This needs to be repeated everyone so often. In real life, the investigators did none of this. They pegged Sully as a hero pretty damned fast. All of this is nonsense just to have some drama in the movie.
@joshuagrover795

In the real investigation, the NTSB very quick determined the aircraft was brought down by a bird strike, their wasn't any attempt to blame the pilots from the start.

I suspect the reason we got Flight (2012) is that Sully is just too darn mature and competent so they had to create a fictionalised event.
@st0rmforce
@st0rmforce 3 года назад
If they could've done a 180 and landed back on the runway, it would have been much safer than a water landing. Initial simulations suggested they did have enough momentum and altitude to turn around, so there was a serious investigation into whether the right choice was made. Eventually they found that Sully was right. By the time they were ready to make the decision (checked the plane's systems and made the mayday call), they'd lost too much height to turn round.
@despe666
@despe666 3 года назад
@@st0rmforce they addressed that in the movie. They could have made it back if they started to turn towards the airport immediately after the bird strike. No reaction time, no calling ATC, just turn and hope you don’t hit another plane.
@st0rmforce
@st0rmforce 3 года назад
@@whatisgoingonherebruh1 What I meant was that there had to be a full investigation to make sure the right choice had been made. Lets say there was a tiny bit of thrust from an engine, or they were higher when they hit the birds, or something like that, then a turnaround could have been possible. It didn't need to be a tight turn if they had enough hight. IF it was possible to safely turn around, an emergency landing on the ground would definitely be safer than on water. Listen to Sully and Jeff talk about how risky it was. Water landings are dangerous, no matter how calm the water is. If he'd miscalculated and there was enough margin to turn around, then in choosing the river he needlessly endangered everybody. So they had to make sure he'd made the right choice. And everyone agreed that he had.

In the actual investigation of flight 1549, the NTSB was totally professional and understanding towards the pilots (even Captain Sullenberger and First Officer Skiles praised the NTSB investigation). The chief investigator Robert Benson is a former Air Force pilot and airline pilot and had flown the A320 himself and quickly concluded through flight test simulations that ditching the aircraft in the River Hudson was the correct decision, its very rare the NTSB gets the wrong conclusion to an accident or incident their usually very professional.

@roadwarrior144
@roadwarrior144 4 года назад
Sylvia Divinora Yes, all of that makes sense, but in the event of the loss of both engines, why is activating the APU 15th? If you loose both engines, why not start the APU first, because it will provide electrical power to communications and hydraulic pumps to control the aircraft. I wonder, is it because the air-driven generator is deployed first, and the next task is focused on re-starting the engines? If so, that would explain why, in another clip, Skyles was reading off the checklist and said “optimum re-light speed: 300 knots.”
@sylviadivinora2286
@sylviadivinora2286 4 года назад
@@roadwarrior144 yes, relight speed relates to restart engines, the RAT comes out immediately and provides hydraulics and electrics. I think the APU is no emergency equipment on Airbus, takes minutes to run it all up. I think it is really mainly intended for ground operations and to give a tiny extra of takeoff power in hot and high conditions - taking over pneumatics (bleed air for A/C) and electrics from the engines
@john.doe_0007
@john.doe_0007 3 года назад
One of the main factors why all the passengers survived was that the a320 was able to land on a water surface and to stay floating for about 30 mins, Airbus made the aircraft that way. A normal aircraft would sink much quicker, this was never mentioned in the film.
@johndean4998
@johndean4998 2 года назад
I'm not sure if "a normal aircraft would sink much quicker" - I've never heard of a valid comparison being made. But it is certain that if a passenger hadn't opened one of the rear doors allowing river water to flow into the cabin then the a/c would have stayed afloat for even longer. Also, even though the initial impact caused superficial damage to the belly, the a/c's fuselage didn't rupture, and that structural integrity ensured prolonged buoyancy. Broken metal tubes sink rapidly.

Sully had to land the plane with the wings perfectly aligned with the water surface, otherwise one engine would have hit the water slightly earlier, the plane would have rotated and broken apart. What is impressive though is he managed to compensate for Jeff's moustache during the maneuver.

Why does this feel it's "damned if you do and damned if you don't" with this situation? He landed the plane of the Hudson river and saved the people on board from years of experience and not following the rules and they're not happy and finding fault. But if he did follow the rules and they ended up crashing, causing the lives of hundreds of people, they still would have found fault and blame the pilot.

Maybe you should read about the actual investigation rather than the movie portrayal of it. Eastwood's script made the NTSB guys out to be assholes, cos it made for more drama. Even Sully asked for the script to be changed, and not include the real names of NTSB people because it did not portray them properly. The real investigator in charge, a guy called Benzon was actually a former US Air pilot, and had previously flown the very plane that Sully and Skiles landed on the Hudson. Benzon also personally tried the simulations and concluded that Sully made the right call because the chances of making it back to La Guardia were not good enough. If portrayed more realistically then the movie would have had one major point of drama - the birdstrike and landing, and then just the grinding process of a drawn out inquiry.
@Ahuc899
@Ahuc899 6 лет назад
From what I've heard the movie plays up the investigation side of things for dramatic effect, and in reality this wasn't nearly as antagonistic as it's shown in the movie. The investigation did happen, and part of that was going into detail of every decision made in the cockpit to understand what happened and how it could have been improved, but the intention of the process wasn't to villify Sully, but rather to understand what happened and how we can better react to similar situations in the future. Yes, this involved playing Devil's advocate on a lot of decisions made, but again from what I've heard I think everybody was on the same page of what the purpose was.
