There was very much more to the American Revolutionary War, than is ever shown in movies. 1) Financial: The 7 years war with France had left Britain almost bankrupt. 2) World War: Britain found itself at war not just with the colonies, but also with France, Spain and Holland. All whilst fighting a major conflict in India. A combined Spanish and French fleet attempted to land on England’s South Coast in 1779. The biggest battle of the war was the Spanish attempt to retake Gibraltar in 1780. 3) Trouble at home: The revolution came close to spreading to England. Politician and Soldier Earl Fitzwilliam built a monument overlooking the town of Rotherham called Boston Castle to commemorate the Boston Tea Party. Many soldiers especially here in Yorkshire refused to fight what they saw as fellow Englishmen fighting for English ideals of Goverment. It was this internal threat of revolution that forced the Goverment,s decision, not to send more troops to America.
Yes, but thaht amazing power was enough to send a significant force to the colony, even like washington and their generals with their guerrilla tactics make possible the victory. And also the king wasnt that smart a he is why they to such a difficult situation

This was filmed just a few miles away from my home in Plympton. The battle was shot on the slopes of Dartmoor and what is supposed to be the Delaware river in the background is actually Burrator Reservoir! The troops in this battle were mostly all locals, extras recruited for the film.
@@MegaGator39 It could be! The actual battle was never mentioned in the various local news articles at the time but there was a mention of the reservoir in the background standing in for the Delaware river. Some of the youngsters in the area were employed as Redcoats and they said they expected to be given wooden muskets but instead they were given real ones and taught how to load and fire them in the battle scenes. The scenes right after the battle where the British march into the town was filmed in Kings Lyn in Norfolk with dirt and debris swept over the road kerbs to hide the modern double yellow lines (no parking indicators) If I remember rightly, I think the final scenes on the beach were filmed near Bigbury on the south Devon coast (Burgh Island and its hotel were also used for the Poirot TV series years later "Murder under the sun"!)

If only the Empire’s finances didn’t die in WWI and we stayed super patriotic in keeping red on the map... the iron fist of the Empire would still be feared. We are such a shadow of our former selves.
Then you should have stayed out of it. I am not a nationalist. It's just that many lives would have been spared if not more countries joined in. Or maybe, if our emperor didn't declare war to Serbia for this foolish reason we would still be more than a side note. I never understood how you could condemn thousands of lives just because two were lost. But every empire falls. It was our time back then. Now the power of the US starts to waver. Not for nothing, but the untold number of Scots and Welshmen who have served in His/Her Royal Majesty’s Military in support of the British Empire would rather disagree with your statement...
Very interesting article about the difference between the French and British during Napoleonic wars, the French infantry, large, bearded , long haired and adorned with looted gold jewellery looked Scarey and would advance screaming and shouting and gesticulating at the Brits, however the very fact the Brits stood silent and unmoving nearly always stalled the French from charging into them because this completely un-nerved them, once in range the Brits fired one volley then it was the bayonet a weapon they loved to use and which broke many an attack.
Ally Snackbar The French Armies advanced in the same way, and English/Scots/Welsh/Irish/German (not Prussian until 1813, nor Dutch/Belgian until 1815) Armies beat them back in the same way ....

A highly under-rated film. The way Pacino’s character gets shafted by the new ‘authorities’,shows how nothing changes for the poor sods at the bottom of the pile!
As someone whose ancestors worked for the Imperial Govt., I disagree. India was destroyed through and through by the Empire. Any Indian who has the audacity to even think that the empire "did advancement" deserves to be stripped of his citizenship and made stateless.
The British Empire was one of the most sublime creations in the history of this entire planet. It opened up vast areas of the Earth to trade and commerce. It stopped Indians from burning helpless women, Africans from eating each other, Afghans from shagging their goats and various other bits of rubbish to respect their betters. It brought some of the most backward and remote regions on many continents into the twentieth century as part of a world wide community and bequeathed to many a legacy of democracy and rule of law. It is interesting to see that those ex colonies that have embraced their colonial legacy have thrived and those that have wilfully destroyed it have reverted to primitive despotism and poverty far worse than anything experienced when part of the Empire. Of course, all of the left wing, liberal subversives would have everyone believe different, after all, successful colonialism is not part of their ideological narrative. Tough shit, the facts speak for themselves. Look at India, Canada and Australia then look at Ghana, Burma and Zimbabwe and say that I am wrong.
Many of those colonies in Africa and the Middle East are destabilized because of the British. Many of the countries formed after the fall of the British empire were formed without taking into account the many different native groups within that had a long history of violence and hatred. Although the British did bring modern technology and did make improvements in some of these cultures, they also looked down on other cultures and people in their empire as inferior and treated them as lesser. You are correct in saying the British empire brought some good, however I would hardly call it successful colonialism.
@@MoltenStorm-bw3xx Bollocks. All of those colonies have had independence for over half a century. All that they have done is sink into tribalism and savagery. Many of them are worse off than when they were part of the empire. Mozambique lately applied to join the Commonwealth - so much for the hated colonial legacy.
@@MoltenStorm-bw3xx Many if those border problems were formed because inspite of the efforts of the British, the nationalist tribal minded hotheaded local populations could not come to terms with each other.
Everyone who says that they would rather hide behind a rock and fire that way is speaking about using the high-velocity rifled weapons of today. The Brown Bess that they were using back then could hit SOMEWHERE within a 10 foot circle, at 100 yards. Taking an aimed shot was a waste of time. Volley firing was the only way to inflict damage... they werent aimed shots... they were simply only able to put alot of lead downrange.
I really like the british empire, i like it more than the other ones. But the Navy is much nicer, i think... Sure the british regiments were really good, but ship battles are the best! There is nothing nicer than a british ship of the line, 3rd rate, 74 guns.... I love that sight infinitely... wonderful!

-In the British Empire the sun did not set between 1686 and 1980 (296 years), when the British are in Canada and arrive on the coast of Sumatra (at that time dawn in Sumatra and dusk in Hudson Bay). -In the Portuguese empire the sun did not set between 1729 (when the Portuguese have Timor and reach the center of the Amazon) and 1822, when they lose the empire in Brazil. 97 years. -The sun has not set in the Spanish empire, since 1521 (when Spain arrives in Mexico, and has Italy and the Netherlands, and the Magellan-El Cano expedition, which makes the first round the world, arrives on the island of Guam , in the Pacific Ocean, and the Philippines, that year of 1522). The empire in the five continents is lost in 1898. 377 years.

A daft way to fight a war, having said that, the Empire continued to grow and Britain was the worlds most powerful country right up to 1900. The colonial war created a new country, the USA but it was the French that made the difference to the outcome of that conflict. The colonists lost nearly every battle but the French gift of something like... 77 war-ships and men along with the weeks it took to reinforce British troops due to 3,000- miles of sea and slow sailing ships. The whole thing was rather odd, it was really the British colonists fighting British troops, a sort of civil war.
To be fair before French forces even landed it was mostly just weapons and clothing. A lot of the battles fought in the south the colonies won, up north it was just town flipping until French troops were able to arrive. Also the spy war qas interesting and was decisively Washington's playground
It's not a pike it's a spontoon. Carried by British sergeants during this period. Their main purpose was to hold them horizontal across the body and push into the backs of the troops to help keep their ranks dressed.
Back when Generals sat on high in safety and threw away the lives of us common men in order to increase their power, wealth and influence. Has anything changed?
Yes, back then, generals actually fought in the battlefield. Even leaders did. Napoleon, Alfonso, Fredrick and many others. Now they just sit back while their homes destroy eachother
Yep that we call it the American War of Independence but Yanks call it the American Revolutionary War. It started at Lexington in 1775 and ended with the treaty of Paris in 1783 two years after final battle at Yorktown. The War of 1812 was the last war between us Brits and the Yanks lasted from 1812 till 1815 not long after Battle of Waterloo in Europe. We captured and burned Washington DC & the Presidential Palace, the building was burnt and too greyish so they built it then painted it white to hide the dirty grey. That's why it was famously called the White House. They tried to invade Canada and annex it but the British beaten them out of Canada. Funny that it was filmed here in the UK so not looked like a American landscape for the war in the New World.
@@autowar888 Never heard that before, 40% of the British force at Waterloo were Irish! , 15% of the British Army was always Scottish (even though popn share was half that ). The Scots and Irish seemed to love building the British Empire, there was good money in it after-all.

"Revolution," 1985. Filmed in Kings Lynn. The British won 10 of the 14 pitched battles in the American War of Independence. The rebellious British colonists were helped by the Netherlands and France. Half of all British officers refused to go and serve in the rebellion because they thought a better accommodation could have been found.
@@JordZz1981 That's just an opinion. As a Spaniard i consider the best history is in Spain, China and Egypt(although i like all)... In terms of war it's objective, I don't remember the exact number but vs England and France Spain winned more (VS THEM, NOT in total). British is good with propaganda, that's why a lot of people think that they had a great empire, but if you check history close...well. That empire in my opinion sucks. The british empire always had envy of the spanish empire, they even copy the phrase "sun never sets...", or they accuse Spaniards of slavery and killing, etc; Idk if you heard about the Black Legend, even the battle of trafalgar it's total lose for brits and they say it's a victory XD and they hide numbers of deaths etc (you only have to do a profound search for all this...) They even say they had the longest war (100 years) and in Spain the reconquista vs the moors lasted over 800 years. Like i said, that's the difference between british empire and, for example, spanish empire. Brits exalt their victories, change defeats for victories, change their history, and "claim to be the best", while others respect the truth and are more humble with their actions. Humility, is what the British lack and respect. What do you think of my analysis? Do you consider it correct? ^^
Since there is some much comment on empire and India, you should look up the British population of India in 1921 (approx 120K) versus total population in India (approx. 248M). There is no way the British could have maintained this empire without the active collusion of the native populations. So, all you dork breaths, learn the deceitfulness of the local Indian governments towards their own people, which is common to all governments throughout the world and history.
