European companies are often found to cause or contribute to appalling human rights abuses and environmental harm throughout their global value chains.
In this video, we look at a case brought against Swedish mining company Boliden after it paid a subcontractor to export industrial waste to Chile, where it disposed of the toxic sludge without removing the arsenic.
This caused awful health effects, including cancers and neurological disorders, for people living near the site.
In 2013 victims took legal action against Boliden in the Swedish courts.
The story quickly turns into a David vs Goliath story.
The victims eventually lost their case, leaving them not only with life-threatening diseases, but €3.2 million in litigation costs.
