Published in 2009, The Master and His Emissary is a work of genius written by Dr. Iain McGilchrist, a philosopher/psychiatrist from the United Kingdom. This book forms a critical bridge between the current state of society and the individual and the mental places we so desperately want to go, including a reintegration with the spiritual aspects of life, a new appreciation for art and nature, and a tempering of the ideological fervor that has gripped the world, particularly the West.
This summary is by nature short and relatively shallow in its scope, but it will provide a foundation for this podcast moving forward in my endeavor to integrate the wisdom of the "best books" and hopefully provide a place to exchange insights about the awe-inspiring world in which we all live.
It's time to have a textual awakening.

I just shared this video with a peer and she loved it. She had previously listened to Iain video but it was a challenge to grasp. She said your video was so good in helping her comprehend the left/right brain realities. So congrats on creating such a valuable learning tool.

Just another message for you Jake. I just used this summary again today to acquaint a person with his work. Again it worked very well for that purpose and thst individual is now listening to some of his longer interviews/discussions. Great job!

I’m so glad! I’m actually going to meet Dr. McGilchrist in person in a couple weeks which is pretty insane. He’s coming to Ralston College where I go to school to give a series of lectures. I need to do the chapter by chapter work through of the book I said I would do a year ago. It’s such an amazing book. I’m glad you’ve gotten good use out of this summary.

@textualawakening What a wonderful opportunity you have in meeting him! Oh, how I would enjoy that! Many years ago i had the opportunity to meet and talk with two of my heroes - Og Mandino, a wonderful human being who sold millions of his inspirational books around the world and Dr Nathaniel Branden, psychologist who is considered to be the father of the psychology of self esteem. To this day I still cherish those times. You will, too, as years go by.

This summary is very helpful to me because i use it to introduce other people to this reality. It gives them a brief overview, without having to explain myself or suggesting a video, which can be a bit much for someone.

Thank you for this excellent summary! I'm listening to the book on and off, so your succinct explanation really helps me keep the thread and put it all together. I also listen a lot to Ian McGilchrist on RU-vid. He's amazing! I especially like how you extend his solid research to our present political climate. It's so clear to see what's going on, and what you said here was going through my head as well, but it seems impossible to halt the arrogant left-brain train of thought when it's on a rant.

I relate to some of the left hemisphere characterisations, such as focusing on the parts to build up the whole and using abstract symbols to attach meaning. However some I completely feel detached from, such as seeking to acquire items and status in the world and being fundamentally competitive. Really seems like there’s something missing from the theory. Also the idea of sociopaths having right hemisphere deficits does not line up with my experience, in fact the opposite. The sociopaths I met have actually been over represented in the left handed population, suggesting they are right brained. Some famous examples include Jon Jones, Tedbundy etc. Anyway, I think the hemispheres are important, I think attention is a good demarcation. And I think the right hemisphere is in some way underappreciated. But I think some of the hemisphere characterisation is inaccurate and might just reek of a revenge of the underdog type theory. Similar to the autistic supremacy movement. Anyway, good video.

I understand what you’re saying, and no one theory can every encapsulate all of the neurological diversity between humans. However, as far as the sociopath example goes, it’s important to remember both that each hemisphere is highly involved in essentially any brain function, and that a right hemisphere deficit does not mean that the left hemisphere always wins out on everything all the time. For sociopathic behavior in particular, the right hemisphere deficit theory arises from their lack of empathy, remorse, or sense of external ethics, not from their ability to manipulate people’s emotions (as they are often quite skilled at that). And also, left handedness is not a guaranteed signal of right hemisphere dominance. Correlation between the two occurs on a gradient, not a linear or direct relationship.
