The cherry blossom in Sumida Park embodies Tokyo.
In 1717, it was established as one of Tokyo's first cherry blossom viewing spots, Bokutei, to take a breathe for locals due to the financial restructuring. Although the area was devastated by a flood in 1846, trees were planted again, and in 1883, after the Meiji Restoration, it became a 3 km long row of cherry blossom trees. Due to the floods of 1907 and 1910 and the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1926, it was again devastated. In 1931, it became a modern Sumida Park with 400 trees by the Imperial Capital reconstruction project. During World War II, the war dead were temporarily buried there, and after the war, illegal occupation continued until 1960 due to a lack of housing. As a flood prevention measure, the height of the area was raised by up to 2 meters between 1961 and 1967, and in 1970, the Metropolitan Expressway opened, and the landscape changed dramatically.
Sumida Park, also known as Bokutei, has experienced all the floods, earthquakes, war damage, and urbanization that have hit Tokyo. It embodies Tokyo's history of disaster and restoration. The cherry blossoms in Sumida Park are a symbol of Tokyo's restoration, which has been revived many times.
One Take like actually taking a walk.
