Jane Hudson, a middle-aged secretary from Ohio, embarks on a long-awaited journey to Venice, fueled by dreams and a modest savings. Upon arrival, she finds solace in the warmth of Signora Fiorini, the kind owner of her boarding house. Yet, amidst the enchanting canals and bustling cafes, Jane's solitude weighs heavily on her. A chance encounter with an Italian stranger at a café leads her to an antique store, where she is captivated by a crimson glass goblet. Little does she know, the man behind the counter, Renato de Rossi, is the same stranger who aided her the night before. As Renato unveils the goblet's history, Jane's heart stumbles, caught between fascination and vulnerability. Despite Renato's charm, Jane grapples with her own insecurities, hesitating to embrace the affection blooming between them. Thus begins a tale of love, longing, and the delicate dance between fear and desire in the labyrinthine streets of Venice.

The word "sin" is derived from an archery term from ancient Greece and means to miss the mark, or target; that moves the connotation from a moral judgement to a matter of realistic, pragmatic, everyday meaning. We all miss the mark, whether deciding where to eat or how to order our private life. This movie was filmed in the 1950s, when standards and mores were beginning to change, to "loosen up", and the plot deals with a woman who has been repressed, but is tentatively discovering a less restricted life. In 2024, we are at the other end of the pendulum swing; we have the dubious benefit of knowing what the freedom of the sexual revolution has led to. Sad, how, no matter what we do, at some point in our lives, we will " miss the mark," frequently.

It was worth watching just for looking at beautiful Venice. But it came with the cost of having to watch the ideas they tried to impose about the supeficios affair that was supposed to be remembered by this lonely woman till the end of her life. And how she was so happy that the Italian fella brought her the farewell flower . So happy that she nearly fell out of the window waving him goodbye.

@kmsongbird
@kmsongbird 2 месяца назад
The character typifies midwestern, Bible-belt puritanical Christian women. I don't mean to sound critical of this type of person; in fact I am one! But unlike the character in this film I'm happily married to my college sweetheart and therefore not lonely; if I were middle aged and single and living in that day and age and on a trip to Venice on my own like that, I'd probably have behaved EXACTLY like this woman!! Which is why I believe millions of American middle aged housewives of the day most likely ate this movie up, and so did millions of American men - it's the fantasy element, the forbidden romance, etc.,
@arthurcwlau9307
@arthurcwlau9307 Месяц назад
@@kmsongbird Your explanation is interesting and eye-opening. From today's viewpoint and I am not from America, it is difficult to comprehend her emotional response in the era of the movie. A spinster traveling alone, looking for what? "Normally", if it were today, she would have asked him to leave Italy with her, or asked him to leave his wife altogether and they go on living there, or if not the above, she would not need to be so sad if it's her plan to leave after all. :)
@kmsongbird
@kmsongbird Месяц назад
@@arthurcwlau9307 this movie really cuts to the deeper truth of the day. It slashes the fantasy with the sword of cold hard truth, at least for this type of person. She knew from the very beginning that her "vacation" was only to be a temporary escape from her reality, and she ultimately chooses reality over fantasy. Who she is, what she believes, is not what this stranger brought out of her. He didn't really love her. He had his own fantasy of being a lover who could bring out the passion in a woman not his wife. He may have done that very same thing with his wife but no longer, and he's addicted to that "power". She was most likely addicted to romance novel imaginings, but they were kept safely compartmentalized where they belonged, but for this one moment, she dared to give them breath... that said, far far away from the realities of home.

Venice hasn't changed at all. It's the best, the most charming and yet assuring thing about this magical town.

We were so very lucky - those of us who traveled before the internet. Before most could afford it & had to save up for it. Sending airmail letters & postcards home. And those grand faux Transatlantic accents! 😂 Love everything about this. Idealized Europe at its most glorious. Was in Paris a few years ago - sadly, that time has passed. Overcrowded, dirty, & cynical. I cherish these films. 💗

I went to Paris in the off season just before the London Olympics and they’d cleaned it up some for the watching of the World Cup. Half of Paris turned out. They were all in cafes so I walked the City. Beautiful. ❤

Film, musica e Rossano Brazzi meravigliosi. Dopo questo film, tutte le americane che venivano a venezia andavano al caffe Florian a far suonare la musica del film...e sognavano un amore come quello di katryn

Hepburn said she contracted a disease of her eyes after falling into the canal, that plagued her for the rest of her life.

To me, it seems what people call "romantic": with beautiful landscapes, music, walks, dance, dresses 👗. Yet, it was really love - confirmed by the ending, and, more than love, it was life. Or, how the menory of a short love story can last for the rest of life
