A little different to our usual style but in this video Craig heads over to Pirita Convent (Pirita Klooster) a monastery once used for both monks and nuns dedicated to St. Brigitta. Pirita Convent dates back to 1407 and was the largest catholic monastery in Livonia (Latvia and Estonia). During the Livonian war in 1577, Pirita Convent was attacked by Russian troops under the leadership of Ivan the Terrible. They sacked the monastery, looted its riches and burned it down. Pirita Convent was abandoned since then, but Estonians have found a use for these ruins. Destroyed fortification and church walls today serve as decoration for arranging summer concerts and a yearly celebration of Convent’s Day.
In this video Pirita Convent is being used as the set for a medieval movie shoot continuing on from the previous video where we filmed the first scenes for the Tales of Reval tourist information movie over at Olde Hansa: • STARRING IN A MEDIEVAL... (four part mini acting series based around Tallinn) Making History for all to see and learn about Tallinn!
After filming is done for the day, we both head out of Tallinn over to Lohusalu beach to cool off as it has been seriously hot and Kirsty had been inside all day editing videos! Summertime in the Baltics is hot and beautiful!
We also make a quick stop off to take in the view of Türisalu pank which is a cliff edge looking out over the bay. As beautiful as this spot is, it has unfortunately gained a reputation as a place where many people commit suicide, especially younger people.

A British couple from just outside London, England. We got married in 2018 and decided instead of a honeymoon we’d travel the world together for a year. We saved money and travel points, quit our jobs, rented our house out and boarded a one way flight. We started this RU-vid channel to share our experiences with friends, family and anyone who plans to travel to the places we’re visiting. We leave TKT tips/facts on our vlogs and blogs to give information that we wish we’d had before visiting. We hope you find our content useful :)

Pirita Monastry last days The Last Relic / Viimne reliikvia (1969) Tallinnfilm - English Subtitles : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Z93kjIeaiYU.html The Last Relic (Viimne reliikvia) is a 1969 Estonian film based on a historical novel by Eduard Bornhöhe. The film was extremely popular when it came out and continues to enjoy a cult movie status today. When the movie first came out, over half of Estonia saw it in theaters and it broke the all time Soviet box office record, selling selling 44.9 million tickets. As such, The Last Relic is generally considered the crown jewel of Estonian cinema.

Wow! Quite a movie!

The movie was a great success, but it has very little to do with actual history. First, the novel was written in the period of Russification, so it was obligatory to show the Russian attempt to conquer Estonia in a positive mood; in fact, it was probably the worst event ever happened in Estonia, it is not sure how many people survived the total war, and the plague coming with it, but even about 20 years after the war was over, 3 out of 4 farms in Estonia were still abandoned. Then, the movie itself was following the Soviet ideology guidelines, emphasizing the "class struggle". Most of the persons and events are fictive, but the main bad guy, Ivo Schenkenberg, was a historic person, just with a quite different fate - he organized those peasants who escaped to Tallinn from the areas conquered by the Russians to fight against them, and had quite a success for several years, until he was captured by Russians and executed. And, unlike in the movie, the monastery itself was destroyed by Russian troops.

tommye dodson you’re right it is a hidden gem, think Tallinn is pretty full of interesting hidden gems! ☺️
@forgottenmusic1
@forgottenmusic1 4 года назад
It is hard to call it a "hidden gem" though, the monastery is one of the main landmarks of Tallinn and easy to access; outside the old town, perhaps, just Kadrioru Park with the palaces is better known. It is nearly impossible to miss it for anyone looking further from the city centre. It is also the only remaining medieval building outside the old town, as all the surroundings of Tallinn were completely wiped out both in the Livonian war and in the Great Northern War. The size of the monastery church is impressive, but in general, the ruins of another monastery in Padise, about 40 km from Tallinn, are more interesting.

Pirita klooster. Actually it wasn't monastery. Order of St. Birgitta was all nuns. Their abby was, btw, one of the most, if not the most, influentials in UK at one point in time(according to Time Team). Also the name Pirita derives from Birgitta.
