Suma Qamaña celebrates the spirit of "Living Well" in this four day festival hosted by the Embassy of the Plurinational State of Bolivia, highlighting the indigenous cultures of Bolivia through dance and song.
In this segment, Morenada Central VA - USA perform the Auqui Auqui dance. This dance developed as a protest against the abusive and humiliating treatment of Spanish colonial rule. Indigenous peoples dressed in Spanish outfits and decorated with accessories that resemble the elders wearing their humps, hats, and canes. Given its satirical nature, this dance is full of humorous movements that mock the colonial culture. Auqui-Auqui is characteristic of the city of La Paz, Bolivia, and it has undergone a change in the republican era which gave birth to the dance of "doctorcitos" (or little doctors) a variant of the Auqui-Auqui.
Recorded in the Potomac Atrium of the National Museum of the American Indian on June 8, 2014.
