The Mercy of gods is my most anticipated read of this year (it would've been Winds of Truth but I probably won't be able do read that one until early 2025). I loved The Expanse series by the same authors James SA Corey, aka Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham). The character work in that series really stood out to me and when the expanse ended it hit HARD. Probably gave me to biggest bookhangover in a decade. What an emotionall rollercoaster ride. So I was overjoyed when I heard they were coming out with a new sci-fi series! Also I'm currently reading Daniel Abrahams Age of Ash and it is quite different from when he writes with Ty but oh the prose in Age of Ash is beautiful!
I'm all in on the mercy of gods as a total expanse fanboy, and I didn't know Lev Grossman had a new book coming out, but that's probably a must for me too. I'm still waiting for whatever it is that Scott Lynch took those new author pictures for, wishing that it comes out this year. To finish, I know it's not this year, but I'm so unbelievably hyped for the Devils that I can't help mentioning it.
I’m just catching up on your videos and I don’t know if you’ll even see this. But just in case you do,. Here is one recommendation from someone you don’t know. I do not know if you have read what is one of the best contemporary science fiction books I have ever read. It is called Project Hail Mary, by Andy Weir, the author of the Martian. If you haven’t read this book yet, you owe it to yourself to do so. It’s a harder science book just like the Martian, but it’s got so much heart and great character development. It’s the only book I immediately reread once I finished it. And I guess they are going to turn this into a movie within the next couple of years. So anyway, I just wanted to throw this into the comments just in case you have any interest in checking this out. Thanks. Love your site.
Might want to look at These deathless shores, it's a Peter pan/hook retelling-ish 👀 Also 1000% agree on Silvia moreno garcia, all her books sound good but they are so meh
The Bright Sword sounds super intriguing. And I'm down for Black Shield Maiden, as well. I don't think I've read a viking book before, but this sounds up my alley.
Given you're being intentional with your picks, I guess I shouldn't be surprised everything you picked sounded pretty good! I'm terribly tired of both Arthurian and Viking-flavored stories and those two still sound pretty tempting. The Seventh Veil of Salome reminds me of Nghi Vo's Siren City that was up for the World Fantasy Award last year, I'll have to pick that one up from the library sounds like. The Dead Cat Tail Assassins was SO GOOD. Definitely one you want to read!
I have not read a good murderhobo book in awhile. So The Dead Cat Tail Assassins has made the list. Oh wait, doesn't Borne count as a murderhobo? Ok well, assassins then.
I'm shocked by the dnf on The Expanse. It's got pretty much all of the good things: complex characters with lots of development, cool world and technology, political intrigue, great atmosphere, awesome fight scenes. I started it in January of this year and I am so HOOKED
If the Magicians Trilogy reminds me of anything it's not Narnia but rather The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant sereies by Stephen R. Donaldson because it has a protagonist who is possibly even more unlikeable being unleashed on a similar fantasy land. I'd be curious to know if you've ever read it? It's definitely one of the most controversial yet impactful fantasy series ever written. I think Salome is pronounced like Sa luh may but I could be wrong. I'm curious to see how they determine what's a "just" assassination in the Dead Cat Tail Assassins. Loved The Expanse tv show but have yet to read any books by James S.A. Corey or any other recent science fiction but maybe it's time to get back into the genre. Always up for a retelling of Mulan but I suspect the romance will ruin it for me as it often does in these types of books.
speaking of sci-fi and first contact... have you tried reading G.S Jennsen's books? the Aurora Rising trilogy (and there is much more). really think you would like this indie author work.
Since you love Naruto recently can I recommend a summer released book Spin of Fate! Daniel Greene recommended it recently though not for the Naruto and anime parts which were his least favorites since he said he doesn’t like Naruto and avatar. He said it’s god for Sanderson fans
