'Sunshine' Ligustrum in 2 Minutes💛🌿 - In this video I go over 'Sunshine' Ligustrum from the Southern Living Plant Collection. It is an amazingly striking gold foliage evergreen that is super versatile. It can be shaped into to different forms to be kept small or left to its own and create a screen. It is a low maintenance shrub that is disease and insect resistant.

I think a dwarf species of Sunshine would be great. It could make them pair better with baby gems.

Mine defoliated the whole bottom during the winter and did what I could to make it flush out this spring. Finally pulled the 3 of them. Did not plant too deep, adequate water. Been a gardener for 30 yrs, planting trees and shrubs, so I don't understand what went wrong. Western NC. zone 7.

I have found some at a nursery that were bright yellow but no brown leaves. Looked healthy to me. However, I've read that if this plant gets yellow that there might be root issues. Is this true? I really like the bright yellow but don't want any issues. Is yellow okay or should I stick to green?

at the nursery i was told that they get yellow with more sun exposure - they can tolerate shade, but will be more green then.

In my limited experience with this plant in zone 7b, it is not reliably evergreen. I would consider it tardily deciduous. And it takes several months to flush out (not weeks).

Jim, great video .very informative. I planted 5 - 10 gallon sunshine legustrums as feature shrubs on a large water feature 16 years ago. Last year, almost all lost leaves in winter for first time. Came back ok in early spring Then several began shedding again leaving large brown sections in otherwise bright yellow foliage. I see no visible evidence of insect or fungal infestation. Have experienced Both in Leyland cypress and Little giant arborvite. Do you have any suggestions that could explain mass leaf shedding in only parts of these shrubs? I have snipped off a few leafless branches and peeled back bark which is still green. Some of these shrubs have a height of 10ft And width about the same. All are getting about 5-8 hrs of direct sun. I am in central NC. Zone 7.

I am having problems with leaves turning brown. I trimmed off all the bad foliage and was shocked that only 18 hours later the healthy leaves started turning brown (from the end of the branch first). It seems you don't answer many questions about solving problems with the plants sold by this company. I would appreciate some guidance. Thank you!

Looks like your baby gem boxwood is doing great. I actually planted an row of them as a hedge that is back planted with bloomstruck Hydrangea. But my baby gem boxwood is suffering from what looks to be blight. They have been in the ground for about a year and are really well established but I keep getting large chucks of branches dying off and they hold on to the dead leaves. 😩 I live In savannah ga. How do you keep yours free from blight? We seem to have the same growing conditions.
@JimPutnam
@JimPutnam 5 лет назад
I see that occasionally on Boxwoods. I don't know if that is root damage on just an individual root or what that is. I would clean tools between cuts for sure though.
@alexpesina6773
@alexpesina6773 5 лет назад
HortTube with Jim Putnam okay. well at this point I will probably replace them with something similar that’s not a boxwood. They are a little to far gone in my opinion and will probably take years to become an even solid hedge again. What’s something that you can recommend me? Must be dwarf because it’s near the sidewalk.
@JimPutnam
@JimPutnam 5 лет назад
Since you possibly have some root rot issue, I would consider one of the dwarf abelia or dwarf Loropetalum I have covered. Raise anything you are planting there.

Hi, I have several southern living sunshine lugustrums most planted on a hill in our backyard. I planted several last spring (2020) and more this year (2021). I am in metro GA and we have been getting a lot of rain and experiencing some pretty cool evening this spring.
