Summer's Woodland Creations is a film about finding those hidden gems in what is often considered to be the hardest time of year to find images in the outdoors. In the film I am fortunate enough to find three lovely images and each very different from the other.

I take a macro lens on outings always, thanks to you, and that is a large part of my coming home with an image I like. Not all winners, as it were; not many necessarily, but images I'm glad I took. Hi Simon, So wonderful to see you "high in Spirits" again. One way to handle "contrasty" scenes is with (over exposure and under development); I suppose in digital it would be with 2 exposures, one for max shadow detail, and one for max highlight detail,; then combining the two to work with. Used to extreme, a vary flat image, can create a "calming effect". Another, lessor known, my dentist up in Mammoth Lakes, Ca., Reed Thomas, used it extremely well, is a "high key" example. He would use as much exposure as possible, with (FujI) lenses, and leave the highlights up to a point that was just acceptable; it created a bright impressive example of his subject; very "eye catching". Please keep the brilliant images and woodland knowledge coming. Bob.

Thanks Simon for another informative and instructional video, good to have you back. The beautiful chestnut leaf is beautiful in its composition yet, somehow I felt quite depressing. thanks for another lovely film Simon.- your knowledge of and respect for your environment really shine through in all your videos and it's a real treat to watch you going about your mage making. I watched a video on an american channel the other day where the presenter was giving his tips on macro photography. I was astounded that when faced with an untidy background while trying to photograph a butterfly on a flower stem, he cut the stem and removed it and the butterfly from its location to somewhere more aesthetically pleasing to get the image he wanted. I turned off immediately. I have to say that you have inspired me to get out in my local area and just, well, open my eyes. I find I'm enjoying my photography more and not stressing over light, composition, etc like I do on landscape shoots. I'm disabled and have mobility issues so can't get out as often as I'd like and it's a struggle when I do, but now I take a small camera everywhere I go and really enjoy the time out with my dog :-) It helps me get through it, and I get some nice images too, which is a bonus! Thank you :-)
@SimonBoothPhotography
@SimonBoothPhotography 2 года назад
An interesting observation. I have to say, I am familiar with this practice and back in the day I used to do a similar thing. I would wait until the butterfly or dragonfly settled down to roost, at which time they can't fly because it's too cold. I would then move them to a better location to photograph them in a shady spot...but as a thank you, I would put them back in deeper vegetation, somewhere with more cover from predators. It's not something that I do these days but a lot of this goes on in other types of wildlife photography, which is why I moved away from it in the end. It's a good idea to carry a small camera with you. I got a couple of nice ones yesterday morning with my phone.

Thanks for taking us along again Simon. I am interested in your thoughts on the difference in approach that a photographer might take when searching out subjects when utilizing digital versus film cameras. While I nurtured my love for photography primarily in the digital format, I have relatively recently learned of the joy and magic of film. While today’s amazing digital sensors (50MP, 60MP 100MP) allow us to capture incredible detail, further supplemented by the ease at which we can focus stack, blend and stitch images, and presents wonderful opportunities to capture astonishingly beautiful images, many of the techniques do not lend themselves to film photography. Do you feel film photography requires a different approach and if so do you have any suggestions. Thanks again.
@SimonBoothPhotography
@SimonBoothPhotography 2 года назад
Hi Darrell. I used slides for many years so I can understand your thoughts completely. The compositions that I choose are no different today to what they were thirty years ago but yes, I now take advantage of the techniques that you mention. All that I can say is that film is a handicap and there is no getting around it. It's unforgiving and in that sense, it does make you a more considered and competent photographer. One of the advantages for sure!
@darrelltheriault5793
@darrelltheriault5793 2 года назад
Thanks for taking time to reply and for the advice. Interesting that you mention film would be a handicap, in my experience so far, I view it as an opportunity. Certainly it has some limits versus digital but the challenges make capturing an image even more rewarding and it’s always a pleasure to see how different films interpret the image. Thanks again Simon.

Hi John, I actually don't keep notes. I do have a large collection of reference books though. I seem to be able to retain information when I learn something new about nature. Hi Simon, been following you for a year or so now and love your videos and photos. The woods where I live are very busy/chaotic and hard to photograph so your style has definitely peaked my interest and I’m looking at getting a macro lens. I was wondering what magnification your lens is, 1:1 or 2:1? I’ve never used a macro before, I imagine 1:1 would be suitable because I don’t plan to photo insects. Figured I’d see what you use. Thanks!
@SimonBoothPhotography

@ryanmsanderson 2 года назад
@@SimonBoothPhotography Hi Simon, thanks for the reply. Do you ever wish you had more magnification? Or maybe in those situations you use an extension tube. Sorry for asking if you’ve already covered this in a video. Also, if you ever create a book count me in as a buyer! Enjoy the summer!
@SimonBoothPhotography
@SimonBoothPhotography 2 года назад
@@ryanmsanderson thanks Ryan. No, I find 1:1 suits my needs. I have a set of tubes that I can stack on my macro but when it gets this close, seeing a potential image while walking becomes extremely difficult without looking through the viewfinder. I tend to rely on something catching my attention when It comes to photography.
