I'll never forget when this song debuted on rock radio. An entirely different recording, with a guitar sound like no other. "Look Mom... no pick." Spot-on, good job.
Me to I'll never forget that time in 1978 mate when I 1st heard it I was like a mouse trapped in a cheese factory that was the old cassette days now it's all full Monty one gifted musician to all M.K & D.S fans God bless you all please stay safe happy and healthy cheers from Australia
I've still got that sultanas of swing single from 78 on vinyl, with Eastbound train on the B side. Love the username XTC and my senses are working overtime.
About 25 years ago when our kids were babies, my wife wouldn’t let me play guitar in the evening because it was too loud. So I started finger picking. One cannot truly hear the guitar and appreciate it’s musical nuances until it is played finger style. Beautifully done Dylan!
It is fascinating to watch. It’s guitar, so most people are accustomed to seeing a pick, without it though it’s like seeing someone play bagpipes or some other odd instrument 😂
This is as good as a cover can get!.. I've been playing this song for more than three decades, but nowhere close to this kind of playing. In my opinion, this is arguably the best cover of Mark Knopfler's all time classic. You truly deserve a standing ovation!..👏👏👏
I take my hat off to you 👏 I lost my Dad in February this year. He was the most majestic guitarist I’ve ever seen. He absolutely fricken loved this song and could play it on point. I searched covers to listen and reminisce, damn I wish recording was a thing back then 😭 Thank you 🙏🎸
Absolutely nailed that! Holy shit..blown away! Love the fingepicking..and I thought I was doing okay the way I was learning to play it! I suck! I should sell these damn guitars
3:41 to 4:01 You hit every subtlety present in the studio recording perfectly. Even the slightly quieter expression of the notes at 3:49 to 3:50. The reproduction of the finest details present in the original recording is really incredible throughout, but I think this section is really next level.
I keep coming back to this cover. Out of all the countless covers I've seen, this is best of them without a doubt, absolutely sensational. Your fingers move as if you're naturally gifted, which also reflects how much work you have put it in. Keep playing !
That cover is near perfection man, you cover every part of the song. The rhythm with the right hand, riffs, the final solo was great. I study this song for years and know how tricky it's to put all together. Congrats man!
I am definitely one of Mark knopfler's and Dire Straits biggest fans. First time I saw Dire Straits play was in a College gym just outside of Washington DC I believe it was Alexandria though that was many years ago and have recorded many of their shows since then. And like everyone else I've heard many many cover of this song but I got to say this is one of the best! Well done.
Out of all of the renditions of this song I've had the opportunity to listen to, I could close my eyes, and not tell the difference between the original recording, and someone else doing it. Very well done!
Wow! As someone who has tried to nail this track for literally decades.... your accuracy of note and tone coupled with economy of finger movement is remarkable!
tenho 62 anos gosto muito desta musica e voce eu tiro o chapéu o melhor cover nos minino detalhes de execução se fecha os olhos parece o proprio dire straits parabéns meu jovem sucessos top.
I'm 50 and started playing guitar at 12 after hearing Megadeth, but I remember loving Dire Straights and Mark's guitar sounds Dire Straights was the first record I ever bought. They got really big in the early 80's . You play his music very well. Great work keep the videos coming. Awesome thanks bro.
Elegante, me hinoptizo' y no solo lo repeti' sino que lo guarde, senti estar escuchando, a knofler mi favorito entre todos los grandes, que estilo perfecto, FELICITACIONES.
I heard this for the first time in about '78 in the bar attached to the university building (medical department). Ever since I hear or play this music I'm in a time-machine to '78's good memories.
WOW! Great cover! What I appreciate is the camera angle showing your right hand with every nuance of how it's picked. I'm trying to master this song and that's the hardest part for me. Thank you!!! Awesome job!
Congratulations. Simply amazing. Playing guitar like this is an art by itself. The last solo never, NEVER fails to give me the chills, no matter the thousands of times Ive listened to this song.
I can't believe what I just heard and saw! This is by far the best guitar cover of 'Sultans' that I have had the pleasure of enjoying on RU-vid... and there are many, as you probably know. If there is such a thing as 'perfection' than this is it. I used to play it, not nearly as good as you but good enough to know where and what the tricky parts are. I have only seen one girl who uses right hand fingerstyle like you, and Knopfler of course and it DOES make a difference. You an hear it, it's softer and never sounds scratchy and you're not falling over your notes when the fast part comes. Every note you play is spot on in every respect. I swear, if someone had played this for me without my looking, I'd have thought this is the original. You also seem to be resting your right hand pinky at the same time Mark does. When I talk a lot, that means I'm excited, sorry, lol. Now I'm going to explore your channel until I fall asleep! 🎶🎶👍👍
Lyrics You get a shiver in the dark It's a raining in the park but meantime- South of the river you stop and you hold everything A band is blowing Dixie, double four time You feel alright when you hear the music ring Well now you step inside but you don't see too many faces Coming in out of the rain they hear the jazz go down Competition in other places Uh but the horns they blowin' that sound Way on down south Way on down south London town You check out guitar George, he knows-all the chords Mind, it's strictly rhythm he doesn't want to make it cry or sing They said an old guitar is all, he can afford When he gets up under the lights to play his thing And Harry doesn't mind, if he doesn't, make the scene He's got a daytime job, he's doing alright He can play the Honky Tonk like anything Savin' it up, for Friday night With the Sultans We're the Sultans of Swing Then a crowd a young boys they're a foolin' around in the corner Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles They don't give a damn about any trumpet playin' band It ain't what they call Rock and Roll And the Sultans Yeah, the Sultans, they play Creole Creole And then the man he steps right up to the microphone And says at last just as the time bell rings "Goodnight, now it's time to go home" Then he makes it fast with one more thing "We are the Sultans We are the Sultans of Swing"
Watching your right hand helped alot. I was moving it around too much, especially my thumb, spinning around in circles. I'm alot more.controlled now thanks to this. I've known how to play the notes and fills to this song for a long time. Thanks to you it actually sounds like the real thing now with just a little practice.
To anybody trying to play the song, this vid is a godsend. A birdseye view with the track and its played immaculate. Thank you very much. Your a great player.
Mark himself would have to be super proud of that performance. That was amazing !!! Extremely well played with deft touch ! Thank you very very very well done !
I must add another comment that i just read that is similar - you have just pretty much produced the actual track that was mixed in the album to perfection. I have just played the actual track again now after hearing you play it and you would not be able to pick it wasn't the actual track if you hadn't been told. Extremely well done, a truly amazing talent ! I very poorly try and play it with a pick .... absolutely amazing !
