This weekend we begin our Pchum Ben celebrations with the kids and our extended Sunrise family. Pchum Ben is a time to respect those who have passed. Every year we remember our Sunrise kids who are no longer with us and all the loved ones we have lost. Read on below to find out more about this Cambodian festival and stay tuned for photos and updates of our activities over the holiday period. But first, a very special thanks to our generous donors who have made this year's trips and treats for the kids possible. If you'd like to support an activity for the kids during any of our holidays, please message us.
ABOUT PCHUM BEN:
“Pchum,” means “to gather together,” and “Ben,” represents a “ball of food”, which is offered to ancestors throughout this period. This celebration lasts for a full 15 days and stands as a tribute to ancestors reaching as far back as seven generations. Today is already day 3, so Cambodian families, including ours here at Sunrise, are already joining together to make rice cakes, drinks and desserts, offering some to the monks at the Pagoda on behalf of the loved ones we have lost.
This timeless festival imparts valuable lessons to the younger generation on the importance of showing respect to their relatives, not just during Pchum Ben but all year round. Pchum Ben is more than just a festival; It’s a heartfelt tradition that underscores the enduring importance of family, gratitude, and respect in Cambodian culture. So, if you’re ever in Cambodia during this special time, make sure to join us in the festivities and discover the beauty of Pchum Ben for yourself.
