Well, sun (!) of a gun. I wear SPF 50 every day, but I rarely reapply and thought the lack of redness meant my sunscreen had protected me from skin damage. You very clearly explained how wrong I was. I've been enjoying your videos for a couple of months and thought "reapply-30" was a little overboard, but this video finally made me understand why I need to be reapplying sunscreen. You definitely just made a difference in my sunscreen habits. Thank you!
THANK YOU SO MUCH for the whole series Andrea, I am sharing with family and friends, it is still so hard to truly change behaviours and educate ourselves in this area!
omg i've been layering a moisturiser with spf followed by my sunscreen for years and never knew that i should check this!! and i thought i was being so good doubling up on my sun protection :(
Would love it if you addressed the issue of dentured alcohol in face sunscreen in a Q and A. All my favourites contain it high on the ingredients list, and everything I read says its the worst thing to put on my face in terms of aging. While I have no issue with getting older, I don't want to use products that are actively aging my skin and would love your balanced advice. I love your sense of humour and look forward to your posts every day.
Rhona Reason ignore that please! There is NO evidence to support that denatured alcohol is "bad" and in fact it is needed for the sunscreen filters to work properly
Thank you so much. It's so difficult to sort fact from fiction without getting lost in all the bogus science out there. You are owing such a great job in keeping it real and keeping us informed. Thanks again.
Thanx for understanding doctor. I would have even lived in a basement. As i hardly leave my room because of acne. (But I have started following your advices)..🤞 But I have anxiety issues😑😞
Happy Friday, Dr. Dray! I've really appreciated this series, and (thanks to your recommendations!) have finally found a couple of sunscreens that I can comfortably wear with or without makeup. Love the Cerave one, as well as the Neutrogena clear skin. I'm getting ready to try the Australian Gold 50 Tinted one that many others have praised. BTW, for others like me who have not been able to find the AG 50 tinted anywhere, I found it at CVS yesterday quite by accident, I was looking for something else, and spotted it on the bottom shelf with face moisturizers (not with sunscreens). Have a great weekend!
Excellent video! Thanks for the info on sunscreen ingredients that react with each other! My family (most fair skin, me no tan, just burn) went on vaca and I had packed such a "mambo/combo" it was funny to everyone! Thanks to you. (I've never thought of buying the stick sunscreen, but it worked great for hair parts, ears & bald heads!) I came at them with sunscreen, hats, towels, coolibar game strong! , No one got sun burned. They all groaned when they saw me coming with the sunscreen to reapply, or get them before they left (20 minutes) haha Even the little ones knew to present themselves to reapply! Hopefully they will have less sun damage to their skin than my generation! Thanks for everything! Vicki
Another informative video! I use the Obagi hybrid 50 spf, containing zinc oxide 10.5 % and octinoxate 7.5 %. Because of my crazy schedule in the morning, I am not always able to wait 20 minutes before leaving the house after applying the sunscreen. Does the zinc oxide in the formulation offer me some protection immediately? Thanks so much Doctor.
Hi Dr. Dray, I wanted to ask you your opinion on the SkinMedica Total Defense + Repair SPF 50+ . It's supposed to also protect against infrared rays, but it's not just a physical sunscreen and a bit pricey. It " sounds" really good though. Thanks
It is a combination sunscreen with iron oxide...so some protection into visible light...but not really offering much other than what is in other tinted sunscreens. It does have niacinamide which can help with redness and impart a skin brightening effect...but as far as sun/uv/ir protection...not anything other than the usual tinted sunscreen
Can anyone answer me, I wanna know about cerave "AM moisturizing lotion broad spectrum spf 30" . Is it any difference between other product which is "spf 30+ pa+++ uva/uvb" ?
Hi Dr. Dray, I love your videos! I was wondering if spf in spray was useful at all, could you tell us your opinions on the Lumasol's Post-Makeup SPF 50 Mist, is the one Kim Kardashian promoted on her social media.
One more thing....what do you think of the Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisturizer with sunscreen SPF 50+. I am using it with the tinted EltaMD. It is chemical and physical both. I like it a lot, because it works well with my IT CC cream. Sorry to be so long winded!
Hi Dr. Dray, I have been learning so much from your channel and have made some changes on how I put on products on as you have show in your videos. Thank you!! One of my issues is the heavy feeling of sunscreens on my face. I have been using a physical as the chemicals cause itching. I am currently trying the Cerave Zinc one. There is a point in the day though that I cannot wait to wash my face. Can you suggest another one to try? Also I ordered the Elta MD tinted one to try :) loving your videos! Your Mom is so adorable.
i always learn so much ! ok my question is i got the differin moisturizer today and the cleanser,my skin has been so parched an i read on these products for use with differin gel well i dont use the differin gel but i do use retin a so i thought hey maybe this will hydrate my face too..do you think this was a good choice? i noticed you like the moisturizer. ive been using cerave foaming cleanser i think thats what is drying my face out so bad.
I love the differin moisturizer...it is essentially identical to the the neutrogena oil free one i have used...cerave pM has niacinamide and ceramdies, that can give you a little more bang for your moisturizing buck; foam cleansers can be drying..maybe try a creamy-fragrance free cleanser
ok thanks !i did pick up the differin cleanser as well its says balancing cleanser and its creamy with no fragrance thought i would give it a whirl...do you think it will be ok? is it like your neautrogena hydrating cleanser at all?
This series has been immensely helpful! Thank you! I am now however slightly freaking out that my perfect SPF routine that I has taken me a long time to find and finally become compliant with every single day is not as good as I thought.... I layer a tinted physical BB cream (zinc and titanium) over my cetaphil oil control spf 30 (chemical including avobenzone) my super oily acne prone skin prefers chemical spf but I know it’s not good enough on its own so I add the tinted physical on top. Other than switching to a fully physical SPF is there another type of chemical filter that protects from UVA but doesn’t react that way with the physical/mineral spf? 😩
Hi Dr Dray. Can you take a look at the Drunk Elephant Umbra tinte Daily defense spf 30 and tell me your thoughts on the ingredients compared to the Elta tinted sunscreen, pretty please.
Doesn't offer anything and I can't justify the price of this skin care line to folks. Elta is a pricier sunscreen that i like...but it too doesn't offer anything spectacular over any other sunscreen (as far as skin health). The key is to find a sunscreen that you like and you feel comfortable using consistently. If it is a pricier one, then it is worth it.
Good Morning Dr Dray, I'm learning so much from your videos, thank you! I'm wondering about alcohol, as an ingredient, in lotions. I see a variety of types and I wonder about that. I've heard that certain types are ok, I have no idea what to think about this or if I should try to avoid this ingredient because it is drying. It seems to be in everthing though. Can you comment at some point about alcohol in skin care please.
So if the spf number only applies to the UVB protection, how do we know if we have enough coverage for UVA wavelengths? The mineral sunscreen casts don't look great or work well under makeup so I'm still desperately searching for anti-aging UVA sunscreen.
Lots of very useful information. Thank you. However no mention of nano technology used in combination sunscreens as I'd hoped. Never mind I'll look elsewhere.
thank you for the video! you've probably mentioned this in one of your videos that I've must have forgotten, but I wonder if a physical sunscreen containing titanium dioxide can be put on before makeup and provide protection when the makeup is put on on top of the sunscreen? thank you!
If I were to have an spf of 100 and didn't put an entire 5 ML on my face to get the 100 spf but did 2.5ML on my face would that give me an spf of 50 and would that be a benefit of a spf over 50 (that you could apply less than. The recommended dose and still have a high spf)?
Dr Dray I carry my sunscreen everywhere with me, in my bag, that sometimes gets exposed to the sun and I can't avoid it /: other times is in a hot place, then when I reapply the sunscreen is really warm. Is there a problem with that? What should I do?
Im confused as what to spf to use I have dark skin.. oily and acne prone with scarring and hyperpigmentation I currently use garnier dry mist... but its a spray... but like you say its not reliable... but... i have used la roshe posay XL but it broke me out ... alot of spfs makes me oilier or spotty... what would you recommend i do...
Hello dr dray, im from malaysia where its extremely humid and hot. By 10am and 11am, u start sweating if u were to step out of an air conditioned room. Would you mind answering a few questions of mine? 1. I usually wash my face at least twice between my 8am-5pm workday. Do i need to reapply moisturizer n sunscreen again after each wash? 2. Im of the acne prone oily skin type and im darkskinned as im of indian origin. Im currently using the bioessence miracle biowater sunscreen as it blends well.. what are ur thoughts on that? Or could u recommend a better sunscreen? 3. Also, i noticed u tend to wear a physical sunscreen n top it off with a tinted sunscreen. Can u also recommed sunscreen that can suit my skin type and colour? p/s ive just started using adapalene daily as recommended by my derm but he has been vague about my skin care aspect.. Thanks soo much..
i found a channel where this youtuber Genevieve does sunscreen Sunday and i thought it would be awesome if you did something similar. She reviews a new sunscreen every sunday and usually she tries to keep the reviews short and simple. from listing spf, cost, if its mineral or chemical and so on. I figured you have an arsenal of sunscreens and i would love to see more youtubers do these quick reviews in order to make sun safety a more normalized part of skincare. ru-vid.com/group/PLhEDsaVBNvL-cE_N4n04hfOuBK5tkBrW7
🗣NO‼️ You don’t need to reapply physical sunscreen every two hours, that’s over kill, unless you you’re working outside or playing sport. IF, you’re in and out doing ..... making pit stops and shopping, you CAN reapply 4 to 5 hours later. And WHO THE HELL, reapply every two hours while shopping or at work...... ❓🤔 You‼️
Wow! I'm still "absorbing" the sunscreen lesson. Lots to understand.. One thing is for sure, I/we couldn;t have done any of this with you: telling, showing, reminding, and teaching us! Love ya, Dr. Dray AKA Dr. Sunscreen!
Help! I just applied 1 teaspoon of my Cerave AM, I've been using about 1/2 teaspoon, and I can hardly tolerate it. It's so much that I feel almost suffocating with that much. What do I do? Apply it in two steps? It's hot here and I'm sweating buckets!!! :(
I was wondering if you answer a question? I found a foundation with SPF 23 (titanium dioxide) and I was curious if this is a high enough SPF or if I should layer it with another SPF? Right now I am using the DRMTGLY tinted SPF 45. My instinct tells me that SPF 23 is too low, but I want sure. Thanks for any help!
Oh man! I thought I was doing so well with wearing Neutrogena ultra sheer spf 50 in combination with EltaMd tinted sunscreen. I am on Retin A as well. I really hope I haven't being doing any UVA damage :( :( Thanks so much for this information!!! Best RU-vidr around!
Well the elta md should cover you just fine for the uva component....the cautionary tale is with the mineral powders that don't evenly distribute sun protection
Dr. Dray, my eyes are super sensitive to sunscreen. Why product do you recommend for around my eyes that won't sting? I appreciate your help! I've invested so much in sunscreen over the years in trying to figure this one out.
Great Video! Your just Amazing! You are truly helping so many people with your knowledge. I think that is such a beautiful thing. Love and Light💖Carli Oh BTW: You have the best eyebrows!
I use physical sunscreen once in the morning before I head out to work. I stay in the office the entire 8hrs, so I don’t sweat. Do I need to reapply sunscreen before I leave work for home?
Your videos are very informative. Would you explain what SFP 30 means vs SPF 50? I googled and heard from other youtuber, claimed SPF 30 means 30 x10 = 300 minutes, how long it will protect you from the sun exposure before reapplying. Is this completely false? TIA :)
the 300minutes thing is wrong...30 means The SPF number tells you how long the sun’s UV radiation would take to redden your skin when using the product exactly as directed versus the amount of time without any sunscreen. So ideally, with SPF 30 it would take you 30 times longer to burn than if you weren’t wearing sunscreen. An SPF 30 allows about 3 percent of UVB rays to hit your skin. An SPF of 50 allows about 2 percent of those rays through. That may seem like a small difference until you realize that the SPF 30 is allowing 50 percent more UV radiation onto your skin.Under ideal conditions (like in a laboratory), a sunscreen with higher SPF protection and broad-spectrum coverage offers more protection against sunburn, UVA damage and DNA damage than comparable products with lower SPF values. But, real life is not like a lab. In real life, products with very high SPFs often create a false sense of security. People who use them tend to stay out in the sun much longer. They may skip reapplying. And they may think they don’t need to seek shade, wear a hat or cover up with clothing. They end up getting a lot more UV damage, which, of course, defeats the purpose.
With the recommendation of 1 tsp for face, neck, and head, is this a bald man applying it to his head, face, ears, back and front of the neck, and décolleté, or is this a woman who has a full head of hair applying it to face, back/front of neck, ears, and décolleté? I applied 1/2 a tsp for the second scenario and it felt like a TON of spf. Does this depend on the spf in particular, or just any spf you can possibly buy?
Question, after I apply my sunscreen and then make-up, how often do I have to reapply during the day, if I am a teacher? I am mostly indoors with about 30 for recess and then 15-20 minutes at the end of the day at dismissal. Then there the 1 hour drive to school in the morning and afternoon. TIA
Such an excellent series this has been! I wish everyone would watch this. There are many beauty RU-vidrs that rely on makeup as their sunscreen, use brush on powder sunscreen as their only sunscreen or apply such a small amount of sunscreen. Thanks Dr. Dray!
Dr.Dray, I recently heard someone referring to “blue light” and possible skin damage from computers. I’d like to see you discuss blue light if it is truly a concern. Thanks!
Really?! Where have I been. Just an example of why you probably need to repeat things over and over. Eventually I absorb all the information you discuss 🙃
Can we layer mineral and chemical sunscreens? Do we apply the mineral or the chemical first? Do we reapply both, one of them or it doesn't matter? Thanks
Thank you! I've learned so much from your videos. I picked up the Elta MD physical sunscreen that you use too, and am hopeful that it'll work out for me!
Thank you for your commitment to educating so many of us on skin care routines and products. Watching your videos the last several months, I've learned so much and my focus on sunscreen has improved significantly as a result. In rewatching the sunscreen videos, I have a question about layering. You mentioned avebenzone is degraded with titanium dioxide. I often vary applications between chemical and physical sunscreens during the day. If I use chemical in the morning and reapply with physical, wouldn't the physical sunscreen application still protect me against UVA regardless of how the titanium dioxide affects the avebenzone filter applied earlier in the day?? I'm sorry for being obtuse, but I didn't understand your point here. Thanks in advance for providing additional clarification when layering sunscreens throughout the day. (And...congrats on fast approaching the 100k subscriber mark!! Well Done!)
ti can, in theory, degrade the avobenzone faster...but in reality, it doesn't seem to make a difference as studies do show that the combination of mineral and chemical filters still lower amount of skin cancers and sun damage
Thank you for the informative videos:) I apply sunscreen every morning, then wait about 5 minutes and apply moisturizer and then some light makeup. Is this a good order of layering to avoid wiping the sunscreen off? Should I do anything different? I work in an office with many windows. Am I getting sun damage through the windows throughout the day? Thanks in advance!
SO GLAD I FOUND YOU :) You're amazing! Hope you see this. QUESTION1: Can you do a video on melanin? Reason why I've always been a sunscreen advocate myself is cuz I felt I've always "sunburned" and got dark easily. (Ironic, given my name, Melanie.) I'd love to hear your breakdown of different skin types and their solutions. Leading to my next question. QUESTION2: How do I reapply sunscreen on a daily basis if I am wearing a full face of make up?? (Yes, I am trying to wear less make up but I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place with wanting max SPF coverage and makeup to cover acne scars and active acne.. ) Regardless, I want to be protected EVERY DAY, but you mentioned powder sunscreen isn't really effective. :( For a second, I thought that was my solution. PLS HELP!
I’m so desperate for a matte finish sunscreen that I can wear under a tinted moisturizer with a physical SPF. CeraveAM is just too...wet. I picked up Neutrogena Clear Face, which has a more matte finish, but it BURNS like crazy, all over my face. Another one to just use somewhere else on my body, so not really a waste of money...but the search continues.
Sheesh...someone told me all I needed was spf 15 and anything higher was a waste. My issue is mostly the makeup factor though. I apply sunscreen in the morning under my makeup. I get a maximum of 45 minutes of direct sun exposure all day. I can’t imagine having to reapply it over my makeup every time I go outside...I’d be an absolute greaseball with goopy makeup by the time I made it home lol. My saving grace I guess is that I hardly ever sweat at all. My forehead might get a little shiny by the end of the day but that’s about it :)
Good Morning Dr. Dray. Thank you for sharing all this information. I have never really worried about protecting my skin but a skin cancer diagnoses in my immediate family has made me take notice. I have learned so much from your vidoes on sunscreen but I do still have a couple of questions. I use the Cerave line of products for cleansing, moisturizing and sun proctection. I find my skin tolerates them well so I am not going to mess with a good thing, I was wondering how close I should get the moisturizer and SP to my eyes. I know my under eye area needs to be protected but getting to close produces watery eyes for hours. Every product I've used seems to produce the same results. My other question is about dark spots and a Dr's appointment. I want to treat my dark spots for future cancer prevention and am not sure what to ask about. I will have to pay out of pocket for what use so I don't want to waste my money trying to find the right treatment. I am not sure I will actually go to a dermatologist (depends on my family practice recommendation at a military facility with limited resources so it may not happen) I want to go armed with good info so I can have a intelligent conversation about my needs. Thanks so much for all you put out there and have a wonderful day!!!
Thanks for sharing!! If the dark spots under the eyes are cosmetic, then the provider can reassure you that they are not of concern. However, cosmetic skin concerns are not covered by insurance. I tolerate both cerave sunscreens (combination one as well as zinc only one) on my eyes.
Hi! Thanks for all your info. Great to have a dermatologist's perspective and one who you can confirm facts from the Internet with! I've read differing info on nano zinc oxide sunscreens -are they harmful or not if using on full body? Even if it's not right away, but how about over time? Thanks
I have a question: if I apply a chemical sunscreen over make-up (for example a primer or a foundation), will it affect its efficacy? Would this be different with physical sunscreens?
I have to watch this vid again today to make sure of what I have learned about sunscreen from you so far. The reason is I came across this vid of 2 beauty bloggers (my favorite ones) who still claim SPF indicates the time our skin is protected from UVB using sunscreen. All the things they say are reasonable enough (types, ingredients and reviews) except the one thing above. I was a bit disappointed cause they know all that but then give the wrong info of a basic term. Information sources are important and I trust you Dr Dray.
Love your videos. There are a few sunscreens I'd like to get your feedback on as time / resources permit: MAKE P:REM Capsule Sun Gel, AmorePacific Resort Collection Sun Protection Mist, and Charmzone Albatross Powder Sun. Also, what are your thoughts on the sunscreen facial powders? Thanks in advance.
Which physical sunscreens are beneficial in skin of colour and in which products can they be found, Dr Dray? Caucasian skin is different to skin of colour. Please advise and make videos for us too 🙏
In other words I will buy kids sunscreen because it seems to have more titanium dioxide, but how can i combat overcast if it is noticeable? I will be buying cheap since it shouldnt last that long!
What do u recommend for people who wear makeup all day and who work in an office most of the day and are only outside when driving/ walking into buildings or to the car ? What do you think about using spray on sunscreens for reapplying over makeup? Because you can't put a lotion sunscreen over foundation. How often do you need to reapply if you are not outside ??
Question: With the information that titanium dioxide accelerated the degradation of avobenzone, why did you use chemical sunscreen ( with avobenzone) with physical sunscreen that has titanium dioxide in it?
I was recently diagnosed with lupus and this is my first summer since being diagnosed. I wear sunscreen but was wondering if I'm ok to be outdoors (backyard) in the shade without it. I'm currently on Prednisone for the inflammation and tetrinoin cream for the acne that I got as a side effect of prednisone.
Hello Dr Dray. This is the most in-depth series a medical person has ever done on RU-vid for sunscreens! You got me converted to physical sunscreens. However there was an article that I came across that when you nanosize zinc oxide it loses its potential to protect against UVA while retaining its UVB protection while micro sizing does not do that. Is there any truth in that. And would also like your thoughts on layering chemical sunscreens on physical ones and vice versa. Regards from India.
There are so many RU-vidrs who will say that because they live in an area that has mostly cloudy weather they dont need sunscreen! This makes me cringe because there are viewers who will follow this "advice". Also, I always wonder how sunscreens can be labeled as SPF 100. It would be great if the recommendations you mentioned became a requirement. Cheers!
I just found your channel and I am loving your videos! I have only watched like 5 so far but I intend on watching them all! I love learning about skincare! I know you do Q&As so I have a question, not sure if you have mentioned this in another video but do you have any recommendations on ingredients to look for for red skin on your face? not like rashy or bumpy redness, more of like a flushed look or turns red to the touch. I was recommended a product that is quite expensive that doesn't seem to be working so I'm hoping to try something else.
Hi Dr. Dray Your videos are very informative. Thankyou for all the knowledge you are sharing with us. I have a few questions and I haven't found answers to them anywhere. I am having very high hopes here that you'll reply and help me. I am a stay at home parent and mostly stat indoors. I use actives am and pm. I use Biore Aqua sunscreen. I have huge windows in each and every room of my house. I live in Denmark. I apply sunscreen religiously every 2 hours. My question is do I need to reapply a very high spf suncreen every 2 hours even when I am indoor ? Or I need to apply ever 3,4 hours when I am indoor? Should I apply sunscreen as soon as sun rises or whenever I wake up? Also we have long long summer days here un Denmark like sunrises around 5 am and we have daylight until 9pm as well . How mant times should I apply sunscreen in that case? Please please do reply. I would be very grateful to you. TIA . ❤❤ .
Thank you for breaking down the proper use of sunscreens. I watch your videos everyday while I eat my beakfast and really enjoy all of the tips for effective skin care.
the part with avobenzone, and titanium dioxide accelerating its rate of degradation, as well as the discussion around the insufficiency of titanium dioxide in mineral makeup (powder forms) to protect the skin is highly appreciated. thank you so much Dr. Dray!
If in a chemical sunscreen Avonenzone is stabilised by Timosorb, Mexoryl or other photostabilisers, is it okay to later a physical sunscreen over the top. Will the Titanium dioxide still degrade the Avobenzone? x
