Thank you! Thanks for the comment! At JKS, in addition to the 26 main Shotokan kata, there are 22 Koten kata. Each of them is aimed at developing certain qualities, abilities... For example, Rantai - develops the technique of kicking. If we talk about Suishu, then in this kata paired (simultaneous) hand work is improved. In my "bragging frame" and certificates I have certificates logo's of JKS(Shotokan), WSKF, Karate no Michi, SKI, Tenshinkan, JSKA, etc. It is unfortunate that the JKA split up following the death of Nakayama. Started withm JKA - we did not know the name Shotokan but were privilaged to train with some of the first well established instructors who brought karate to our country - Stan Schmidt, Eddie Dorey, Malcolm Dorfman (now Hanshi second in line to Yahara). tI've got a nice selection of Nakayamas books. All this being said - Shotokan remains the main style. The JKS I suspect is that of Kawasoe? Asai was an interesting eclectic practitioner. My only grudge - some of his stances and techniques we were told (before it became known) are wrong so we got punished. I started after hour studies at the University of Pretoria at age 26 and it so happened that registered students could join any sport at the sports,department at no cost....and I spent my last year there doing some Judo. What a great martial art.....but it also gave exposure to JSKA, KIMURA SHUKOKAI, Japanes Goju. I realIsed that there was a lot that could be used for kata bunkai. Working on this, which gave me a huge advantage over my opponents and Aikido (in the day we all loved Steven Seagul 🫠🫠) but had to study literature, I realised there is plenty to use as well. So, if you have not done it as yet, have a try - it adds a lot of dynamic to your karate and fill the Heian kata's with bunkai. Not only that - you get to understand just how much applications there are in the basic movements - gedan berai, shuto, mae geri. I used to be the chief technical instructor for the style we trained - it was in a "transfer period" when karate worldwide was somewhat in disarray. Eventually our chief instructor joined JSKA.
