The Sunshine Coast Trail is Canada’s longest hut-to-hut hiking trail, just 5 hours North of Vancouver, BC. It’s a unique and beautiful backcountry experience that stretches 180km from Sarah Point to Saltery Bay, along coastal shorelines, through old growth forests, and up to panoramic mountaintops.
Early June of 2019, my friend Adam and I planned on fastpacking a large portion of the trail, starting from Powell River and running 115 km back to Saltery Bay. Our primary goal was to train and test out our ultralight gear for our upcoming 5-day fastpacking adventure on the Tahoe Rim Trail a few weeks later.

@JeffPelletier
@JeffPelletier 3 года назад
Thank you! No, I’ve never had runners knee, but I have had other overuse injuries. My understanding of runners knee though is that it’s more of a ‘too much too soon’ kind of injury that newer runner get. Over time, your body adapts to the mileage, provided you give it adequate time to do so.

Another great video Jeff! I live in Washington, I'm going to have to give this trail a try in the spring. Didn't even know you could do hut to hut in BC! Question: Do you use Google Earth studios to make your trail animations at the beginning? How do you get it to draw in like that with the elevation map? Been trying to figure out a simple way to make an animation like that for a while and it looks like you have it nailed! Thanks in advance.
@JeffPelletier
@JeffPelletier 3 года назад
It’s the only hut system of its kind that I know of, and the best part is that it’s still not very busy! I use Google Earth Studio for the maps, yep. But I do all of the other animation and routes in After Effects. There’s unfortunately no way to do anything other than static tracks in Google Earth Studio.

Hey Irina, I actually don’t remember - I think I only attempted to get cell service once or twice while at a high point and was able to, but I really doubt that there is cell throughout the trail. So be sure to download your maps to use with your phone’s GPS in airplane mode.

Looks like a nice fastpack. Are you using a 3rd party bottle with your Katadyn water filter? The 600ml soft flask doesn't fit my Salomon packs. Keen to hear what you use.
@JeffPelletier
@JeffPelletier 4 года назад
Exactly. I use a 500ml Hydroflask bottle that happens to have the same threading. Salomon has just released their own filter though which I believe uses the same threading as the Katadyn, but on a 500ml bottle.

Awesome video! Is there a reason you didn't aim to do the whole trail? Is the north end not as nice or something? Or time constraints perhaps?
@JeffPelletier
@JeffPelletier 2 года назад
Thanks! Just time constraints. It’s logistically a little more challenging to get to the North end, so we would have needed a full day for travel in addition to another day on the trail. This way, we were able to do half days of travel.

Hello. Awesome video. I had planned to run the west coast trail starting May 15 with a friend. That of course has been derailed by the plague. Is this trail public? @JeffPelletier 4 года назад
Thanks! Yea, that’s the beauty of this trail. No permits are needed and, at least in my experience, it doesn’t get very busy! The only hut I’ve seen others at the two times I’ve been there is Tin Hat Mtn. The trail system and huts are currently closed though due to COVID-19 and may be for some time. Once it reopens, it will likely be in need of some work. I’d follow the SCT Facebook page for updates.

I recognize the value of trekking poles for ascents, descents and water crossings, however, do they improve your speed. I believe that their weight creates an amount of fatigue as you lift them, energy loss. Please comment.
@JeffPelletier
@JeffPelletier 2 года назад
They don’t provide any speed increase, and in fact do tend to slow you down when running with them. This route had enough elevation gain that the benefit on the climb (especially with the heavy pack), outweighed the downside. But it’s something I always evaluate on a case by case basis.

@JeffPelletier
@JeffPelletier 3 года назад
You’re not wrong. I get asked this a lot, and there are two ways I look at it. First off, we do still take in the views every chance we get. But the reality is that many miles of trail are going to get repetitive after a while, and this one in particular has a fair amount that runs along gravel roads or through cut blocks. It’s nice to be able to get through those sections faster. The second thing is that we make up for it in quantity. Hiking a trail like this would take a week or more and so it may be a once a year thing for most people. We get to enjoy trails and distances like this on a weekly basis, sometimes returning to the same areas several times in a season. So while we might spend less time on a particular trail, we get to see and experience multitudes more than the average hiker.
