From "Findery":"Monday, March 1, 1976. Lt. Col. Michael A. Love, 37, chief USAF test pilot on the Martin-Marietta X-24B program, is killed in the crash of an F-4C Phantom II on a dry lakebed at Edwards AFB, California, after take-off on a proficiency flight when his ejection seat malfunctions. Navigator Maj. E. B. Underwood, Jr. ejects before the crash and is hospitalized in stable condition".To clarify, I believe the cause of the crash was a hydraulic failure, not caused by the seat as the post alludes- the malfunction was the cause of death. I had just opened the back door of our shop (Weapons) to drive to the "hot gun line" and recover other F-4s returning from training flights, and the fireball of the crash erupted directly in front of me, probably around two miles away across the open plane of the lake bed. Incredibly, we were allowed to walk through the hangar where the wreckage was stored about a week later. The Phantom is a large fighter, but the largest piece remaining I compared to the size of a VW Beetle.'

F-4 Phantoms are ALWAYS trailing smoke.
@E39Passion
@E39Passion 7 лет назад
Ryan Taylor With "peace setup" yes, with "combat setup" not. The smoke only appears when the engines aren't running on maximum temperature to operate them more sparingly and with less attrition. When the F4 is used in combat missions, the engines get a setup with higher temperatures and the smoke disappears due to the higher temperatures, the smut gets burned totally. In "peace setup", the afterburner has got the same effect and there is no smoke when it is used. ;)

@jivebomber4536
@jivebomber4536 7 лет назад
At idle (64-66% rpm), the J-79 wasn't very smoky. Take it up to 80% rpm or higher, and it smoked terribly. The ass-end was caked in soot. In Afterburner, no smoke. In the mid-1980s, USAF Phantom J-79 engines were modified to lessen the smoke. They burned hotter with a higher fuel flow, but the difference was night and day. The afterburner flame was no longer orange; low smokes burned almost blue. We only changed a motor when we had to, so for a couple of years, it was the norm to see Phantoms with one smoker, and one low-smoke. Because of the different limitations for the two type engines, a "L/S" (Low-Smoke) label was stuck above the gauges for that engine. The first time I saw a "low-smoke" F-4 on short final, I thought he had an engine out. (He had a smoker and a low-smoke) Prior to low-smokes, you could see an F-4 miles away (unless he was in full-AB or at idle). To minimize being spotted by bad guys, we would pull one throttle back to idle and push the other in to the first stage of AB. Not the greatest way to operate, but it produced a smaller smoke signature. Put both motors in AB and there goes your gas.
@Jackson1969.

The Phantoms they used in the movie were actually QF-4 target drone conversions that live at Holloman up until they are ultimately shot down by some lucky fighter pilot in a training scenario. The QF-4s are perfectly flyable by humans though and the AF actually authorized a couple of these birds to fly demo at airshows around the country, sort of a last farewell before they become missile bait. Cool to see them have a some movie screen time before they are gone forever though. :)

Funnything about radar paint. There's a B-2 and an F-117 at the National Museum of the Air Force, WPAFB. You can actually walk under the B2. I've been told by staff that they have caught Chinese and Russian "tourists" scraping paint off of the B2. Assumption being they think it's the radar-absorbent paint that is used on the operational versions. On those displays it's just regular household paint lol

@jeremymendoza1465
@jeremymendoza1465 7 лет назад
Considering it costs more tax dollars and safety risks to fly these aging aircraft (almost 40 years old) just to keep them airborne, I'd say it's a fitting way to go about retiring them via testing out new weapons systems on them as opposed to just letting them rot in some hangar.
@E39Passion
@E39Passion 7 лет назад
Tex Rittenberg Here in Germany the Air Force (Luftwaffe) was using the F4 until 2013 in active duty and also to ensure air supremacy. No joke... It is a very reliable and powerful plane, but it is just not up to date anymore. And yes, the Luftwaffe took them out of service because the maintainance costs were higher and higher, spare parts got rare more and more and they had to start cannibalism and to scrap F4s to get spare parts to use. I know it's a shame for this awesome and beautiful fighter legend...

First of all, Sullenberger is a true American Hero. I greatly respect him. An observation: In shot 00:30 the lead F-4 STBD missile rack is empty. At 00:53 there appears to be one missile on that same rack. At 00:59 the missile rack is empty. And, at 1:52 the rack has a missile. Does anyone else see that? My question: The sound track is a little muddy for me. What was the emergency? And, Why would a smoking jet engine cause the F-4 to be unstable?
@Akm72
@Akm72 7 лет назад
I don't think it was the jet engine, he never says that he's lacking power but he did say at 0:12 "...feels like hydraulics."
@sparrowlt
@sparrowlt 6 лет назад
the smoke wasnt from the engine.. and as he said first "flight controls problem (...) looks like Hydraulics" something went wrong with the hydraulic causing control problems (probably surfaces moving arround wich would cause the plane to wobble arround) and if something in the hydraulic system went boom that could be trailing smoke but from the fuselage, not engines ..thats why his wingman upon inspection says "you look dry, still trailing smoke", no aparent hydraulic / fuel leak , but smoke coming from .. Its a very standard procedure when troubled to have wingmen to visual check your plane's underside to see if fluids are leaking or there is any visible damage
@reedmartin8212
@reedmartin8212 7 месяцев назад
Those F-4's belched smoke, out of both engines, usually. That made them very easy to see coming in the Vietnam conflict. And, they were gigantic aircraft. Much bigger than MiG-15's or MiG-17's. Anyway, the plane appears to be flying all over the place on the way back to the air base, and so I think there was something else wrong other than the engines. He was able to power up and keep the F-4 aloft, and avoid a stall, he said, by landing at high airspeed. Some combat jets are more responsive at high speed than at very very slow speeds, which is why for slow speeds, you need something like an A-10.

Isn't it a bit redundant to ask for your heading when you're on final to runway 21? Also how was his heading 020??? Cool scene anyways.

If he is having trouble holding the plane in the air its not a bad idea for him to do an instrument approach so he doesn't wast time looking at the runway.

Not to be a annoying kid online, but on the taile of the aircraft when they landed it says "NA" and then at night it was "NY" ? aLSO HE Landed on runway 22.
@HarvestTexas
@HarvestTexas 6 лет назад
NA was the real-life tail code for the 474th Tactical Fighter Wing that was based at Nellis AFB but that unit was deactivated in 1989. The scene in the movie with that tailcode was re-living Sully's experience when he served in the USAF. The plane with the NY tailcode is likely on static display on the aircraft carrier Intrepid on New York's Hudson River where Sully went by in the movie where it was supposed to be present-day. The NY tailcode is currently used by the New York Air National Guards' 174th Fighter Wing.

@Avofan

windingpath he's matching his airspeed. Lowering the landing gear will prevent a stall.

Lowering the landing gear has nothing to do with preventing a stall... He's doing it in order to generate extra drag in order to slow down.

Instructed to land on 21, manages to fly a heading 020 approach to land on runway 22. Ah Hollywood, never change

Runways are not always exactly lined up with the magnetic heading and also he could have been coming in at a 1 degree difference than straight on. But the 21 vs 22 is a hollywood mistake.

In the movies, no matter what the problem, the plane has to wobble.
@DrSabot-A
@DrSabot-A 5 лет назад
Early fighter jets has a tendency to wobble and oscillate under damage or control surface malfunction like Sully experienced here..but i doubt it would shake *THAT* much
@sparrowlt
@sparrowlt Год назад
Well they had to film real Phantoms and fake a controls problen.. all they could do to show the audience there was problems was shaking and wobbling... same as Sully name on the jet.. i really doubt he had his name on the misshap jet (most US pilots rarelly fly the jets with their names on it even if they got them in the squadron as the jets are asigned from maintenance.. there is no "personal" jet)

That's common. Example Runway 4R up here at Metro Detroit is actually a magnetic heading of 036. The clearance for runway 21 and landing on 22 is just a Hollywood mistake.

@1641King
@1641King 5 лет назад
Sham Kichu To show a past experience where even under extreme circumstances where it seems that he could not reach the runway, he still went for it because he knew he could do it. Further enforces that if he felt he could make it back to the runway when the plane got struck by birds, he would have went for it. He knew there was no way he was making it back to the airport and so landed on the Hudson.

Most military airbases have a cable across the runway at either end that fast jets can hook in case of emergency. You can see the one in this clip at 1:50 (the yellow dots mark it).
