook being emulated by the computating units) "videogames" (games for vhs players)?
@AvalancheReviews
@AvalancheReviews 8 лет назад
+tsartomato in a tactical rpg, before an action, a display pops up showing attack percentage, hp, and a bunch of other shit. Since it can't be interacted with and it's only a display of stats, it's more of a hud, than a gui.
