I'm sure you are all aware of who Brian Blessed is!
Here is something very special -- his attempt to reach the top of the world!
Sadly, I have lost my original digitisation of my VHS recorded copy so I've had to go back and re-digitise the worn cassette tape. The quality is not that great but there is no trace of this on the internet (to my knowledge) and it is watchable, so here it is.
I have seen countless documentaries on Everest and believe this is one of the best that has ever been made.

I had my doubts about Brian Blessed from the beginning, he seemed a complete liability to the team and could cost others their lives. But his charm and charisma absolutely won me over. Every expedition should have a Brian Blessed with them. He's hilarious and ridiculous and profound all at the same time. I love him. He put his big fat love into the expedition and though he smartly turned back, he summited my heart.

I can't help thinking that he could have lost a bit more weight before trying it. Himself of all people with his want for adventure, to want to 'go where Mallory went' and to be 59 which is harder at that age but doable if you pre plan properly which he seems to have not. He must have been one of if not the heaviest people to try it. Every ounce he could have lost should have been lost before he left. At least he made the right decision to turn back.

Yeah nowdays they have to put on some fake drama. Good documentaries document raw, real events. Everything is so scripted anymore its sickening.

Sometimes you just have to know when to stop. That is not cowardice. That is choosing to not put others at risk by becoming a casualty.

it takes more spirit to call it quits knowing your past your capabilities, than endangering a sherpa party, or rescue party, and going up knowing you will be a costly casualty , eating up mass resources on the mountain.. better to give up, and free up rescue personell for people who are caught in weather, or in serious physical distress rather than just being too tired.. A Canadian Nepalese woman marched around Toronto in preparation for a climb, didn't take the climb seriously enough.. she died up there, and almost took three sherpa with her , she was urged to turn around at 2:00 pm, but pressed on despite being ordered to turn back.. selfish .. I think if you decide to go on past 2:00 pm which is the latest time one can summit safely.. one should forfeit rescue..

@@planegaper They not only get "summit fever" up there, but many think since they paid so much to climb, they cannot allow a failure to summit! The other danger is the hypoxia makes you brain-addled and you cannot intelligently make a decision that should be made. So they die, but, sadly, they often take others (like sherpas) or other members of the team, with them! One in seven die on the mountain, mostly because they are inexperienced, not acclimatized, have inferior equipment, and do NOT have the sense to quit before they did!

Dana Davison correction her sister said she was too lazy to walk a few blocks. Her husband is who the real victim in that story was. The Sherpas even told him if she climbed the mountain she would die up there. That whole story is just like what the actual........

I remember watching this when it was shown back in 1990's.. I so wanted things to work out for Brian.. But he's not fit enough..He's still alive today though! Good genes.

He came out on top in my opinion. Challenging himself when they said he couldn't, accepting himself and recognizing the accomplishment for trying his hardest. I really enjoyed this documentary. Thank you for sharing it!

Mr Blessed is indeed blessed. On the other side of Everest the youth and major experience of Scott Fisher and Rob Hall couldn’t save them. 1996 as always Chomolungma decides who makes it up and back down.

@@mercoid I thought I heard that on request of his family his body is removed. Not recovered but probably tossed over some ridge. It is impossible to bury sombody in the death zone.

In 2003, I had just met my husband and after an adventurous summer full of climbing in Scotland, we went to our allotment in the winter, which had a hand-build shed. We had no hot water, very little electricity, just enough for a bit of light at night. It was freezing cold in Berlin but we'd decided to stay in that shed for four weeks, all we had for entertainment was books about this very expedition. By Matt Dickinson, and others, too. We also had cards, and played until our fingers were frozen. But seriously, this expedition, and also the amazing endurance of the sherpas and the charming Brian Blessed, who is a friend of my father-in-law is close to me. I'd never seen the documentary until now, it was the books we read and the story of Rob Hall and Scott Fisher, too. Thank you for uploading, it somehow means a lot. I will never be able to climb Everest and have never been interested in summiting even when climbing in the alps. The summit means little to me, but the local people and the adventurers who do fascinate me. Thank you again! Great documentary.

as heartbreaking as it is to turn away from being so close to the summit, his love and deep respect for the mountain saved him. besides having a wonderful team by his side, it was almost like the mountain itself came alive through him and granted one last opportunity to turn away or to otherwise meet an untimely death. in the end, we’re always at the mercy of nature. whether it’s on land or on mountain, we’re always at its will.

Indeed...believe Mallory himself came to this when they found a letter to his wife stating that he wanted to spend his life with her than die on a mountain (written before his death obviously, but while on Everest). This is more tragic than anything else to me. Insight came too late I guess.

Gerald Berliner You couldn't have stated it better sir! The enormity of it all will most definitely humble the mightiest of souls and can-do types out there... I being first in line... not that I am mighty but one who had a can-do lifelong theme or attitude towards impossibilities like Everest until I saw how huge and desolate a real estate that mountain is in comparison to man.

He (Brian Blessed) was so good in Flash Gordon (Prince Vultan), and again in Much Ado About Nothing (Signore Antonio). He's such a great actor, who did it all. Cudos and massive respect from Montana USA. EDIT: It's interesting to know that the climber now known as "Green Boots" was from India and died in 1996.

Amazing to think that those devastated friends left without someone they knew intimately, by name and as a friend, to become someone known fleetingly, by green boots and as a waypoint. The 8 mentioned included Rob Hall and Scott Fischer. Great climbers and mountaineers Brian would be dead I believe had he gone any further. That Austrian is testament to that I believe.

I would like to see Everest. I’d like to trek in to see it on my own two feet. But I hate the idea of experiencing asphyxia, or of surviving but with serious disability, so I have no desire to summit it whatsoever.

I'm only good at the last two , I am in awe of anyone who climbs , im in love with the Alps , I have skied them 34 of my 44 years . The majesty I feel is indescribable. I would love to see the Himalayas before I die , just once .

I remember watching him in the series, "I Claudius," Patrick Stewart played in it too. He was also a voice in the PBS program, "Pyramid." I'm glad he didn't push it. He is still alive after Everest. That's a good thing. He always was a class act.

Yeah I remember him from I Claudius too. At first I thought he was a liability to the team, but his charm, enthusiasm and charisma made me realize he was a total asset. He was hilarious, ridiculous, profound and ultimately smart enough to turn back. He's a treasure for any expedition.

Maybe being normal weight or very SLIGHTLY chubby, instead of skinny, is an advantage, because of the extreme cold..... but carrying up 30-40 extra pounds does not sound like a good idea.

@@Tina06019like it states in the documentary, the doctors and experts told him a man of his size would find it impossible to climb Everest, and they were right but it didn't stop Mr Blessed making 3 attempts to prove them wrong! Some people think it was his age 59 that held him back but a Japanese man of 83 has since climbed Everest and an 85 year old died a year or two later trying to reclaim the record...

The problem is that there is not clear line that they cross. Every person who attempts this has to ignore and push through their pain. Then added to that is a very real Summit fever. All of these things make it very easy for climbers to push past what they are capable of. It is just so much easier to die up there than it is to climb up or even down.

Absolutely true. Just look at what happened to Scott Fischer and Rob Hall in 1996 even though they were among the most experienced climbers up there.

The Mountain is indeed beautiful, enchanting, a temptress that can kill you with her cold temps, 100+ mph winds, when she decides to burp a bit of snow the avalanche can cover you and you can fall into one of her cracks. But no one can say it isn't a challenge! It is an easy mountain compared to the other 8,000+ meter mountains, far less technically and strategically difficult.. But the draw causes inexperienced people to THINK they can safely climb her and often, they fail. About one in seven die attempting the summit. TODAY, is different. The mountain is way too crowded to safely climb, reach the summit and still make it down. The waits can cause you to lose body heat, use up valuable oxygen, and get too cold. And that is a real shame because it denotes GREED on the part of Nepal, who issues more permits than the mountain can safely hold now.

At 40:46 -- what a mess. Such a shame to leave all that waste on the beautiful Mountain to taint her sides. Discarded tents, clothes, O2 bottles and poop all over to make an ugly mess. The Mountain does NOT deserve that! And the sherpas go up every April to set ropes and ladders and they do clean up the climbers' messes but NOT in the Death Zone -- those just stay. Terrible.

I think his message at the beginning about conformity to standards of society is very true. Nice to see him do something that resonated with him. He just said yes to it. This is crazy hard, I’ve seen other documentaries but this is very raw almost. On another note, I was very pleased to see he was wearing his sunscreen while out and about! 😂

Diandra very true, this was his third and final attempt to reach the top of the world. By the end of it he understood that the summit was beyond him and always would be. Like the doctor said he was an overweight man of 59 so I think reaching the North Cole on Everest is still a legendary achievement! Mr Blessed also said he was glad not to climb higher than his hero, Mallory, but I'm not sure I believe him on that!😊

Diandra oh, always wear sunscreen!😂 I don't need it though, mostly because I never see the sun being from the UK and thanks to my Mediterranean heritage I just go brown in the sun on the odd occasion that it makes an appearance! But saying that we are in the middle of a heatwave in UK!!🤣😁😂

It is brilliant viewing. Some documentaries and films have watered down and glamourised Everest but this shows it at its brutal best. Thoroughly enjoyed it, once again thanks for the upload.

I think if the weather had been with them more of Brian's team would have made it, if not BB himself. However 1996 was a horrendous year for weather and carnage as dramatised so well in the film Everest. Well done Brian (and t'others) for making the right decision to come down and continue making this World a better place for your being in it 👍☺

Where are you finding these gems do you have a time machine or a portal back to the past? I remember reading the book into the death zone by Matt Dickinson the producer of this documentary and I was gutted I could not find the film anywhere. Suddenly it shows up, it's like Christmas for me. First an amazing doc on BASE and now I find a doc I have been longing to see for years. THANKS again, outstanding upload. Docs like these are simply not made anymore and it's sad that so few are ever uploaded.

sixbells99 haha, nothing as elaborate as a time machine mate! I was around and interested in outdoor stuff when these were first broadcast back in the day and recorded them on VHS tape. Later on I transferred them onto DVD and then even later on converted those DVDs into .avi .mpeg etc. I'm glad to share on RU-vid so others can see them!👍😎

This is a classic example of the mountaineers ethos. After you have chosen your climb and your path, THEN choose your companions CAREFULLY. A wrong choice could be your final decision.

The lighter you are; the less mass you have to move up the mountain. I wouldn't want to lug up extra weight.

There were many mistakes made on Everest that year, but allowing her to bring all of that crap and then needing to be short roped up and back took vital resources and people away from where they needed to be just to babysit her. But hey, *she* made it up and back, so it's all good, right?

Don’t put all the eggs in one basket. If your halfway up & it’s been decided to turn back because it’s too dangerous, You must turn back. Ambition can kill you by clouding your judgement. You can return another time to successfully scale it.

I will always believe they did not. Study a picture of what they looked like, the clothes they wore. I don't believe they survived the cold. Consequently Mallory fell and don't know what happened to Irving.

People desperately trying to find a reason so many died in the storm as a way to separate themselves from the possibility of the same fate. "Left too late in the day". "Tried for the summit in a storm". etc. Truth is they did everything any one of those climbers would have done. "Unlucky", like that one guy said. A human must always, it seems, look for a reason. A reason that means they can avoid the same fate. Human nature is funny.

We die on soccer pitches, we die on tennis’s courts, we die lying in bed, we die driving to work, we die going fishing, we die on expeditions to space, we die going to church, we die having dinner with friends. Does it mean we should give up all those things? Yes high altitude mountaineering is dangerous and I wouldn’t try it, but guess what, I ride a motorcycle. We should allow others to live their lives as they see fit. Stretching the boundaries of human endurance and existence has brought many scientific benefits to man and improved many lives. Cheers

No business on dat mountain. Training @ sea level aint gonna cut it. Proud of his inner strength and ambition...disappointed at his mental awareness and selfishness putting entire team at risk. His breathing was heavily labored walking into base camp! #KnowOnesLimits

By the time it was filmed nobody knew actually where Mallory reached exactly, the investigation has been taken few years later... I guess would have been frightened seeing Mallory's corps back then...
