Stars: Sally Rand, Esther Muir and Vince Barnett Director: Louis J. Gasnier Small-time showgirl, loved by two decent men, poses as a stripper to infiltrate a nightclub whose owner is believed responsible for her father's murder.
The thing I like about these movies is how elegantly dressed the ladies were and I he nice hair styles they had ! The men wore suits and hats real sharp ! 😊😊😊
Bet they never imagined that after 80 years, people would still be watching and enjoying this film. I still appreciate and hours' viewing and find it a most pleasing way to pass an hour. No swearing, gratuitous violence. Just well dressed, elegant actors doing their best. Thank you for this.
The society 80 yrs ago and how great it was.wish that were true. the us wasa violent the day the so called mayflower hit the shore quite apart from the 1890s when workers were beate to death for complaing to the rich bosses about starvation wages. we refer of course to Ford. The Railways etc. We dont need to mention Pinkertons do we. ask about them in uk and the threats we get from the US Embassy You need to stop living in the make believe world of acting.
Another great one! Those were the days not a lot of money was spent on movie making yet they were great stories and characters!! Thank you, dear Pizza!!
Great film and the unique dance with a balloon - so far haven't come across any one else who could do it. Wish there were films made like this today - a mixture of dance and mystery.
Originally released in November 1938. Less than two years later, Grand National Pictures declared bankruptcy, and went out of buisness. George Hirliman and Louis Gasnier were previously responsible for the classic explotation film "Reefer Madness" (1936).
These old movies I always get interested in how long the actors lived to. The women lived to a good age but the men were gone quite early...possibly due to the smokes or drinks or both.
I only watch old black and white movies. They’re so much better than the trash that’s offered today. I watched a great thriller 1955 Night At Lark Cottage. Only 25 minutes long but very entertaining. Also All My Sons with Edward G Robinson and Burt Lancaster… excellent movie.
This one was pretty good! Love where the dance sequence seemingly comes out of nowhere. Whoever edited needs to claim a little "whoops" there. Thanks for sharing!
Yes there were a few places... Like just before that scene a wipe from two guys at a table to... two guys at a table. They would have done better with a clock wipe or pan to an actual clock with hands moving quickly instead.
Note that the dance sequence begins at 20:39, with a parade of tableaux vivant damselles. Sally, screened by her feathers and ferns, enters at 22.31. Sally was famous for the remark: "I haven't been out of work since I took off my pants..."
I was here on youtube & watched a cartoon called "Hollywood Steps Out" to see all the "Old Hollywood" movie stars animated. Included was Sally Rand doing her Bubble Dance. So I pull up a video film clip of her doing her the act . It was really entertaining. Then I found video of her appearances on "I've Got A Secret" & "To Tell the Truth". I enjoyed both episodes with her. Funny thing no one on "To Tell the Truth" recognized her then Robert Q Lewis was able to figure it out by her being on Broadway currently. The 2 other women couldn't fake their answers good enough to make the panelist believe they were her. Those shows are so much fun vs the crap game shows on now. I read she was in this film but I didn't know she was the star of it!
I remember that cartoon! 😄 I like when Frank Sinatra is singing, the females all swooning, "Oh Frankieee!" 😍 and then he steps behind the microphone 🎤 stand and disappears, all you see is his ears sticking out 😆😂🤣
vaudeville or burlesque was still hanging on, gloriously. 7:40 Sally Rand's infamous Bubble Dance. 17:00 montage of vintage Sunset Strip clubs. archival!!! 20:25 Michio Ito ballet, late Deco pre-war extravaganza. 22:25 the dance of the White Peacock, again High Deco. this is a crzy combo of high Hollywood art and low gangsters. 29:55 Penny Nichols, "I'd Rather Look At You."
in 1938 the studios were being extorted by the many studio labor unions that were a front for the chicago mob run by al capone...his man in hollywood was johnny roselli , known as handsome johnny . The mayor and majority of the police ...La cops as well as the county sherriff were all on the take . not to mention judges as well.....the studio that made this film was soon to go bankrupt . This is about the time that a reform movement was about to take place in the local politics , not to mention WW2 was on the horizon which would shake up the whole under world . LA and Chicago were two of the most corrupt cities the world had ever seen during that period . If not for the Zealots that managed to ban the sale of alcohol , mafia....the underworld could have never ever gained such a foothold on our economy , that strangle continues to this very day .
At 39:00 to 39:30 check that sculpted hair on the man and again, the front door that opens outward. Lost the crime story in the music, so I fast-forwarded and found an alright plot there. Thanks!
If she'd had a dime's worth of sense, Penny Nichols (27:00) would have allowed that JOIKY GIGOLO no quahtah. I recognized that cheap setup from 40 paces and 80 years. You just know she's gonna get got by some guy who'll pay her little interest. Dreadful puns litter Miss Penny's hokey hotel-orchestra tune "I'd Much Rather Look At You" (30:00). The kicker is DARING: "If they moved China's Wall to DAM Niagara Falls..." was calculated to make avoirdupoisy frumps START to rise (with effort), start to splutter "Well! I never!"---i like spluttering (and splutterers), and i LOVE 1.5-entendres!! Damn, wish i'd written that lame, lame tune!!
I've noticed lots of names that Hollywood uses over & over again. Fictional character names taken from actor's real names or vice versa. Ron Glass . John Ritter. I love it when I find "crossover" names
Not a great B flick by any means, but at least we got to see Rand's two famous dances (which caused the picture to be held up by the censors for two years). Vince Barnett, the short henchman, was a great comic character actor whose career started with ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT (1930) and ended with the Cloris Leachman film CRAZY MAMA (1975). Kathryn Kane, sometimes billed as Candy Kane, also had a long career, including film, theatre, and work with big bands (notably Benny Goodman).
Of course, they had to shield Middle America's delicate puritanical sensibilities from anything even remotely sexy. It's hilarious how incredibly prudish the country was back then.
I'll never forget watching these old movies and realizing that men will kill pretty women and that pretty women don't necessarily get better treatment. I can't believe so many pretty ladies get mixed up with dangerous men for a better lifestyle. Perhaps that was one of the lessons of these films. Glamour can go hand in hand with danger.
And then there are women who kill men. Of course, that's all the fault of men, isn't it? Women are not noted for a willingness to assume responsibility for their own actions. A sign of immaturity, and today it's acceptable behavior for 'feminists'.
my point is this , we must be very careful of our changes that we make with our constitution , change for one specific well intentioned reason , such the prohibition of alcohol , can and most likely will present a set of tremendous problems , such as the out of control of organized crime in this country....not to mention the political and law enforcement corruption that we see every day . I guess it boils down to this Be Careful of what you wish for !!!
Exactly Ronald Strange I completely agree with you. You can enjoy the picture without having to see nudity, open sex, obscenities, swearing, insults, etc., etc. For example: the movie "GOOD FELLAS" did you know that Joe Pesci said the "F"word?? Like a hundred times, disgraceful!!!! And Robert Deniro is not far from that. This are good, elegantly dressed men and women with good manners. Tks again you made me wanting to see movies again
"Goodfellas" was directed by Martin Scorsese, who came out of the "New Hollywood" movement of the late 1960s, when the demise of the Hayes Production Code gave movie makers more freedom. "New Hollywood" emphasized realism. Dialogue was supposed to sound like real people talking, and in real life, people swear. Sometimes, they swear a lot. Granted, it's easy to go overboard with this sort of thing. In Brian De Palma's 1983 remake of the 1932 gangster classic "Scarface," Al Pacino says the F-word over 200 times. It's meant to show that Tony Montana is an angry, uneducated, inarticulate man, but after a while, it does become a bit tiresome. Still, you have to take the bad with the good. I prefer to be treated like an adult rather than a child who needs to be shielded from anything dirty. And I prefer the realism of "New Hollywood" to the sanitized, restrictive, puritanical fantasy world of the Hayes Code, which robbed movies of all social relevance. Your mileage may vary.
Larry E She did both. She did the fan dance at the 1933 Chicago World's Fair and was repeatedly arrested, which made for publicity. Look her up on Wiki. My father used to talk about her. She seemed to be everywhere for awhile.
So, what was the point of Kathy getting Laura and the henchman drunk? It didn't lead anywhere. I thought she was going to take advantage of it to escape, but she doesn't. Oh right, this is 1938. Women can't do anything useful and always have to be rescued by men. For that matter, why were the cops not going after Stefani for murdering Nita and Kathy's dad? Ah, because then we'd have no movie.
Regular TV has been taken over by reality tv shows. Writing a good TV show is a dying art. It seems a third of the programing is reality tv and another third are old shows or news. Even the channels that have movies show the same movie several times a month.
Paul Sutton, who appeared as "Bapti", later moved to Detroit, and appeared as "Sergeant Preston" on radio's "CHALLENGE OF THE YUKON" ("SERGEANT PRESTON OF THE YUKON", after 1951) from 1945 through 1954. He settled in Michigan, and died in 1970.
Thanks for uploading this, movie. I did enjoy it, but could you, ( But. In. The Future ) Could You Please Raise The Volume of certain movies that are to low, to hear. Now I know when this, movie was made it was in, (. MONO. NOT. STEREO. ) which makes it much more harder to hear so if you can do it in the future that would be great thanks again
Today movies are nothing but the volgar word (four letter word and the call this garbage today acting)! this a beautiful movie no four-letter words except maybe the word love!

A vintage movie and it’s still good ! Nearly an 85 year old movie still enjoyable ! Can you imagine all these people in this movie are long dead due to time passed as well as due to smoking like chimneys active smoking and passive smoking.
They overextended themselves- particularly the two films Jimmy Cagney made for them {"Great Guy", "Something To Sing About"}; they had higher budgets than the studio usually spent, and *both* failed to make a profit for the studio- and there was talk of merging the company with Educational Pictures in 1938, which collapsed.......and eventually, so did Grand National.
The film was mislabeled on imdb webpage as a mystery film; it should have been listed as a crime/romance/music film. Also, the pretty and talented Lona Andre was very sadly underused in the film; here she played the mafia's girlfriend who was killed off along with the heroine's father at the beginning of the film. She should have been cast in a more substantial role instead.
You can't make a movie in days gone by. The films are too raunchy and violence. In fact the old movies have the music and feel like a old storytelling.
