I rarely visit the "Paris" videos, knowing she suffered so much at the time spoils the feeling for me somewhat! How she sang like this with her heart breaking I will never know. There will only ever be one Sumi Jo, simply the best!!!!!!!
Amazing that Sumi Jo, with her free expressions, can sing so well. In terms of enjoyability, this performance is quite comparable to the Il Bacio sung by Anna Netrebko.
@disquand Coloratura is the name of those difficult and often quick passages that singers do singing series of notes while they stay on a vowel or a syllable (like scales, vocalizes, thrills ecc.) as Sumi Jo does in this video, she's indeed a coloratura soprano. There are also contraltos and mezzosopranos that can do coloratura (especially in baroque music).
She knows the word but she is just singing however she likes and pleases. it's not like math that we have to follow the rules! That is why music is called an art!
@rmcinuk 2 Bear in mind also that her beloved father was dying on the other side of the world as she performed in Paris and maybe allow a little for it not being her best ever performance !
@disquand There are three generic categories for female voice: soprano (the highest female voice), mezzosoprano (a step deeper than soprano) and contralto (the deepest female voice). Generally sopranos can hit the highest notes and contraltos the deepest, mezzosopranos stay in the middle, but it's not only the range that makes a singer a soprano rather than a mezzo ecc., in fact there are contraltos that hit high notes and soprano that hit low notes: it's also the color of the voice and timbre.
I can’t explain it, some people rave about Maria Callas, personally I would rather listen to cats screeching! I freely admit to finding Sumi Jo a stunning lady, that may have a bearing on my view of her singing? However I first heard her sing over 20 years ago on the radio and I instantly adored the voice long before I saw the lady. Enjoy your chosen music as I enjoy mine, at least we both listen to "real" artists!
@expos73 Hi, Rita Streich, doesn't "do it" for me. Appreciation of a voice is almost totally subjective. I I have listening to sopranos for over 30 years and Sumi Jo's voice has a depth and warmth of tone that I hear in no one else! I cannot comment on pronunciation. In fact I quite like not understanding the words of songs, as they are often banal or stupid and detract from the musical experience. I listen to Sumi Jo as quite simply the most glorious instrument I have ever heard.
No te preocupes, Amparito. Estoy de auerdo contigo, Bevelry siempre ha cantado lindo. Igualmente Julie Andrews - en RU-vid aparece cantando Je suis Titania, a los 12 añitos. Saludos desde Lima, Peru
