Welcome back to our cottage garden. It’s time for our July garden tour. Have a look at our summer flowering plants including lavender, roses and geraniums. One of our ducks (Coco) is sadly not very well, but she is managing ok and still enjoying her outings in the garden. The tomato and courgette plants are picking up now and the polytunnel is full of life. We hope you enjoy having a look around. This video is sponsored by Skillshare.

I appreciate that you show the places that are imperfect in your garden. It's great to see someone keeping it real online.

Fellow UK gardener, up until maybe the last week or so have seen mayhaps a single bee in the garden at a time. In the last week, however, we’ve seen an increase in buff tails, red tails, tree bumblebees and honeybees (the latter coming from a neighbours garden). Sadly, we’ve only seen one butterfly in the garden - pretty sure it’s the same one over and over - that being a small white. No ladybirds seen all year either

Definitely earily quiet on the bee front and few butterflies being seen, one Red Admiral on my buddleia. Loosestrife easy to pull as roots run along the top of the soil. Some great ideas for planting areas.

Yes same here in Lancashire, a definite lack of bees and butterflies on our buddleia and lavender this year for sure.

Also from Lancashire, and yep exactly the same. hardly any bees and butterflies. Some hoverflies but nowhere near as many as last year.

I’m really enjoying your RU-vid videos! My wife and I recently bought a house and plan to plant a cottage garden. Your garden is awesome and my primary inspiration. If you find the time and think it’d be valuable to other viewers, I’d really be interested in a video going over the structures in your garden (e.g., trellises, edging, screening wall) and how they were built. I enjoy how naturally your built structures add to the cottage garden vibe as a whole. Keep up the awesome work and thanks for the wonderful content!

same here @monalogue in west germany we had less butterflies and bees on flowers and lavenders. Last year 2023 in the summer month we had also rainy summer days - like this years - but the Autum days September and October been dry. Anyways last year quite more butterflies and bees.

I could watch your garden vlogs all day long! It's just started to rain here in Dorset. It's sad not seeing so many bees and butterflies this year. Last year we had two bumble bee nests, something that we've never had before, they were just magical to watch. I've had lots of strawberries (so have the birds) and small variety tomatoes in the last week. The bigger varieties have yet to ripen, let's hope for some consistent sunshine at some point! Thank you for sharing your beautiful garden Mona. Sending love to Coco. 🦆❤x

Sending love to Coco. We've had a tough chicken season as well- worms, one death (tragic heart attack while we were treating her), and one prolonged bout of cytopenia (very scary, thankful to the university for figuring out it was a side affect of the worm medication.) We're in North Carolina, NC, so trying to keep the hens cool.

5:36 Before your lavender flowers deteriorate, cut them, dry them and stuff them into your pillow that you sleep on at night. You probably already know these things, perhaps I am commenting more for your readers than for yourself.☺☺ Going to sleep on a cloud of lavender is really, really nice, especially in the deep, dark winter. 9:14 Asters and chrysanthemums are GREATLY appreciated when winter is close at hand and they are still blooming. I drag my huge Fiji mum plant indoors every winter, it is taller than I am, and the blossoms stay on all winter until March, then the entire plant dies down and begins a new in May.. 14:15 You clematis is a lovely, lovely shade of pale amethyst. 16:45 As I take our bulldog for his 1 1/2 hour walk, I am on the phone looking for the best hollyhocks to start from seeds right now for blooms next summer. I have already a week ago planted four types of pinks so that I shall have their strong clove scent next springtime. My first, foremost love in the flower garden is fragrance, I want a cloud of fragrance around the house as much as possible. Tulips are one of the few exceptions that I make to fragrance because their stained glass colors look when back lit with sunshine, especially after a long, dark winter is very emotionally uplifting. 19:59 Tomatoes will pollinate just simply by being agitated, when lighting is just right, we can see the pollen dust fall out when agitated. I suppose that bumble bees improve things, bu my 50 years experience gardening, just simply winf agitation and beeing bumped will pollinate them. Thank you for the show and tell from your far distant shores! Ralph in Ohio.

Lovely garden and thanks for the tour! I planted yellow loosestrife two years ago and regret it (zone 6B here) - it is nice for the pollinators but it spreads by roots and is taking over! Just keep an eye on it.... Mine went from about two stalks to 40+ in two years.

Lovely garden, and you frame yourself so nicely in each scene. The scene of the duck popping in and out the screen was so charming! Very distressing, however, to see the lack of butterflies and other pollinators. You have done more than your fair share to enhance their habitat.

Your new border looks so established already. I grow yellow loosestrife in my cottage garden in Wales. I think it's beautiful and easy to dig out if you decide there is too much of it. Actually my sneezewort is more of a problem re taking over the borders. Sending healing thoughts to little Coco x

I've had far too much hassle keeping yellow loosestrife under control to leave even a small clump growing here, young plants are easy to remove but older ones become tougher, they spread rapidly. My personal recommendation is to replace with something better behaved or the following seasons you'll be finding it everywhere, that said, it does look nice in flower.

My mom and I also noticed that there are barely any bee's and butterflies. There are some, but not nearly as many as the beginning of this year. (The crocus at the beginning usually lure so many in) It's so sad. And with all the insects we usually have lots of birds and other wildlife, but not anymore and I live on the border of a massive forest. Super concerning.

Hi Mona, Love your garden and channel, keep up the good work! I just wanted to let you know that here in western Denmark we have seen a huge decline in pollinators as well. We have just like you been affected by huge amounts of rain this year, and we do think the decline is because of that.
