Everyone is thinking that this new boat is not a jump forward in concept, always asking about being “aggressive enough“ in the design. But if you look at the detail in this design, it’s pretty amazing. I honestly think they have refined areas in the previous design that were overlooked, like the shape of the deck channel being quite sharp previously, and now being more subtle and aerodynamic, I think the airflow both over the hull and around the sails near the deck has been a real focus of this design. They do not intend on being off the foils in my opinion, so slippery through the air is priority number one. Plus the main sail control system is pretty epic. Rest assured there will be a laundry list of revolutionary items that we can’t and probably never will see.
All the teams are assuming they’ll fall off the foils. That’s why they have that extra long sharp keel. Conditions in Barcelona are light and high wash. The sharp keel helps with righting moment during take off
It probably has the speed, but the fact that the AC doesn't have to contend with waves is HUGE. The people in the chase boat would be turned to gazpacho if they tried to power through the waves at-speed.
Dan Bernasconi has got to down in history as the greatest America's cup designer ever. I'm not forgetting the past great like Ben Lexcen and all those j boats designers, they are all fantastic. But just look at what Dan has done. He made the AC72 flies when it wasn't supposed to, the rules were written to prevent the from foiling but Dan and his team made it work. The only mistake was showing the world that they can do it in December, should have waited till Feb when it was too late for the other to copy. The cylors on the AC50 was a genius move. But the real secret to that boat was the control system. Another genius move. And then the introduction of the AC75, the class that he invented. Absolute beast. Best America's cup class ever.
I think the sailors want to win on sailing skill, rather than pulling off secret squirrel coups. Dalton's presumably another story! I get the feeling the SailGP guys wish the Aussies had not been penalised so hard (and, arguably, unfairly) - they would much prefer to win on the water.
Amazing! You get a real sense of the speed they travel at. Who would have thought a wind powered boat could ever get these kinds of speeds in such comparatively low wind.
@@mitchand9 100% agree. Patriot was a seriously fast yacht and beat Te Retuhai the first time they raced. It will be interesting how the Americans go this time with Tom Slingsby at the helm
Just a reminder that NZ came up with design for the AC which at the time some pundits thought it was not feasible. By far the best and most exciting design ever in the Americas Cup. Go ETNZ !! exciting times.
They're getting used to these craft. Amazing speed. Amazing feat to get rigs that big up onto a foil, but still; light years away from every day sailing.
@@Team33Team33 Your comment reminds me of that guy from the Sailing Illustrated channel who keeps saying the word "unrelatable" over and over. Yeah, it's not supposed to be!
@@daviddickinson6346 We know they will have designed a fast boat, so the real question is how well they can control it. And it's looking right on the money in the first couple of days. If you think of all the dramas they had with the controls last time around this is worryingly impressive. Still, as you say we'll have to see how the others are going before we get too resigned to more Kiwi dominance.
@@tullochgorum6323 Actually, the real question is how fast the other teams can push their boats. I think NZ has a good handle of their boat already from the looks of it. The other teams are the question mark in my opinion. Their boats are totally new whereas this one is a refined _Te Rehutai_ which it's based on.
I wonder if they thought of shark skin on the foil. The skin of a shark is super hydrodynamic. It has millions of denticles, which are fine hair like structures. They move as the shark moves through the water. It would make the foil super slippery.
@@jamesaron1967 No, this guy is a photographer, who doesn't pretend to know much about sailing, and even that might be an understatement. By his own admission, he's all about the clicks...
Can someone educate me regarding the height it’s travelling above the water. Seems to be much lower than last year. I’m guessing if like a racing car (F1) then that closeness generates greater speed?
Thanks Bernasconi telling that all 3 teams was going trough same questions.... Luna Rossa boat its still they design with some difference from another implanted or new chef designers... Same like kiwis its taken some new differently.... about alinghi all thinking its radical about most seen boards where cutted straight off?
Show me the boats, not people talking. I could watch these sailing machines all day long. Nearly half of this vid is people talking and no boats... thank God I have the fast forward. I can't stop grinning when I see these boats sailing, blows me away.
Honestly, they should just do away with mark roundings and just have a point to point (drag) race. It's all about foil time and boat speed and they all look like they are going upwind 100% of the time (which they are) so why even bother with the marks at this point? Just set a start and finish line with a one minute pre-start and have them drag race to a distant spot.
A couple of years back someone on another sailing channel suggested a course similar to what you see in a car race. The courses they sail these boats on now are not the right design in my opinion.
Damn, this looks fast. I guess pretty soon more development will be needed for the chase boats, to keep up with the sailing boats, especially on waves.
Well He has devoted the last 3=4 years to designing a new Americas Boat yacht and I presume seeing it launched and performing gives him tremendous pride on what he has achieved (and thats so far?? what more is to come ) Surely there will be a point of time that Improvement ceases...what then ...Another concept...??
I thought that the CTO did not appear to be all that confident; rather non-comital about progress especially when the oppo boats were mentioned. Good luck Team NZ.
Because they travel faster than the wind going downwind, they’re effectively catching and passing the wind, the apparent wind will still be over 30 knots so they’re sheeted on and sailing to angles to suit a target VMG. It’s why they don’t need spinnakers like keel boats, if you flew a kite the limit is pretty much the wind speed downwind, these machines are a different league speed wise.
The speed these boats move at is insane...powerboats have to go almost all out just to keep up. I notice these are not flying wing designs like the boats had in the last cup. So no bicyclists pedaling to keep hydraulic fluid moving ?
