My favorite dish to take that goes with everything and is super easy is an Orzo Pasta Salad 1 lb cooked orzo 2 small zucchini, diced 1 small red onion 1 colored bell pepper 1 pint grape tomatoes, sliced in half Feta or Mozzarella cheese 1 jar or 1 cup pesto sauce Optional Kalamata Olives Leftover Chicken, or Shrimp to add to turn into a full meal. I serve this as a side dish then add leftover chicken to make an easy lunch. This keeps 3 or 4 days in the refrigerator.
I work at Dollar General, and our boxed mixes are pretty cheap as well.... we also have a dollar section, that is $1.06, not $1.25 like Dollar Tree, just don't want people to forget about Dollar General, there is a whole area dedicated to just groceries, as well as a full refrigerator & freezer section. I like to add sour cream, bacon crumbles & cheese to my potato salad....I do the same too my tuna and chicken pasta salads......so delicious!
When I found Dukes, I tried it, everyone says it’s better. I gave it 3 jars (he won’t use it, only miracle whip for him). I could NOT get used to it. Gave up. Helmans for me. Yeah, we are a 2 jar household!
My grandma added cubes cheese, black olives and green olives to her potato salad. Gave it more flavor and depth. I live a more expensive but you usually have those things in the pantry.
Quick cooking idea for summer best done a cooler day or evening. Buy the chub of 93% hamburger meat. Cut up an onion per pound (how small or what shape is family preference) then using your ground meat separator star tool, yall know the one, cook you hamburger and onions together..i add a bit of water at the first to get it going because its so lean. We also may add standard seasons like garlic and onion powder, soy sauce or worchershire(sp) or even beef base with the water. After you have it all cooked together and cooled portion it out in meal sizes. We do on average 2 cups of mix per container and one larger one with the 2cups plus leftover. You can freeze these or they hold great in the fridge for a couple of days. When you use one throw another in the fridge to thaw. I keep a bowl of it thawed in the fridge all the time for quick meals and snacks. We use it for 'hamburger helper ' type box meals or our homemade versions. We use it for pasta dinners with whatever sauce you like or none at all. We use it for Mexican meals. We use it for beirox bowls or actual beirox. Heated up and used over a baked potato. Mixed in to mashed potatoes for bowls. My youngest will take a few larger spoonfuls and add it to his mac and cheese or ramen noodles. The ideas are endless especially if your house is like ours and ppl eat at different times. Just 2 teenage boys left at home with Dad and I now. Went from 11 of us down to 4...so odd. If you cook it during a cooler time like in the evening while you ate cleaning up after dinner it doesn't heat up the house. It can be heated up for use in the microwave. So you can add it to you crock pot, pressure cooker or steamer....well whatever you use during the summer to not heat the house.
Hello Maria, One type of slaw that I love is grated carrot, mayo, raisins, currants or craisins and crushed or small pieces of canned pineapples (optional). For your potatoes that are smooshie- our family called it "smashed potato salad."
I’m thinking we need a special episode of Dan and Julian doing a show together- Market Basket salsa mild and paprika! Love that they were interjecting their opinions. Some other easy, heat friendly salads: sliced strawberries, sugar snap peas, onion/salt/pepper to taste and dress with a fruity salad dressing (I like raspberry vinaigrette). Diced watermelon, frozen peas, farro/quinoa/barley/brown rice, onion/salt/pepper to taste and raspberries vinaigrette. Blanched asparagus diced, hard boiled eggs diced, crumbled bacon, onion/salt/pepper to taste, mustard vinaigrette. All are easy to make, travel well, hold up in the heat and more importantly very tasty.
What a variety of recipes to choose from, Maria! I’ll be adding one or two of them each week to my menu plan and I’ve got the Summer covered … thanks to you! Thank you for the spectacular content and for keeping it real. I love the background noise and the tiny hands reaching for blackberries as well as making tasty substitutions when you don’t have every single ingredient. You are unflappable! Stay in good health and high spirits until the next video. 😋😋😋
I love 3 bean salad, but it always makes way too much for one person so I learned how to pressure can it and I put it in half pint jars. It is just enough for a side and I always have it on my shelf :)
I like to eat cherry tomatoes alone but I agree w your husband, when added to a salad im not crazy about the texture. Thank you for all of these delicious looking sides. Now I'm ready for my next potluck ❤
It gets so tiresome seeing the same old boring pasta and potato salad over and over again, so seeing all these interesting recipes is so refreshing! Thank you for sharing, I am feeling very inspired😊
Oh yes! A recipe my mom made, mainly in the summer - 3 bean salad. I think her recipe was pretty close to what you put together. It’s too bad you don’t see it too often these days - it’s very good! She also let hers marinate in the refrigerator overnight! Another cold salad she made in summer was cucumbers and onions - the dressing was similar to the bean salad. Fond memories. All usually served with big, ripe tomatoes!
I have a request.. could you do a video on how to build your pantry.. from nothing to full on a budget.. thank you.. what are the staples of a well stocked pantry?
Maria, I learned that about dicing my potatoes too before boing them. It makes perfect sense! Thanks for the video, I will be using some of these recipes!❤
Bean salad is basically pickled and lasts 2 weeks easy in the fridge. Toss into tossed salad as well as a side to chicken and such. We love it especially in the summer
I agree about the cherry tomatoes, although I haven’t had one in many years. I like grape tomatoes better. I’ve never heard anyone else say that either. I just thought it was my weird relationship with tomatoes. As a child I hated them, but I have come to love them. I’m still put off by the texture of some tomatoes, though.
In the west p, where I live, Hellmans mayonnaise is Best Foods. You were searching for the name in a past vlog. I only use Best Foods aka Hellmans as it is the best. I have heard that Dukes is also good.
You make your P Salad same as mine (except) I add (around) a 1/2 tsp celery seed, 2 tsp curry powder, 1 Tbsp sugar the sugar comp's the dill pickles & crumbled bacon for your amount of dressing. Everyone loves it. "Hope you don't mind my suggestion" I'm an OLD (73) Southern bossy mom. Enjoy your cooking and watching your sweet babies giving their thumbs up.
I always hated Mayo. But husbands from SC/GA area and him and his family swears by dukes… his grandma would send it to us 😂 I tasted it and I liked it! Now I swear by dukes! We couldn’t find it here in Texas forever! But after about 10 years we finally started seeing it at certain stores. Now it’s pretty much everywhere after almost 15 years lol
The potato salad looks soo good! I'd use the green onion to add some colour as well also I had a can of carrot and green peas or bean mix and sometimes for the dressing I'd add mustard to the dressing!
All your recipes look delicious!! For potatoe salad I think potatoes taste better cooked with the skins on love that flavor, but each person has there own ways! Going to tru some of your recipes, thanks for sharing 😊
Wow! Those are some great side dishes. I will be set all summer long with these recipes. When I lived in California, I used Best Foods Mayo. Then when I moved to Texas, I couldn't find Best Foods Mayo, so I had to buy Hellmann's Mayo. It tastes just like Best Foods. I have never seen Duke's mayo in Cali or Texas. I bet it tastes the same as the other two. I will be making the Club Sandwich pasta salad first. It looks so good! Love from Texas ❤
No, No..Its totally 2 different companies, two different tastes.. Dukes is Southern with Good Vingar Tang Made right here in Virginia, Hellman's more Eggy.. Made in Europe..
I do appreciate your videos; thank you! 😊However, I do feel like there's too many shortcuts & omissions, to be what the recipe is intended to be? 🤷♀️ I am going to try some of these tho; they look amazing! 😊 Thanks again!
Just a comment Maria. I live in Philadelphia. The cost of a jar of Hellman's mayonnaise is $6+ at the Save-A-Lot. I bought it last month, so hopefully the prices may have gone Dance. Thank you for sharing your recipes!
😮 that's so expensive! It's about a dollar less here in South Georgia. Still a dollar to two more here that 2 years ago. 😔 I hope things get better sooner than later.
Would love for u to make some salads or recipes that use other dressing besides a mayo sour cream or ranch based dressing. I absolutely detest those items so i do miss out on side dishes come summer so if u could make some salads with another type of dressing it would be awesome. Thanks (Basically any kind of white creamy items i can not eat and tbh i dont even allow them in my house, lol)
Dukes and Hellmann's does have a slightly different taste, but I actually prefer Blue Plate 😁 but I don't judge. I will say I don't like Miracle Whip in pasta salad or potato salad...has a metallic aftertaste that I find off putting.
I love your meals especially inexpensive ones, but would you ever considered doing more low carb (not keto)? Due to my health issues, I have to eat low carb and I'd love some ideas from you because my ideas are getting old ;)
Ooohhh you forgot the crispy fried onion! Sorry thats my "salad drug " of choice...well that and real mayo in pasta salads. The real bacon bits are our go to. My husband and i both have gout and #3 is a no meat. So just a tablespoon of the flaky real bacon added to individual serving. Cole slaw mix is a every week staple. Not just for cole slaw but other salads. We "boil/fry " it for beirox, in the bun or just a bowl or for the ramen thats not ramen ...fibro fog sucks. We also just boil it up and season it with that flaky bacon and your seasoning of choice then either add the vinegar base dressing or a mayo based dressing so you can have it cold or warm. Pickles are a given in anything you have vinegar in.
Hellmanns taste nothing like Dukes. I'm a die hard Dukes fan, I won't eat anything else. But it is lots thicker than any other mayor I've ever tried. I will be trying this receive, but will be using Dukes. Thank you for sharing!
I love all the recipes!!! Only the potato's are very expensive her in the Netherlands. 3 kilo for 5 euros. Thats 6.6 pounds for 5,3 dollar. For a potato land thats very expensive.. but i will try al your recipes in the summer! Thank you! 😁❤️
