SUMMER OF MESA, the new film by Josh Cox, is about a precocious girl named Lily (Molly Miles) who befriends an enigmatic girl her age named Mesa (Andrea Granera). Through their shared time biking the quaint land and exploring the depths of their true selves, they unearth powerful feelings for each other.

About the film:
The film was shot in 6 days on Cape Cod in June 2019 with a budget of only 400 USD.
Cox (20 years-old) casted from a mix of non-actors and professional actors that he based off conversations, which let him determine if their energy would be a good fit with the rest of the cast - there was no audition.
Much of the dialogue was improvised, which Cox encouraged, for a level of authenticity between the actors who had all just met each other before the shoot.

this touched me in so many ways . i love how spontaneous and beautiful the entire romance was . to meet someone out of the blue . everyone is so consumed by technology that no one meets a potential lover just .. riding on a bike throughout a park or something . it’s so upsetting that it isn’t that way anymore . it made me feel nostalgic for a moment ive never had . i loved this film so much . for the plot and ofc representation . 💗

@@NehaSingh-ty2vk Well there are tons of amazing short films like this one, Dreamcatcher by Pedro Borges, Starburst, Bubblegum, and literally so many more. As for professionally filmed movies with a similar vibe, I'd recommend Lady Bird, Booksmart, and Mid90s! (pretty much most a24 movies)

I am amazed by this!! The acting is so natural especially compared to like mainstream acting like this felt more like real life and is therefore more believable. I loved the scenery and the use of music. It was amazing and I’d love to see more like this in the future!! I can’t believe I got to see this for free that’s amazing!!

Every summer I watch this beautiful movie. And every summer, I am amazed by the power it has to make me feel alive (and gay lol). I love the cinematography, how the camera is just there to show us the precious moments, dialogues, and atmosphere. When I see how the characters are so natural and acting at the rythm of the nature around them, of the music around them, of this love and attraction which were perfectly depicted, I understand that too much technology is killing those moments that we could have. So don't forget to take a break from your phone to really enjoy the nature/people/music/moments/life around you. Thank you for this masterpiece that changed my life

i loved this movie, but I wished we had seen more of their friendships evolve, and then giving us hints that they have feelings for each other. Also if we saw clips of them spending time together we can than think that they have been hanging out a lot and getting feelings for each other. I think it would be better bc I didn’t feel like they had been spending so much time together. It would be a little more romantic if we saw their relationship develop. Anyways the movie was really beautiful🤍

What a lovely story with a different ending.😢 Lily's and Mesa's chemistry works well on screen!❤ Granny Anna is important to the storyline. Brings wice advices to Lily how to go on in (love)life. Ending was😢 but it brings different kind of angle in (lesbian)love movies. How love😢 don't goes in happy road. That love and life is sometimes hard.😢 Good film, all my Lesbian wlw friends... The acting was phenomenal! It was very natural as well as the dialogue. Wish we had gotten to see more of Mesa. I loved the long one shot scenes. Like the one with all three of them conversing after ditching the party. This was a beautiful movie!

Idk why people are so upset about the ending. This is what it’s like to have your first love. For most of us it’s not the last one, or even the best one, but this one hits right in the feels. I haven’t had time to watch this yet but I’m so excited! I loved the short film and have been patiently waiting for this ever since it was announced! The short film has such an incredible feeling to it; it somehow manages to capture the vibrant melancholy summer when I turned 14 and was realizing my queerness through longings in my head and through stories, but also in that beautiful landscape, even though the content is in many ways completely different. I can’t wait to see the feature length- thank you!

At the end Lily forgets about Noah in the kitchen, she cries sitting on the front steps after phone conv. With Mesa. She is lost in the moment. Her heart is still in CC. She mindlessly walks back into the house forgetting to close the screen door. That door is left OPEN: perhaps a foreshadowing....suggesting......there’s more to come

Hey Andrea, #SummerofMesa, & You Tube...Great Job & Thanks! Really enjoyed watching this! Makes me miss the Cape & Provincetown. My job relocated me to Boston from Florida several years ago & I lived in a place called Nahant (it is an island that is shaped like a dolphin off 15 miles north of Logan Airport). Anyway, I lived there for almost 3 years & miss it tremendously. Loved going to the Cape the last weekend of the season to camp with all my women friends. This brought back many fond memories. I also am very impressed of the 6 day time span it took to put this film together & the low budget. Good work!!!

Well done to Josh Cox for producing a great movie on a very small budget. Hopefully you will continue doing great work. The acting by all was really good, a little slow in places, but did have some really “real to life” scenes . The only thing I didn’t like was when Lily was asking Josh to have sex with her then the next minute making out with Mesa. I know this does happen in “real life” but it nearly always ends in heart break. Maybe she could have just chosen Mesa in the first place. without breaking Josh’s heart in the process. I’ve seen this happen for real & it didn’t end well. Hope Josh does continue to crest more LGBT+ movies in the future. Thanks 😊

I loved this! The characters are so raw and real and the acting is at its finest. Well done, everyone! I have a background in short films and like the colours, editing, camera angles. And as LGBTIQ+ myself, I certainly like the story :)
