Summer Of Love: The Psychedelic Revolution Of 1967 | Summer Of Love | The American Story 

1967 was a pivotal year for me. Tried marijuana and LSD for the first time and loved it, lost my virginity and also loved it and last but not least, the psychedelic music coming from England and right here in the USA was just the perfect complement to make 1967 memorable. I also turned 18 that summer.

Dad moved us from Sierra Vista Az, pop 4000 to Los Altos Ca in Jan 1966. I was pretty straight. Dan showed me Zappa's "Suzy Cream Cheese" and I said "This was would great if you were drinking....". "you don't get it". But I did "get it" around Jan 1967. "We" were going to Haight by late 66. In August 1967 Jay and I (together today) saw Cream at the Filmore. Saw Hendrix 3x and so on. In Nov 67 I was with Doug on Haight and made arrangements for $600 in pink bayb tabs and some MJ. ... Friend was not bright.....they brought some MJ wrapped in paper. I tried to open the corner. He took it from me. To keep it short, after the cops arrived and left, (the sellers did it, it was part of their cleaver rip off) we put the MJ in the trunk of his moms 1967 Camero with factory Paisley Landua top and drove to Atherton, opened the MJ and of course it was all books. Mostly psychology books. He was ripped off many times. in 1968 3/4 of the class of LAHS class of 68 skipped school and went to the first Sadie Hawkins Day celebration in Golden Gate Park.. A bunch of us saw Allen Ginsburg and smoked with him. in April 68 Dozens of us went to Lime Kiln Ck Big Sur (private property then) and partied hard. Doug (from above) also had a VW transporter, just a cab and flat bed. We rolled two big cigars and filled the cab with a fog of Mexican "trash compactor" weed. (Even the seeds are crushed and sometimes we smoked them!?) I was surprised it took so much smoke to fill the cab. This was 13 yrs before I saw Cheech and Chong do it in their Impala. And I was on Haight in late 68 for the Haight st riots and that was the end of the Haight. Gone by '69. You can find good silent and voice video from Haight era. ..Worth watching. By 1969 we were running the Poppycock and doing the light shows, lived on the 3rd floor, had a hammock about 12ftx18ft that we lounged in.... Ed McClanahan, the writer, lived on the 2nd floor. out light show broke the lightshow "community" to unionize light shows. July ? 1969. That night we did Family Dog on The Beach with Grateful Dead, Beautiful Day and ?. The summer of 69 we also went to LALA land wiht Ron Hiblin, owner of Poppycock. We went to Blue Jay Way (Topnga Canyon?) and smoked Jay's. (Blue Jay Way is a Beatles song) We also moved from Poppycock to Medway Forest, near Skylonda. An Electric Kool Aoid Acid Test House, with some Pranksters still there. I could see why Poncho Pillow was not On The Bus. I could go on and on but not now. my biggest regret is not going to 1967 Monteray Pop Festival.

I was born in '55. I remember some of the clothing, definitely the music it was AM top 40 initially for me. I bought my first 45s in 1967- " Explosion ( in my soul)" by the Soul Survivors in Philadelphia April, 1967, age 11 ( birthday in Dec). I remember my favorite song was " Light my fire," by the Doors 1967...

I was 16 in '67 in Ohio and I asked my parents to let me and my buddy go to SF that summer if we earned $1000 between us to pay our gas and expenses. Gas was like 25¢ a gallon and a motel was $5-6. They said yes and we left when school got out. We felt like the guys on, "Route 66" for 3 months. We were both virgins who had never tried pot or acid. We remedied all of that in Golden Gate Park when we got to SF. That trip changed the entire course of my life. I became a tie-dyed radical hippie. Muhammad Ali has always been my hero. I believe that black and white teenagers came together and got to know each other on the dance floor cause we all liked the same music. It broke down barriers. I remember I asked a black girl if I could touch her Afro cause I had never felt a black person's hair. She said sure and it just felt like hair! I'm 73 now and I have led a very colorful life and I'm grateful for it. I have learned so much! Love is a very powerful emotion and it's the only way to overcome hate.

I was a kid living on the other side of the world, but I felt the good vibrations through the music that came out of the radios. It was enough for me to understand that something good was happening very far away and I connected to it immediately. I felt it before I understood it.

Thank you for bringing me my history. I was born in 1960 to a very musical family. My uncle's were in the music industry. My mom was into Motown, blue eyed soul, musicals and Opera. I remember most of these events. Vietnam was very sad. Many of my friends lost their older brothers, fathers, uncles, etc. My uncles also went, my dad worked on planes, I lived my first 11 years on a base. Sad soldiers who HAD been drafted, were treated unfairly when they got home by civilians. Lulu was wonderful to see again. So much going on in that decade leading to the 70's. Great childhood/early adulthood.

I was also a 60,s kid, born in 1961. Growing up from the 60,s to the 80,s , we had the best music!

I was born in 1957. Although I didn't have the Hippie experience until we were called Freaks in the 70's. Growing up during the 60's formed my political life and along with my family, my morale integrity. I'm proud to be a child of the 60's. Some people say it was a lost generation. Not so.

I was 10 in 1967. Remembering this music brings back so many memories.

To Sir, With Love, is one of my favorite movies. Sidney Poitier was wonderful in that movie, but of course, he was spectacular in all his films 😊!

I was born 1957 so was 10 in 67 I was to young to go to the pubs and and clubs but I remember the music and the colour people walking around without shoes a great source of amusement for me and my mates . GREAT TIMES 🎶🎶

I was born in 1979 but I believe 1967 to be the best year of the 1960's because it had the best music that year and the cars was the best and it being the summer of love the only thing that would of made 1967 any better is that the war would ended and Otis Redding would of not been on the plane that crashed into Lake Monona in Wisconsin

I was only 5 years old in 1967. My first year of school, The year of the Newark NJ riots. I'll never ever forget it. I remember the "Mini Skirts" the music. Little did I realize that was the inspiration to Dance Music and Rave Culture..

I was only 3 in 67'. So 77' and 78' was much more influential in my life. For many different reasons. However, still a pretty cool time to be young!

Everyone still alive does have a piece of info on those days. I have always been outside of the " box " so the idea of expanding your knowledge was a real magnet. If one finds enough knowledge one realizes everything we thought was so important is not. If you look you will find. Don't look and be stagnant . :O)

The first wave of great albums came out in 67 along with the counterculture spreading to every campus. Hippies started moving to the country that fall out of the Bay Area. Things were innocent in 67 where by 70 it was dangerous with Nixon's declaration of war on the Hippies and Radicals.

I would have loved to have been around back in 1867. It must have been fun to have been a hippie.

I feel sorryfor Bridget Bardot's leopard. I'm n😢ot impressed in the least . It should have been living free where it belonged , not on the end of a chain ... It didn't "belong" to anyone . Yet in her adult life she championed animal welfare . Maybe she finally felt guilty about keeping a Leopard as a pet 🤔
