Amazing super hardy, perennial food here. The sunchoke can fill the soil to the point where there is more tuber than soil! We enjoy harvesting in the late winter / very early spring for a delicious root that can be cooked somewhat like potatoes, but transplant and fill new areas with this great plant in the fall and spring.
We believe every homestead should have a few patches of these amazing plants as a food backup that is always available and ever expanding!
www.paypal.me/edibleacres - A simple and direct way to ‘tip’ to help support the time and energy we put into making our videos. Thanks so much!
Edible Acres is a full service permaculture nursery located in the Finger Lakes area of NY state. We grow all layers of perennial food forest systems and provide super hardy, edible, useful, medicinal, easy to propagate, perennial plants for sale locally or for shipping around the country…
www.edibleacres.org/purchase - Your order supports the research and learning we share here on youtube.
We also offer consultation and support in our region or remotely. www.edibleacres.org/services
Happy growing!

I have been seriously prepping for over six years now to include the purchase of a small farm with a garden so we can grow our own food if and when times get tough. Providing enough dependable calories to sustain and thrive is very hard work, even with big equipment and modern methods. Doing so on a small family scale is daunting. I am here in Deep East Texas and have planted over 500 row feet of Sunchokes. They are great producers and a good potato substitute with calorie and nutritional content being similar. The big plus is that you set them once and you are done! No screwing around with seed potatoes, no hilling, no worries about frost or insects and best of all, no digging until you are ready to harvest. Leave them in the ground and your crop gets bigger and better each year. Potato crops can fail - sun chokes are guaranteed food for the hard times to come. Start a small patch so you have seeds / tubers for the future. Best wishes to all.

I plant them anywhere poke weed is growing on my property. It's usually in the places I only brush hog once a year. I don't eat them regularly, but keep them around for food security. Kind of like a natural version of food stockpiling. Great video, and nice tilth in your garden.

We had an "artichoke" patch when I was a kid--dug up in fall, boiled and pickled them in a huge glass jar and ate over the winter! I did not know they were harvestable in spring as well. Apparently pickling them for the winter was customary in the Penna Dutch area.

I feel it is my duty to warn anyone wants to try Sunchokes for the first time: BEWARE!!!! Only eat a few to start out with and see how your stomach takes them. DO NOT eat a large quantity to start out with. Though they are delicious, there's a compound that we have trouble digesting and can cause you to have gas troubles. I found out the hard way the first time I cooked sunchokes why some people call them "Fartichokes" haha I looked it up and I guess it's a common occurrence to the point that some chefs say it's "unethical" to serve to people haha I'd recommend using them sparingly as garnish as opposed to making a dish out of them. Try shaving them thin(-ish) and pickling them for longevity! They're great in salads!

I started my sunchokes with a tuber I bought at the grocery store one autumn . I put one piece in a pot of compost , gave it a good soaking and left it to overwinter in a corner of the garden. Happily the following spring it had spouted . That fall I distributed my bounty to several locations and since then they have found their way across the fence into the neighbors yard.

Yep, give a man (or woman) a sunchoke and they'll eat for life, as long as they really like sunchokes. I mostly value them as something that breaks up the soil over a couple of years, and then I dig them up (which takes a couple of years to get rid of them) and put something else in.

Oh man, you need to let them die back they’ll get like twice as large and much sweeter when the stem by the soil turns brown and dries that’s that’s when it’s best eating this won’t make sense to dig up to ship out but I I think they have more energy if you let them fully ripen. The soil will really mound up like they’ll be pushing their way up through the soil and that’s how you’ll know strongly, recommend letting them fully mature before digging them up. I must have the stampede strain because ours get to be nearly 2 lbs each. Oh my I do love those hens ❤❤

Alas, my last attempt failed miserably - not due to growing conditions but the incessant onslaught of slugs. Not a single plant out of a dozen or more survived planted out, even with slug barriers and cleared ground. Next time I will try in pots until the stems are coarse enough to deter the little buggers, then plant them out.

So only use them in the cold months. This has something to do with the type of sugar they produce. These sugars in the winter will mimic Insulin and will lower your sugar. Great for diabetics. Thank you for the upload sir. P,S leave roots in the ground until your ready to eat them because they want keep very long in the refrigerator. Try eating them row and then cook and compare the taste. Wiped mine out twice, until I took to planting them in tires placed over hardware cloth...and chicken wire over the tops until the new spring growth gets about 6 inches or so--or they dig in from above too. Stack another tire and dirt as they grow...also this made them super easy to harvest and replant. AZ was tough place to grow anything mainly because of the crazy high predation pressures. Here in WI they do fine with literally zero care. Very STUN-method compatible plant. Spread like mad, seem to be allellopathic to some other plants. In future if have bigger yard I will be keeping them away from other food plants, esp not near fruit trees... Tasty sliced and fried in butter, it makes them even sweeter. High in inulin so great for blood sugar, prebiotic. But.. For same reason can make some people very gassy. Make nice seasonal fence, mine get a good 10 feet tall in a dense thicket. They need some space.

Thank you for the video. I have been wanting to get back into growing the choke for some time and since you say you sell them, I went to your site only to find that everything you sell is out of stock. So, I am wondering if I could order this winter to get the items once there are available the next year?

We hope to renew stock for the spring sometime around winter solstice, but you can find other places online in the meantime. Oikos Tree Crops has a wide range of options, that's where we got some great varieties.

Thanks for the info. I'd like to ask you since sunchoke has a few eyes if I divide them and plant, each one of the eyes will generate a new plant? I ask that because I want to propagate them very quick because here in Brazil it's too difficult to find them.

I believe that is possible, but you may only want to experiment with a few in that way to be secure

Thank you for the great video! I love growing Jerusalem artichokes! This year I planted them in a bed with potatoes. Normally I keep covering my potatoes with straw or soil as they grow vertically. Will this harm the Sunchokes? Thank you!

I think if you mulch around the sunchoke stems they should be just fine.

Bless you!!! I got my notice a day or two ago, and I want to make sure this time I plant them better since I screwed up the last time. The chickens don’t kill them??? I was worried about planting mine in the back yard/chicken yard.

vistillia Yet he did fence them from the chickens, remember?

They are growing in the chicken yard, but with some protection from being fully excavated by the chickens before establishment. I would protect them year 1-2

If you are a consumer of sunchokes it is important to not consume continually but take breaks. According from an Edgar Cayce reading.

Thanks for the reminder I need to plant some round sunchokes.. We already have the long tuber ones but my son got me round ones from work... I was so happy the round ones can get bigger.... Can we plant them in the same area or will one take over the other kind?? I don't really have another area I want them growing since I have several places where they spread already but if they will choke each other out I will find a new spot...

You can try them in the same spot but probably better to spread them out

Hi there - a little question: I'm purchasing some sunchokes from someone in my area for the first time. The Copperfield variety. It may be a week before I can get them in the ground after they arrive by mail. Is it possible to plant them in a pot and then transfer them into the ground a few weeks later safely? Also, are you shipping any sunchokes right now?

I love your life man that's it's really good that's what I like doing no matter where I would live north or south and doesn't matter I would do that what you're doing... I think it's the answer to feeding people that people wouldn't starve but I think we have an epidemic in this country with drugs and things like that or people are not eating what they're supposed to be eating or eating things that have preservatives in it and that's what's killing it so you basically... no one should have to starve because there's a solution... I think every person in the United States should have a garden in there where they live some sort of small herbal garden at least that...

I have been thinking about getting some since I first read about and seen them on your channel. Do you have orders for the spring or just the fall? It is late for planting here in MN, but I am hoping to do some more stuff this coming spring. It has been a crazy fall weather wise and busy. Thanks!

Hoping for spring but we may take spring off 2020 and focus locally. Next fall for sure!

I will keep a watch out then. I might look around and see if there are a few in my neck of the woods I can wild harvest until next fall. :)

We take what we need and what we plan to sell and then leave the rest. Sometimes we replant in new areas.

You can find them online if you wanted. Oikos Tree Crops has them as well as others. We'll renew stock for next year for sure.
