Welcome to Sunshine Swim Center. This is an overview of one of our Goldfish level skills. Here at Sunshine, we believe in instructor education, water safety and creating a love for swimming in all of our classes.
Our Goldfish Level is a beginning level; for swimmers 3 years old and up with a ratio of 3 swimmers to one instructor.
Object Retrieval
Having your swimmers dive down to the bottom of the pool to retrieve an object and return back to the surface is a fun way to practice an important safety skill. This skill helps your swimmer be more comfortable underwater and teaches them how to get themselves back to the surface in case of an emergency.
Start by dropping a sinking pool toy or object to the bottom of the pool. Watch as our instructor’s have the swimmers dive down to retrieve the object by pointing their shoulders towards the bottom of the pool, lifting their legs up behind them and kicking. Once they grab ahold of the item, they are going to plant their feet down and push off the bottom of the pool and kick back to the surface. You can finish this skill by having the swimmer float on their back, or swim to the wall.
Safety Tip: When having your swimmer try this skill you may need to hold their hand as they dive down the first time if they are unable to reach it themselves. Some swimmers will have difficulty getting down to the bottom so you will need to help bring them down so they can then push off the bottom by themselves.
