Waterrock Knob is one of the best stops on all of the Blue Ridge Parkway especially when traveling in from Asheville or Waynesville, or coming in from the southern entrance of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Waterrock Knob is the best place to see the sunset from the Blue Ridge Parkway in this area of the Blue Ridge parkway!

Ah, time marches on. We were there, girlfriend, then wife. Water Rock Knob was not paved, no rest area, no ranger station. There was a meadow off to the left and behind the peak. There was also a ledge to the right of the ridge, which my girl wanted to try, but I told her that the ledge was too narrow, and I could not defend her from a bear or cat. Things were seriously different in the middle of the last century. Good grief, I miss her. What a world that was. Truly wild and free. We were courting one night up high, looking at millions of stars. There was only one other car, a ranger. He blinked his lights at us and moved on. The night went back to pure dark. We loved our courting time.

We did a sunset hike at Cape Henolpen, Del SP out on the great dunes, walking distance from the camp ground. It was cool.

For a large, gorgeous view of the mountains and sunset go to the top of Roan Mountain, short hike from Rhododendrons to the overlook.

.5 flat miles in the FL does not equal .5 miles in the Smokies 🥵

That 20% incline made this a lot tougher than people think!! :)

I’m curious how difficult the walk down was on this trail in the dark?

Great question, and funny enough, plenty of people were hiking up after the sun had gone down because its a popular spot for star gazing! It gets really dark, so without a headlamp I wouldn't do it, but the views up there are unreal!! Thanks for the great question!!
