Im not sure if you are aware of it, but you referenced Chet Atkins in this video, there are some RU-vid videos of Chet Atkins and Mark Knopfler playing together and talking about music.
I'm 54, didn't pick up a guitar until I was 22. I'll try my hardest, but I'll never be able to play this solo perfectly as you do. I have to say that you definitely give me the confidence that I can DO IT!! ....and that my friend, is a great teacher on many levels. Thank you GP from PA, USA!!!!!
I freaking love you man. Always coming through with high production value. You're a great and knowledgeable player with an awesome personality. Love all your videos
I don't pop my cork for every great guitarist I hear. But. Since I was 5 years old (or so), this has represented pure brilliance to my ears. Other guitar players move me more, other guitar players inspire me more, but I've honestly never heard anything more technically AND musically perfect.
Haha everyone has a lyric from this song that stuck in their heads as a kid. Mine is, "Check out guitar George. He knows all the chords. Mind, it's strictly rhythm. He doesn't want to make it cry or sing."
You are bb king, Mark knoffler, and many others in one person. Not only that you can play the notes, but you do it with a feeling and you teach it very good. You are amazing.
I was always amazed how guitarists such as Mark Knopfler, Jimmy Page, David Gilmour, Ritchie Blackmore, Carlos Santana etc could invent such amazing solos.
Thanks for explain thiss great solo especially as you said , the last difficult part the arpeggio , GREAT TEACHER THANKS FOR SHARE , GRETTINGS FROM MEXICO CITY
I am a big fan of the channel, mainly for the not pretentious but sure advice for guitar lovers, a hug from Brazil and continue with this beautiful work !!!
Increible solos by Mark at that early age. There it was almost already everything of the best of all his guitar playing condensed. So many great stuff in just one song. Good taste everywhere. Thanks por analizing them.
I think this album came out in 1978 when I was a schoolboy. I had just started playing the guitar, a thirdhand crappy Les Paul copy. (Very) many years later I now have two Stratocasters (and two daughters!) and just about enough skill to follow this video. We are a household recovering from a bout of CV 19, and I had a full day of isolation to spend with you Thom, a totally selfish, but 'very good day'! The tips on phrasing and dynamics were particularly useful. Thank you very much once again for a really pleasurable tutorial. JB
Aahh man love it! My first guitar hero It just tickles the ears.. Later on had so much fun jamming on dire straits backing tracks.. Those type of chord progressions as "Sultans of Swing" , "Tunnel of Love", "Where do you think you're going", "Telegraph Road"; Well they are just so suited ( for me ) to play along, as there is already melody in the arrangements of the chords and as such really invite you to intuitively find your way..
Mr guitar pilgrim, this is the most comprehensive, key-detailed & fire tutorial on SoS on all of youtube bar none, &, quite possibly the entire internet (no exaggeration I’ve scoured these interwebs for over a year now & seen DOZENS, all good yet all missing the critical elements you provide) . Thank you !! 🙏🏼 🔥 Issue now though... Sultans can never be fully realized on this platform until (if) you do the other parts of the song too? I for one would gladly help fund a worthy cause such as this & I'm sure I'm not alone. I hope you will please consider .. The world simply needs this ☝🏼
Thanks for this, I've been struggling to learn the 2nd solo for a while now, this is a great help. Amazing you found the time with your new baby. Thanks again.
Me encanta este canal, no me arrepiento día alguno de haberme suscripto. Gracias por todo lo que compartís y la calidad de tus vídeos! Un saludo desde Argentina! No es la primera vez que te lo menciono jaja
Thanks for the good explanation of this great song. I love the way how you showing the different guitar play.....🎸. Keep on going!! Greetings from Holland
Nicely done👌.. love the way you to tap into the personality of Mark Knopflers playing..those subtleties make the difference, its not only about hitting the right notes or guitar/amp settings.
Geek Alert: As previously noted by others, this part does not sound authentic on the neck pickup. During the original recording, MK's guitar was likely outfitted with a high-output single-coil pickup (DiMarzio FS-1) in the middle position. So when correctly played in the #2 (bridge/middle) switch selection, there is some "quack". But due to the powerful pickup, the tone is so middle-PU-weighted that it ALMOST, BUT NOT QUITE, sounds like switch position 3. Also the guitar should be red, to further enhance the tone! :) Love all your videos, and this one was overdue!
I remember listening to a college station in Philly, they were doing a countdown : top 100 guitar solos of all time. They listed this last, 100 out of 100. WHAT. Still pisses me off to think about. Neil Young's solo from Cinnamon Girl was like 30 or 40 spaces higher than goddamn Sultans of Swing.
Hey thom! Great video as always! May I recommend you do a video on Jeff Healy’s cover of “how blue can you get”, dude was amazing and some of the licks he does are incredible
Hey Pilgrim, stop playing the guitar. You are making me look (um, ok sound) bad. Dang nice job. You know you should play professionally! Always love your stuff and your attitude. You act like you really love this. Cheers.
I need callouses! This causes pain! I suppose i should aim my sights a little lower. I just got a guitar 3 days ago after not playing for 20 years. Kids, don't waste your life. Practice daily. Music never gets old.
I've been thinking how hard this would be and should I start learning. Looks like you answered, yeas I should! Thank you for a such of a epic video! Would love to see you look into Freight train by Alan Jackson. Such a iconic country song.
@@cloguitar Thanks for letting me know. Gonna check it next as that has been something I've done with few variations already but just not yet got the speed and feel to work like I want. In other words, help is needed =)
Great tutorial even if played on neck pickup here instead of bridge/middle but who cares... I would recommend though a minor change in the final, fast part. The F note, 13th, E-string, should imo be plucked with the thumb, not the other fingers. It gives it extra bite, makes it stand out more. Plus, you get more « power » left, so to speak, for the pull-off that comes next, which then makes the D note more present. Finally, the F note marks the beat. I think it’s important to stress that note because it gives the phrase more rhythmic structure. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe MK also plays it with his thumb ?
