The whole Diary album is this good, or very close to it. An absolute classic from a great time period in music.

This band defined my 20's. Im 52 now and still can't sit still while listening to Sunny Day.

Just wow. I haven't heard this track in many years, but by the time the vocals kicked in, I was back in 1998, chilling on my futon and passing a joint with my brothers in the room we shared. I was working at Tower Records, and everything seemed good and full of promise. Goddam time passage is relentless.

I just texted this to the lead singer and the drummer haha. I've done web work for them and their members even to this day. Also, in regards to your question "what is emo?" that's a simple question with a complicated answer. What you need to understand about it is that there were various waves of emo. It's easy to think about it similar to the metal genre. In the 70s and 80s you had your heavy metal pioneers like Black Sabbath, Zeppelin, etc. You can think of 90s post-hardcore bands like Sunny Day, Texas is the Reason, and tangentially Hum in that era of emo. Sometime in the early to mid 2000's the music industry caught wind of it's rising popularity and you got a sort of post commercial flavor of "Emo" that was much more glam, similar to how hair metal was born with LA bands like with Poison and LA Guns. This is how pop-punk bands of the mid 2000's are under the umbrella term "Emo". Some bands were even able to successfully cross from one wave to the next like Jimmy Eat World did. Just like "Metal", "Emo" is an umbrella term for many different styles. This is partly due to commercialization turning the term "Emo" into a marketing buzzword. The result is gatekeepers on both sides endlessly debating what "real Emo" is to this day. Hope that helps.

Geebz, if you decide to do another Sunny Day song, check out Pillars. It came out about 4 years about In Circles and has a very different vibe, but I think you'd appreciate it. More great bass work and cool, layered guitar work.

The album that made me want to be a musician. Willam Goldsmith on those drums man, changed my life. And yeah, we just called this indie/alternative in 1994. It wasn't til I got to college a few years later that I heard someone refer to them as 'emo'. edit: I'd also highly suggest checking out at least the first solo record from the singer Jeremy Enigk, whole different vibe.

LP2 and How It Feels to be Something On are both really good as well. I feel like LP2 is a lot more prog inspired and How It Feels to be Something On is a bit more expiremental. Both are equally as good (if not better) than Diary. Hope you have a good time listening to their discography!

Sunny Day Real Estate is so good. How It Feels To Be Something On is my favorite album of theirs followed by Rising Tide. Love to see anyone discovering these guys.

SDRE definitely pre-dates Radiohead. When SDRE exploded on the scene, NO ONE said they were emo. Interesting how the label was foisted upon them.

Glad to see you finally got to this one. Emo’s a tricky genre because it’s been around so long and has been adopted by many disparate scenes. In my mind, emo is a subcategory of post-hardcore, but some bands swing a little closer to indie rock and alternative, some swing closer to harsh grind and hardcore punk, and by the end of the 90s it became associated with a type of moody pop-punk. Here’s a list of songs your journey could take you that would encompass all of the above listed styles. Seeing these guys live several times back when this came out was amazing. The dynamic changes from the soft to the loud portions was so amazing and like an explosion of sound.

The engineering is great because its Brad Wood. You should do a video on either Faces in Disguise or The Ocean. Both are excellent songs from Sunny Day.

This band, this album, has always found a way to be rediscovered at so many important parts of my life. Give Seven, and Grendel a listen while you are hanging onto the Diary.

The variety you go through on this channel is excellent. Love this band. Recommend the band ‘Nothing’ if you have a chance. Not 90s but definitely have that droney shoe gaze feel.

Emo began as a form of "emotional hardcore", that is underground punk with a very open display of emotions and a rejection of the widespread though guy image of punk rock. It has a first wave of bands like Fugazi or Rites Of Spring and then it started ti diversify: some bands adopted harsh vocals and more metal/jazz musical complexity and intensity and they gave birth to Screamo (Scream and Emo), While others (like Sunny Day Real Estate) began to sound more delicate and atmospheric but retainig some punk elements. This was the so called second wave. The third wave started in the early 2000s and combined elements of harsh music with very pop song structures and adolescents-related lyrics and themes. Most people think of this third wave when they say Emo, since it was the most famous and controversial.

This album changed my whole outlook on music, and completely changed the way I played the drums. William Goldsmith is such a talented, and underrated drummer.

Love this one. An awesome example of how to conjure up atmosphere while retaining that signature early to mid-90s emo rawness. Also a fantastic way to make a chorus’ repetition work for it and not against. Great pick, man. I’d also like to recommend Brand New of a similar vein, especially their track Limousine.

Check out their song "Round" it's another hook bomb The bassist and drummer went on to join foo fighters. the drummer was later fired/quit and replaced by Taylor Hawkins.

To me, Sunny Day and Far are true Emo.

I love this song, and have since I first heard it around age 11 or 12. There is something about the layers, the arrangements, the oppressive, driving guitar tone, this song has always made me feel this intense melancholy but like, in a good way

Great band that doesn't get a lot of "street cred" because their career was/is relatively short... All their material is amazing, but for my money, "How It Feels To Be Something On" (I believe their 3rd LP, I'm sure someone will correct me) is the greatest rock album of the 90s... Bold statement, I know, but IMHO, it is the best of that decade.

Ok, I could not pass this by without commenting. Brings me back to my skateboarding days. Your one cool dude for reviewing this one. Love Sunny Day, while you're in the mood, I would recommend checking out Seaweed next, anything from their Despised or Weak albums, 91 and 92. Keep it up!

Personally I prefer the album How It Feels To Be Something On over Diary. That one is on a whole other level. But a good suggestion as well: Jeremy Enigk's solo record Ghost from 2017. He matured well as singer and as songwriter and that record has exceptional depth and beauty. One of my favourite albums of the last few years.

I have posted on a couple of your videos that you should do any song from the album “return of the frog queen” which is Jeremy enigk’s first solo album. I have tried to shoehorn that recommendation into the comments on a couple of your videos. But this time it actually makes sense! You must listen to return of the frog queen. It is a perfect album. And I just know you will love it cuz of all the orchestration. So many layers of melody. And his voice is so powerful.
