Sunken narrowboat, caught in a lock and no moorings (unbelievable last day on the River Avon)

We find a sunken narrowboat on the River Avon. Legend has it it is not a recent sinking, though it is never a pleasant thing to see a sunken boat. We also get caught in Nafford lock. It's a tricky lock anyway with a right angle turn into the lock landing area, but once in the lock we get caught on something.

I am binge watching all seasons and have made it to your trip to a Bumble Hole Festival. I am still in quarantine with my daughter because she has special needs and is high risk health wise. So I have been enjoying your vlogs so very much. Thank you for helping me navigate through this stressful time in our lives❤️. You two beautiful souls are a blessing and so much fun.

Over the past couple of months I've been watching Cruising the Cut with my breakfast each day, which I love to bits and it was through that that I found The Narrow Boat Experience. David is like the Enid Blyton of boating. The sun is always shining and if not time is past with a cup of tea and a cheese sandwich. Nothing wrong with that at all but I just loved that your vlog started slightly chaotically and with wind and rain. It made me smile. It is the weather that I endured yesterday whilst out canoeing and will again today on my bicycle. Glad you survived okay. The sunken boat is a salutory lesson to us all (the wind caught me out a couple of times yesterday) made even more poignant by the fact that you said the owners had only had it for a week.

It’s probably not a ton of fun being underway while it’s raining, but I really appreciate it. It was genuinely lovely to watch.

Ello Loves, I bot a 24 foot sail boat, and my 1rst "real" sail was from Oceanside California to Mission Bay, California, USA .At night, about 40 miles) And you made me laugh when you said "Boats Don't Have Brakes" I learned this as I pulled into the slip at the Marina. I put it in reverse, nothing happened. So back into neutral, then again to Reverse. This was about 11:30 at night, and all we heard were the laughs of the drunken boaters that watched us Panic. That was 40 years ago ............. I'm still here, Thankyou God ! Love your videos !

Good to see you showing the cats who's boss on the river. Just shows that locks are fine most of the time but it only takes a random event to remember how risky they can be. I once had a memorable event with paddles left open at both ends of the lock and crew nowhere to be seen chatting to other boaters. All adds to the 'experience'

@@TheNarrowboatExperience . Did that one night at Shepperton lock on the Thames. Going up with other boat, we were waiting for the lock to fill up, it had about 4 inches to go but seemed to be a long time filling up completely. There were some people at the bottom gates and we heard someone say, is water supposed to be coming out? That was when we realised we hadn't shut the paddles right down. The silly thing was, the chap had been telling me how he had seen a police boat do the same thing. :-)

Just put a dab of toothpaste on the stain and using a sponge or piece of cloth, gently rub the stain. If badly stained, you may have to repeat procedure. The cup comes out clean again! Hope this helps your. PS I also have two cats. 😻😻

my cat, I cant let loose unsupervised, she needs to be on a leash, close to 3 years ago she slipped out, once she is outside she refuses to mind us, the she chased a squirrel up a tree, and was afraid to come down, she spent 1 night up the tree screaming, I had to call a friend the next day that brought a 40 foot ladder, that was still not tall enough but he was able to climb another 10+ feet to get her to rescue her. even when supervised outings she has no common sense, but I have had her a decade now, & she is always been inside car, was a rescue cat about 1 year old when I got her. but inside besides clawing 1 door frame, grrrr she has been a great cat. Thanks to your videos, my wiife does want us to go to travel there, & more than likely retire there. keep up the great videos!

Second thought...with all the tiny markers, why don’t you invest in a pair of binoculars? We’d be lost without ours. With the nice flat water you cruise, you don’t even need expensive marine stabilized ones, just an ordinary birdwatchers’ model would do fine.

I lived 2 weeks on a narrow boat with a friend . Well it was a holiday. ... And let me tell you ...everyone who had a boat all treated me like i was a member of their family . It was so humbling.. it was beautiful .... I was in my mid 20,s and i lived in W.Yorks at the time . ....i was just blown away on how nice evry1 was to me ......it was like i was on another planet with people off the grid. It was my 1st time seeing what its like out of the dirty rat race . My fried sold his house and bought a narrow boat .....and i could see why ...even though i didnt want him to leave his house....

I once had a scare in a double lock (Meadow Lane, Nottingham). I had entered the lock to go down onto The Trent. I closed the top gates and assumed it would be safe to leave the boat to dispose of my refuse. All paddles were down. 2 minutes later I returned to find that the lock had started to drain through leaky tail gates and the boat had drifted diagonally and the rubbing strake on the bow had hung up on the edge of the lock and the stern was well down on the water. I'm not sure if it would have sunk but a hard shove pushed it down into the water with a splash! Now I don't leave a boat unattended in any lock.

I think it's used for moving canoes to and from the river. Looking on Google maps, it leads to the road where Pershore Leisure Centre is goo.gl/maps/bFgEQEFnRycngY2v7

@spencerwilton5831 4 года назад
ghost307 Photos and comments online show and describe it as a drainage channel. The "tracks" appear to be concrete, just a few inches high. I'm not sure, but I suspect their function is to confine water to the centre channel under low flow conditions, to keep it moving in much the same way a sewer has a narrow base channel. At times of higher flow the water can spill over to the outside channels too?

I thought it was a means to bring some heavy product in small rail carts to load onto barges: something like grain, ore, coal etc.

Drainage channel from adjacent land possibly. Rails possibly allow device to run along the channel to clear debris. Just my guess.

We did that same trip last year, and it rained right through that section for us as well! I think I read that it would cost a huge amount of cash to remove the sunken boat. The week after we went through Tewkesbury it was badly flooded. Which was scary to see on tv!

the Avon is very beautiful, but opportunities for overnight mooring are very limited. In 2021 we were cruising the Avon and unfortunately one particular individual made it very plain that he did not want us breasting up to his boat to share "his" mooring. Fortunately the kind people at the next mooring a few miles downstream allowed us to share their mooring. The canals are a reflection of life in general most people are super kind, but there are a few who think that they know it all and are above the rest of us.

"What else ar we leaving to do, sit around and play with the cats?" Well that sounds like a lovely way to spend a rainy afternoon to me. A friend of mine, a man of few words, once wrote a four word poem that went like this. "Cats, no bad ones". Looking at yours, I am inclined to agree. Thanks for another lovely video. Cheers. right
