Right, but I remember people saying Ward didn't look that good in that fight either, as if he was supposed to destroy Barrera or something. In hindsight, Ward deserves more credit for the win and how he won imo and if Barrera keeps on winning, people will look back at that fight with a different perspective I think.
***CORRECTION: Ward hurt Kovalev with the right hand, but never dropped him. As you guys know I watched the fight, and reviewed it...but my memory gets a bit fuzzy when I aint slept enough lol***
Didn't Kovalev already fire that bitch promoter he has? He certainly should if he knows what's good for him. Anyway... great win by Barrera, i didn't think he'll do it, but he did. I'd certainly watch the Kovalev fight if it happens, but i have a feeling Barrera's going down more than once in that fight :) If Kovalev is the same as he was before of course - we don't know yet how much that 2 Ward fights took out of him.
In the first fight Ward went downstairs and it genuinely helped him squeak out what was a contentious decision. In the second fight he went 'further' downstairs, to make sure of the win.
trevhib yeah but on both occasions the body work is what did the most damage to Kovalev. No point tryna jab with Kovalev or bang with him, your gunna get laid out. You have make him work more than he wants to, tire him out with body shots and close the gap between you and him.
Yeah, my comment says: in the first fight the body work "genuinely helped", i.e. it was a good tactic, one not used by Kovalev's previous opponents. My comment however is mainly pointing out that the 'body work' in the second fight was somewhat 'further down' the body.
trevhib do you honestly believe the only body shots Ward him were low blows? I admit there were low blows in there but Kovalev should have made it his job to return the favour rather than cry about to the ref. When the ref doesn't protect you, you gotta protect yourself imo. Barerra if he is smart will work the body below and above the belt because clearly Kovalev doesn't seem ready for a dirty fight.
Looks like you and I agree, there were some low blows in there. What Kovalev should and shouldn't have done in response to those is a different thing, that I haven't commented on so far. Some would argue they respect him more for not retaliating, some will say he should have retaliated because the ref didn't protect him. I find it a bit rich blaming the fighter who's receiving the low blows when he's not the dirty fighter causing the fouls or the incompetent ref. I agree maybe he should have done but in my book he's third in line for criticism.
I guess depending how Kov is doing mentally even though he won the first fight and was winning the 2nd till that terrible stoppage..but I still think Kov will KO Barrera. Hope this fight happens.
