The Chinese artists Sun Yuan and Peng Yu participate in the Venice Art Biennale this year with two kinetic artworks. Now, we’ve just realized that we filmed an artwork of them before, and it’s funny that this happened (almost) exactly 10 years ago in June 2009 at Saatchi Gallery in London. The piece is called Old Persons Home, but the association of senile dictators in a nursing home is, of course, purely coincidental.
“Sun Yuan and Peng Yu are two of China’s most controversial artists, renown for working with extreme materials such as human fat tissue, live animals, and baby cadavers to deal with issues of perception, death, and the human condition. In Old Person’s Home Sun & Peng present a shocking scene of an even more grotesque kind. Hilariously wicked, their satirical models of decrepit OAPS look suspiciously familiar to world leaders, long crippled and impotent, left to battle it out in true geriatric style. Placed in electric wheelchairs, the withered, toothless, senile, and drooling, are set on a collision course for harmless ‘skirmish’ as they roll about the gallery at snail’s pace, crashing into each other at random in a grizzly parody of the U.N.dead.” (info text, Saatchi Gallery).
Sun Yuan & Peng Yu: Old Persons Home / Saatchi Gallery London. June 25, 2009.

no matter our political backgrounds, no matter our religion, no matter our wealth or our military rank, we all must succumb to age. we are all the same height hunched over in a wheelchair. we all eat and sleep at the same time in an old persons home. but what you do with your life will determine if there are people who love you enough to spend those final years with you.

Regarding 0:26 and the many comments: This installation does seek interaction, otherwise it would be behind a barrier. It's people's reactions that make it art, whether they're surprised, makes them sad, whether they laugh or take selfies... It's the people who can see themselves here - younger ones with less fear of contact and even a sense of humor, older ones certainly with thoughts of their own future. This extraordinary work of art doesn't demand morally preconceived respect, but is a playground for human emotions, intelligence and (technical) evolution. I love it and my thoughts on it...🎈

I dont think yall realize this is supposed to be slightly comedic, its satirical in that no matter how highly you hold yourself you will still eventually grow old. Read the description

I like how everyone has different interpretations. I don’t see it as “people can have all the power in the world, but eventually they will be old and weak. People are not invincible”. More like global leaders are old men who cause conflict that harms everyone, especially the younger generations. Its these men on wheelchairs telling young men to fight their wars. It’s satirical piece. I think an art museum said it better though they phased it as “the piece serves to critique the futility of global conflicts orchestrated by faltering leadership”

It's interactive art. There is no "right" or "wrong" way to interact with it. If people weren't supposed to touch it, take selfies, mess around etc, they wouldn't be allowed inside the room with it.
