Today I'm going to show you how to paint a sunset, landscape in watercolor.
I am painting on Saunders Waterford Cold Press 140lb paper. I have my surface tilted to 35 degrees. I use a variety of brands of brushes. I mainly stick to a large mop, medium round and smaller synthetic brush with a point.
Here are the list of pigments on my palette:
Burnt Sienna
Cadmium Red
Cadmium Yellow Medium
Cerulean Blue
Cobalt Blue
Cobalt Teal Blue
Cobalt Turquoise
Lavender
Neutral Tint
Payne's Gray
Quinacridone Gold
Raw Sienna
Raw Sienna Light
Raw Umber
Rose Madder Permanent
Ultramarine Blue

The hardest part of a sunset for me is getting my color strong enough without making it look like a circus. It's frustrating to say the least. Skies are my nemesis.

You’ve achieved a realistic painting, despite not fiddling with every detail. I work with Saunders blocks, so wetting each side isn’t something I’d be comfortable with. What alternatives do you suggest for Cobalt Turquoise in the green mix? Thanks again.

Love your work, I am learning a lot! What kind of paper do you use that you don’t need to actually immerse it in water and let it dry. Seems to work with wetting back and front so I’d like to try that!

What type of board do you use for your paintings. I have one of those glass mats on my desk and I couldn’t seem to get my paper to stay flat when putting water on both sides and wondered if I needed more of a sealed wood surface or if my gator board would work

I have a question regarding periodical publications on watercolor. Someone told me today there are publications out there on watercolor but they could not recall the publication name. Do you know of any watercolor publications that you feel are worth the read? I am new to watercolor and want to immerse myself in it as much as possible. Digital materials don’t work as well for me when I work remotely so paper publications are the best for me personally. Thank you
